What's the real story with Patty Smythe?

I had heard on a VH-1 Where are they now episode that Patty Smythe from Scandal was first choice and Sammy was second to replace DLR. I'm pretty sure VH-1 had some wrong information. What's the real story?

Ed was a big fan of Scandal, and he actually hit her up for the job at one time and she told him he was nuts, pretty sure Ed introduced her to her husband John Mcenroe, who is a big fan of Ed`s. If you can find her FIRST solo album on CD, I would pick it up, great from beginning to end.

It's true about getting Patty Smythe to join - Ed mentioned it in a 1986 issue of GW (the one with him holding the Ripley guitar on the front cover).

I started a thread here before the "hack" on Patty Smyth. Someone posted that Ed played on a tune with her. They said they had the copy of it somewhere. Can't remember who that was but i'd like to hear that.

I saw in an interview she did a few years ago where she said she jammed with the band and they offered her the job and she said, "no thanks". But I remember her at the end of the interview adding "sorry Sammy, I was the first choice".

SuckaInAThreePiece had a live copy of Ed jamming with Scandal, over at Guitars101...I'm sure if you PM'ed him, he'd be happy to help out, as he's a decent fellow and has helped me tremendously in the past.

'Tis true, also saw this interview re: Patty Smythe in the collector's issue of Guitar Legends with EVH. Not sure what the music would've sounded like but having a female fronting VH???? Not that there's anything wrong with that...........but it would sure be a kick in the pants to find out VH was looking for (and found) a female lead singer after their first few albums. What's that about???? Sure glad that didn't happen because I think any of the older stuff would quite sound the same. IMO anyways.....

Ed is friends with Patty and her husband John McEnroe. When Dave left Ed half-seriously/half jokingly offered her the gig. Ed did not discuss this with management or even Al & Mikey so who knows what would have happened had she been interested. Anyway, she said no (she didn't think a female voice fit with VH) so there was no real audition or anything.

Ed appeared live with her band Scandal in 1984 at a LA club The Roxy and played on 2 of Scandal's songs "Maybe We Went Too Far" and "River Deep Mountain High" These are floating around on MP3s. I'm sure there is someone who can post it or PM it.

    It's true!

It's true, Ed did offer the gig after DLR left!!!! I saw her in an interview on VH-1, and she mentioned that! She did say, "Sorry Sammy, I was first choice." No offense, but thank GOD that the Red Rocker got the gig!!!!!!!! I think Eddie was drunk when he offered the gig to her, not to mentioned confused when DLR split!
I remember in an EVH interview on TV, Eddie said he, and the rest of the band, was devastated when DLR left, and why? They were at the TOP!!! But then, Eddie said, when he met Sammy, he was writing amazing lyrics & melodies left and right!!! Eddie said he was blown away at the sense of Sammy's gifted musicianship from all directions: singing, lyrical and melodic songwriting, and guitar playing! Also, that Sammy is open to all kinds of sounds and music. Eddie said he is lucky of having a gifted and open musician like Sammy!
