Default Wal-Mart now recognizing same-sex partners

Change in one policy at nation’s largest employer expands to include workers’ same-sex partners
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The nation’s largest employer is expanding the definition of ‘‘immediate family’’ in its ethics policy to include an employee’s same-sex partner.
The Wal-Mart Stores Inc. policy change — disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday — accounts for the laws in some states that recognize domestic partnerships and civil unions, officials said.
Company spokesman Gus Whitcomb on Thursday declined to say if the change would affect employee benefits, or whether it meant Wal-Mart was taking a position on the issue of same-sex marriage or civil unions.
A national lobbying group for gay and lesbian issues, nevertheless, praised the move.
‘‘We are encouraged by this sign showing America’s heartland employer understands same-sex couples share the responsibilities that come with being a family,’’ Daryl Herrschaft, deputy director of Human Rights Campaign’s WorkNet program, said in a statement.
The revisions deal with sections of the company’s ethics code that bar employees from using confidential information to benefit themselves or immediate family members, and from approaching Wal-Mart’s suppliers about jobs for immediate family members, the company said.
‘‘We updated our statement of ethics,’’ Whitcomb said. ‘‘That brings us into compliance with state laws in terms of how they look at individuals with regard to policies’’ where a worker’s immediate family would be a factor, he said.
For instance, in Massachusetts, where same-sex marriage is legal, Wal-Mart would expect its workers in that state to abide by the company’s ethics policy as it pertains to families, Whitcomb said.
Wal-Mart, based in Bentonville, is the world’s largest retailer.

Good for Wal-Mart. Maybe others will follow. It's nice to see our humanity hasn't totaly disappeared.

I am now boycotting Walmart. I refuse to spend any money there anymore. I tolerate homosexuality, but I will not celebrate it. I am homo-averse and Walmart just lost a customer, and as many others as I can convince not to shop there.

I think Wal-Mart will be better off not having you as a customer.

Amazing how both of you just both had the same response, one by PM (and how you aren't both on at the same time). I had a feeling it was you squalin, stirrin up all this after all. BradS is not your only alter-ego. Why not just come out of the closet now instead of cross-dressing?

Yeah, that's it. I don't agree with you, so I am someone else. Nice logic.

Wall Mart has long been known for slave-labor wages, mandatory overtime without just accounting, and associating itself with cheap, underpriced goods made in 3rd world countries by children paid something on the scale of 8 cents an hour, and a bag of rice. As Wall Mart shoppers, we are funding slave labor, populating trailer parks, and ripping off the American dream by providing just-above-poverty wages while the share holders sit back phat and happy not realizing the legacy of their business tactics.

Walmart is what it is because Americans value saving a couple of bucks over not saving a couple of bucks. I'm quite comfortable to see someone overseas making what is a good wage for them so that I can have my goods and services a bit cheaper. It's nothing more than the reality of free trade.

Sure, until those greenbacks come home, its cool. I was in an industry that was completely gutted from Chinese giveaways, and lots of people lost their jobs after GATT. Just remember that everything you pick up that is not made here is not subject to workers comp insurance for their workers, minimum wage standards or any of the benefits of that same product made in the USA. But, hey, if it saves 99 cents, who cares who's kids get chained to floors in factories, lose limbs in dangerous machinery, or work 15 hour days for a buck and a half. Outta sight, outta mind!
