    Hide and Seek Finds Fans
Hide and Seek was in plain sight as the new number one movie.
    Source: E!Online

Fox's R-rated suspense thriller, starring Robert De Niro as a widowed dad and Dakota Fanning as his creepy kid who appears to develop bad seed tendencies after they move to a secluded home in the woods, scared up an estimated $22 million over a weekend more notable for the box-office gains made by the movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar--Million Dollar Baby, Sideways, The Aviator, Finding Neverland and Ray.

Buzz and biz for the films competing for the most prestigious show-biz honor completely buried the weekend's other new horror story, Alone in the Dark. The R-rated Lions Gate release is based on the hit videogame and stars Tara Reid as an anthropologist (it's fiction, folks) helping paranormal investigator Christian Slater track alien monsters. Slammed by critics as a complete stinker, it was also shunned by audiences and didn't even crack the top 10, earning just $2.5 million at 2,124 sites. Its per-screen average was just $1,177, compared to the top-ranked $7,321 average at 3,005 locations for Hide and Seek, which also received poor reviews but probably benefited from thriller fans need for a regular fix and the presence of De Niro, who also stars in the current megahit comedy Meet The Fockers.

In the wake of last Tuesday's Oscar nominations, the top contenders expanded their reach and made a bigger play for box-office spoils.

Million Dollar Baby, Clint Eastwood's emotional boxing drama, finally moved into wide release in its seventh week, taking over 2,010 sites--1,863 more than last weekend. It gained 616 percent to earn $11.8 million from a $5,883 per-screen average. That punched the PG-13 Warners release all the way up from 12th to third place, behind last week's top movie, Ice Cube's road trip comedy Are We There Yet?, which only fell off a slim 8 percent sliver, taking in $17 million, from a $6,273 average at 2,710 sites.

Million Dollar Baby (which this Saturday won Eastwood the coveted Directors Guild of America Award, considered a strong harbinger for the Best Director Oscar) racked up seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Acting kudos for Eastwood and Hilary Swank, and Best Supporting Actor for Morgan Freeman.

The Aviator, the PG-13 Miramax release that is considered the other hot favorite for Best Picture and has a leading 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Director for Martin Scorsese, also soared in its seventh week of release. Adding 242 sites to play at 2,503 sites the biopic, starring Best Actor nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as the obsessed tycoon Howard Hughes and Best Supporting Actress wannabe Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn, moved up to sixth from eighth place, gaining 55 percent and earning $7.5 million from a $3,000 per-screen average.

Sideways, another Best Picture nominee, which has five nominations in all, was close behind with $6.3 million in seventh place. The R-rated Fox Searchlight wine-country comedy opened in just four sites back in October and has gradually moved wider as it has picked up numerous critical awards and excellent word of mouth. Now uncorked in 1,694 sites, compared to 998 last weekend, it registered a gain of 122 percent and a $3,734 per-site average.

While the other two Best Oscar nominees didn't penetrate the top 10 list, they also registered gains.

Finding Neverland, which has seven nominations, flew into 1,258 sites after 12 weeks of limited release and gained 121 percent. Miramax PG-rated tale of Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie, which earned acting nods for star Johnny Depp, but no directing acknowledgment for Marc Forster, took in $2.7 million from a $2,152 per-screen average.

The Ray Charles biopic Ray, which has six nominations, including Taylor Hackford as Best Director and Jamie Foxx as Best Actor, is in its 14th week of release and will be out soon on video. Still, the PG-13 Universal movie took in $559,000 at just 527 sites--more than double last week's exposure--for a $1,061 per-screen average and a gain of 103 percent.

Hotel Rwanda, which secured a Best Actor nomination for Don Cheadle and Best Supporting Actress nomination for Sophie Okonedo registered a 36 percent gain as the PG-13 MGM/UA Rwanda massacre drama expanded from 98 sites to 417 in its sixth week, earning $1.8 million from a $4,317 per-screen average.

Overall, the top 12 films earned $103.5 million, according to preliminary figures Sunday, up 25 percent from last weekend and 41 percent over this time last year, which was the Super Bowl weekend, a notoriously low-profit time for movies.

Here's a rundown of the top-grossing films based on studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations; final figures will be released Monday:

    1. Hide and Seek, $22 million
    2. Are We There Yet?, $17 million
    3. Million Dollar Baby, $11.8 million
    4. Coach Carter, $8 million
    5. Meet The Fockers, $7.6 million
    6. The Aviator, $7.5 million
    7. Sideways, $6.3 million
    8. In Good Company, $6.2 million
    9. Racing Stripes, $6 million
    10. Assault on Precinct 13, $4.2 million

    X-Men 3 in June, Spider-Man 3 in April?
    Source: Moviehole

    There's movement on a couple of super-sequels.

First, Alan Cumming told Coming Soon that he'll be back for "X-Men 3", and that he's expecting to be on-set in June.

"I signed for two films, so I'm going to. The last I heard is that we're starting on the 20th of June, but they don't have a script or a director yet so that may be pushed a little bit. But they have to release it in May of 2006 for some reason so it's gonna be shot in the summer," Cumming said.

"And it's one of these things, I kind of just want to know I'm going to do it cause it affects your whole life. You can do other things cause you know that it's a large amount of time; I'm going to a show on Broadway which I moved to January of next year just to make sure I finished X-Men…Every film you do you have to tell them just in case they're going to get it together really fast. You're under some options; it's quite weird."

Meantime, a scooper for Superhero Hype got word from J.K Simmons (Jonah Jameson in "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2") that "Spider-Man 3" starts shooting in three months. The release date is May 4, 2007.

    Bond Casting Announcement Soon?
Oft-rumored contender to be named 007?
    Source: IGNFF

January 28, 2005 - MI6 reports that Clive Owen, recently nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for Closer, may be poised to be named the next 007. The site says an official announcement on Bond 21 could be made as early as mid-February.

"If Owen is cast as the next James Bond 007, it is expected he will sign a three picture deal with Eon Productions, with filming of Bond 21 to possibly begin in January 2006," claims MI6.

The site adds that, upon his being nominated for an Oscar, London bookies slashed the odds of Owen being named the next Bond down to 4-1.

Owen, a long rumored Bond candidate, recently won a Golden Globe for Closer and played the title role in this past summer's King Arthur.

If Owen is cast as Bond then he'd be reunited with Martin Campbell who directed him in the flop Beyond Borders.

    SpongeBob's not gay, creator says
Stephen Hillenburg scoffs at the controversy surrounding the cartoon character, who he says is asexual.
    Source: EntertainmentWeekly

SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg insists that, despite a current controversy, hand-holding pals SpongeBob and Patrick are not frontmen for the gay agenda, or any other agenda besides wacky entertainment. ''It doesn't have anything to do with what we're trying to do,'' said Hillenburg, talking to Reuters from Singapore, where The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie premieres this weekend. Of his popular Nickelodeon cartoon characters, he said, ''We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We're just trying to be funny, and this has got nothing to do with the show.''

At issue is a music video featuring SpongeBob and many other popular cartoon characters that's designed to promote tolerance to schoolchildren, who'll get the opportunity to see the clip when the We Are Family Foundation sends it to 61,000 U.S. schools in March. Though there's no mention of sexual orientation in the video or the accompanying teaching materials, the We Are Family website includes sexual identity on a list of characteristics that should not be subject to prejudice. ''Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity' within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary but it crosses a moral line,'' warned Focus on the Family chief James Dobson.

Hillenburg said he doesn't understand the fuss, telling Reuters there are ''more important issues to worry about.'' He observed that SpongeBob and Patrick are only the latest pair of children's entertainment characters who've sparked gay rumors. ''Just think of Laurel and Hardy,'' he said, ''or Ernie and Bert.'' Wait a minute, Mr. Hillenburg, do you mean to say that Ernie and Bert really aren't gay?

I finally bought Seasons 3-5 to complete my set and I was hoping Season 6 was coming around sooner! One problem about this upcoming one: The "Who Shot Mr. Burns" episode was the season finale and part II won't be available until they release Season 7!

Terror Train Remake in the Works
    Source: ComingSoon!

In conjunction with Maverick Films and Integrated Films and Management, Emmett/Furla Films, a wholly owned subsidiary of Family Room Entertainment Corporation, has announced that they are in final negotiations to acquire the rights to remake the 1980 horror classic, Terror Train. The original picture, which was directed by Roger Spottiswoode and starred Jamie Lee Curtis, follows a group of college coeds being terrorized by a masked killer during a New Year's Masquerade on a chartered train.

Emmett/Furla and Integrated recently partnered to set up a remake of the horror classic The Amityville Horror with NuImage and Dimension Films.

Co-chairs of Family Room Entertainment Randall Emmett and George Furla stated: "We are very excited to be re-teaming with Steve (Whitney) and Andy (Trapani) on another horror remake. We are also thrilled to be working with Maverick Films, who bring an extraordinary depth of creative resources."

"Suspense on a train is a classic formula that's been relatively unexplored in recent years," said Andy Trapani and Steve Whitney of Integrated Films and Management.

Mark Morgan of Maverick Films stated: "Maverick has been looking for the right picture to collaborate with EFF and Integrated for some time. We are excited to start with 'Terror Train' and believe this to be the first of many to come."

The producers are currently out to writers on the Pic, which is being fast-tracked.

Not to sound like a stuck-up asshole but I fucking called this one!! Clive Owen will be a great Bond!

Damn, I'm on a roll!! First Bale as Batman and now Owen as Bond! In need my own Hollywood insider column...

Ocean's Twelve Arrives on DVD April 12
    Source: ComingSoon!

On April 12, the whole gang is back in the Warner Home Video DVD release of Ocean's Twelve, which has grossed over $294 million worldwide. The action-adventure, from director Steven Soderbergh, stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle, and Bernie Mac.

Ocean's Twelve will be available on DVD at sell-through pricing $27.95 SRP in widescreen DVD format. The VHS will be priced for rental.

Danny Ocean and pals return in a sequel to the cool caper that saw them pull off a $160 million heist. But $160 million doesn't go as far as it used to. Not with everyone spending like sailors on leave. Not with a mysterious someone stalking Danny and crew. It's time to pull off another stunner of a plan--or plans.
