Marshall JCM800 effects loop cuts the balls off my amp!

    i need help.
i recently had a nice tune-up done to my JCM 800 Marshall 50-watt head. The amp is in excellent condition and sounds fantastic.

the one huge complaint i've always had, however, is that when i run my rack through the effects loop, the "balls" of the amp get cut off. it loses a lot of gain and tone.

i installed a VOX effects loop buffer in my rack but all that thing does is make incredible amounts of noise. i mean INCREDIBLE.

any of you out there in a similar situation?

also, is it at all possible to get a nice clean tone out of the clean channel on a marshall? after all these years it's still a pipe dream to me.

thanks in advance to any responses!

You can get a clean tone with the right speakers, the right guitar, and the right power amp tubes. Simple right?
Whether it'll be a nice clean tone is hard to say. All marshalls sound different from one another too so one might sound great clean while another sounds better overdriven.

When you say tune up I assume you mean a bias. There's nothing else in a head that needs tuning up.

Marshalls usually have no problems with the loops, and are very freindly to all kinds of effects as a rule. Are your rack effects parameters set up properly for the right amount of in and output signal?
How does it sound when you run just a short cable through the effects loop?
Just a 6" cable for effects. Plug it into effect send and return.
Is there any noise or loss/gain in volume?
Don't worry, it won't hurt the amp. You're just manually bridging the preamp to the output stage. You might notice a small rise in volume but there shouldn't be anything else.

Try maybe just running an EQ pedal in the effects loop, and set the level adjust on the pedal higher to compensate for the level loss.

Is the loop's level set really low?
