    Default Mitch Malloy

I e-mailed this cat about the van halen stuff and told him i'm sorry it didnt happen. He was very down to earth and sent a few e-mails. Nice guy i think and who knows what would have happened with him. Class act if you ask me.

Haven't talked with Mitch personally, but from what I hear, he's a good cat. I have one of his cd's, and he is talented, but I'm glad they didn't go that route. I'd be interested in hearing his voice with Ed's guitar, but he tends to write alot of stuff about love, which I'm not sure would have worked with what the guy's were writing at the time.

Yeah, Mitch seems to be pretty cool, a good talent, and down to earth. When you consider who VH was looking at for the frontperson slot at the time (Mitch Malloy, Sass Jordan, and Gary) you can see that they were looking for a different element than they had with Sam & Dave.

All three are also talented and class acts -- it would have been interesting to see how Mitch or Sass would have worked out. I love both Sam- and Dave-era VH, but the thought of a new direction intrigues me. (I liked most of the VH3 album...) I hope to some day hear the 5150 tapes from the Malloy and Jordan sessions, and the stuff recorded for the second Gary album.

(Or, at the very least, Ed should clone himself and let the clones work on all these alternative projects...)

To me, with Malloy, it looked like they weren't wanting a different direction. Mitch Malloy looked alot like Sammy, and seems to write a lot of ballad type stuff. They had just come off of Balance which had two of the worst, in my opinion, Van Halen ballads (Can't Stop Loving You, Not Enough).

Now Gary, definitely, he was very different.

I am not sure any ballad from Van Halen could be considered, "Good".

As far as CSLY, not a ballad in my book, more of a Pop tune featuring the most pick slides of any Van Halen tune.

It's all what you consider a ballad, which is debatable.

MM would have been an OK fit. He had some decent stuff in the 90's.

I am always amazed that a lot of rock fans treat the word 'ballad' as if it were a dirty word. Not Enough is a great song, (always reminded me of Queen a bit).

SEA, I agree with you fully. Why must people come down on these tunes? PSSSS, it's ok to like them, it doesn't mean you're gay.

He had some minor rock hits back in the early to mid 90's.

    Anything at All
    Nobody Wins in this War

I worked for a station that was appealing to the female demographic, and his tunes fit in nicely next to Seger, Phil Collins, Winwood, Def Leppard,.....kind of like safe rock.

Most real "rock" stations probably didn't play his stuff, but it worked well for some stations.

And my earlier statement about the VH bros. turing some "ordinary" into......

DLR isn't ordinary, but I come from the school of thought that beleives it takes the Ed and Al to add their special ingriedent to make things come alive.......that's why I think that a MM in VH could have worked, he's got pipes, lyrics are OK, just needs a little attitude and some riffs.

Say MrEd., I've got the impression you've got an "in" with the VH boys or at least someone within the VH "camp." Am I right, or just blowing smoke up my ass? Just curious.....Throw us a bone and give us a review of the second Gary album. What do you say?

Zahzoo, old boy, that smoke I'm blowing up my ass is green and of a particular aroma many in here would probably recognize (actually, I'm a weekend indulger only). It's effects are the reason I'm talking to "Bad Horsie." Seriously, I'd love to hear some of the stuff from the second Gary album. I heard it sounds like "1984" era VH.

I heard it was a more "Fair Warning" era VH sound. I have the song titles layin around somewhere. I would love to hear those tunes myself.
