Default Sirius, preparing to add commercials

So much for commercial free satellite radio!!

Sirius, which first made a name for itself by offering commercial-free music channels, is preparing to add commercials to its talk and sports channels and emphasized that advertising will become an important revenue stream in the coming year. The company is currently in the process of increasing its ad sales staff and Karmazin said he expects "a good number" of Stern's advertisers will follow him to Sirius.

I think talk already has commercials. I haven't listened to the talk stations a lot so far but I believe I've heard ads. The music stations don't, which is most important.

You can't be "Sirius"! Sorry, I had to say that!

Well, my unle got a Sirius radio for Xmas. I really want one, but, since I don't really listen to sports or talk radio, I still might get it!

Commercials are exactly the reason why I don't listen to the radio that often. I get enough commercials watching TV. I didn't want to convert to satellite radio before, now I'll never switch.

its just a matter of time before we're paying for radio services WITH commercial, ala cable television....

I still find the whole satallite radio thing iffy anyway. That's just what we need, to de-centralize EVERYthing.

With all pun intended it sounds like these satellite Cos gave their stuff out for "free" and now that you're all "bought in" or "hooked" into the system your no different than a coke addict.

Well not really. The "high" won't destroy your family, send you to jail and/or kill you.

I've been preaching the benefits of XM over Sirius for awhile now, this is just another reason to choose XM. Karmazin is more or less responsible for ruining broadcast radio here in N.Y. and Sirius goes ahead and puts him in charge of the company...lmao. He's gonna destroy that company....watch.

no you're right distortion9, sat radio won't kill ya or put you in jail

but the analogy I'm makin is that sat-radio promised commercial free play, so you run out to Best Buy or whatever, install this deck into your car and then pay a service fee. Then when they've got enough users they then change the rules on ya, pay to play. Just like your friendly neighborhood coke dealer. At first they give their product out for next to nothing, then after you're hooked you're willin' to do anything to get the schmooey.

Saw on the news this morning that Sirius and XM are in merger talks right now. They're trying to figure out what the antitrust ramifications would be, if any.
That should be an interesting twist.

    Mel Quashes Sirius-XM Merger Rumor
    Jan. 26, 2005
By Tony Sanders and Paul Heine

Mel Karmazin characterized a New York Post report of a potential XM-Sirius merger as the “third rumor” he has had to deal with in his first eight weeks as Sirius CEO. “I have not met with the [XM] chair or the CEO, so I have no idea where this has come from,” he said during his firm’s Wednesday morning (1/26) earnings conference call.

Commenting later in the call on a question about potential antitrust restrictions for such a merger, Karmazin said he would never try to predict what the government would or wouldn’t approve, adding that he thought such a merger would be a “difficult deal to get through.”

According to Post writer Tim Arango, the two satellite competitors have been meeting lately to talk about the possibility of a merger but the discussions have not advanced. Among the topics reportedly discussed is how to maneuver antitrust concerns that would arise from what would amount to a monopoly in the fledgling satellite radio business.

To alleviate those concerns, the Post suggests the two rivals’ strategy would be to convince regulators that satellite radio is part of the exploding mobil music market.

Combining XM and Sirius would ease a price war for content, reduce marketing costs and provide other cost efficiencies.

Damn, this XM vs. Sirius thing is starting to rival the Sam vs. Dave shit.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

I bought XM radio when there was no Sirius. I bought in late 2000 and it was a known fact that there were some commercial free stations and others that were NOT commercial free. Here's the ironic part of the story. Some of my favorite stations on XM had "commercials". The reason I call them "commercials" is because you would hear one 30 second spot about every 2 hours. If that bothers some people...then there is no pleasing them. Then....after XM got enough subscribers...they made ALL of their music stations commercial free.

What people don't seem to understand about XM and Sirius is that they MUST break for commercials in sports programming and talk programming. They are taking feeds from commercial broadcasts that have pre-programmed breaks. No choice! I listen to ESPN News on XM (which is basically the audio feed from ESPN News the cable channel) when I'm outside doing yardwork. They have to break for obvious reasons. XM plugs in promos for other stations in those spots. I like this because I get to hear what's happening on other stations later in the week.

Bottom line is this: Sirius is NOT adding commercials to their music stations. They have been commercial free on their music channels since day one and there is no plan to change that. XM started out with commercials on a few of their music stations (and very few at that) and now they are commercial free. I think the facts have been misconstrued.

That's cool, I kinda knee-jerked my post knowing little of Sat-radio.
I guess since I'm bitter about how radio has been lately that I wasn't surprised with voivod's post about these new services adding commercials.
Afterall it does cost something to use all the licensed events and it has to make a profit in the end.
