Are We There Yet? Arrives First
    Source: E!Online

On a weekend when blizzard conditions kept many potential moviegoers home, Cube's family comedy Are We There Yet? snowed the competition, raking up an estimated $18.5 million according to preliminary numbers Sunday. The Sony movie accounted for 22 percent of tickets sold.

Overall business for the top 12 films was just $85.6 million, down 27 percent from last weekend (but actually up about 4 percent from this time last year). Distributors blamed the low receipt count on appalling weather in the Midwest and Northeast, but there was also a dearth of major new releases in rotation at the megaplex and NFL playoffs on Sunday kept couch potatoes at home.

Aside from Are We There Yet?, the only other wide entry was the R-rated action drama Assault on Precinct 13, which opened Wednesday. The R-rated remake of John Carpenter's mid-'70s B-flick, about a bunch of cops, criminals and gangsters battling as, appropriately enough, a blizzard rages, only managed $7 million from Friday to Sunday to land in sixth place. This, despite the Focus/Rogue release's heavy-weight cast, which includes Laurence Fishburne, Brian Dennehy, Gabriel Byrne and Ethan Hawke.

Movies in their second weekend of release took severe hits. Last week's top dog, Samuel L. Jackson's inspiration hoops tale Coach Carter, dropped 55 percent, which was more than expected. The talking-zebra family film Racing Stripes was reined back 49 percent, down from third to fifth place. And Jennifer Garner's comic-book flick Elektra continued to short circuit, down a whopping 70 percent and falling from its dud fifth-place debut to 10th. Fox executive Rick Myerson figured the dip might have been considerably less had the weather been nicer, but he does concede the film, which has grossed just $20.2 million, is a disappointment.

Clearly not a disappointment is Sideways, distributed by the studio's Fox Searchlight division. Speaking from Park City, Utah, where blue skies are shining over the Sundance Film Festival, Seachlight executive Steve Gilula said excellent word of mouth and key Golden Globes wins had combined to create "a terrific boost" for the wine-drinking buddies comedy. Expanded to 699 sites, from 333 last weekend, in its 14th week the R rated release gained 32 percent, moving up from 13th to 11th place.

There was good news too for another winner at the Globes, Clint Eastwood's boxing drama Million Dollar Baby, starring Hilary Swank. Expanding to 147 sites from 25 last weekend, the PG-13 Warners release moved up from 14th to 12th place and earned the highest per-screen average of the weekend: $12,619.

In contrast, packed into 2,709 sites, the PG-rated Are We There Yet?, costarring Nia Long as the divorced mother of the two ride-along tykes who plague Ice Cube's journey, only averaged $6,829. Assault on Operation 13, slammed into 2,297 locations, averaged only $3,057.

Here's a rundown of the top 10 films based on estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations; final tallies will be released Monday.

    1. Are We There Yet?, $18.5 million
    2. Coach Carter, $11 million
    3. Meet the Fockers, $10.2 million
    4. In Good Company, $8.5 million
    5. Racing Stripes, $7.06 million
    6. Assault on Precinct 13, $7.02 million
    7. Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera, $5.01 million
    8. White Noise, $5 million
    9. The Aviator, $4.8 million
    10. Elektra, $3.8 million

    "I Won't Be Back"
Schwarzenegger calls ''T4'' cameo unlikely. The governor says he'll appear in the next movie only if producers film in California instead of Hungary.
    Source:EntertainmentWeekly

Producers of the upcoming Terminator 4 can probably say ''hasta la vista, baby'' to any hope of getting Arnold Schwarzenegger to appear in the movie, even in a cameo. Talking to the San Francisco Chronicle this week, the California governor said he'd been approached by the filmmakers to make a brief appearance in the film, which is expected to take place during the near-future war between humans and machines described in the first three films. But the actor-turned-politician suggested that he would not appear in the movie unless its production dollars were spent in his state. He said he told producers, ''They will never see me for one second in the movie'' unless it's shot in California. That's an unlikely prospect, since the film is scheduled to shoot this year in Budapest.

Not that Schwarzenegger isn't willing to take time from his duties in Sacramento to return to his old job. Last month, Schwarzenegger appeared on Fox's The Best Damn Sports Show Period, hosted by his True Lies costar, Tom Arnold, and announced that he would appear in a cameo in the host's upcoming movie The Kid and I. The comedy centers on the relationship between a screen star (played by Tom Arnold, who is also writing and producing) and a teen with cerebral palsy who wants to be an action star. Shannon Elizabeth, Joe Mantegna, and fellow True Lies alum Jamie Lee Curtis will also appear in the film. It's a safe bet that this one is not shooting in Hungary.

    Wahlberg Boarding Scorsese's The Departed
    Source: ComingSoon!
Mark Wahlberg will star in Martin Scorsese's The Departed at Warner Bros. Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter says he is in talks to join Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon in the police thriller, a remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs.

The story, set in Boston, centers on a gangster (Damon) who infiltrates the police department and a cop (DiCaprio) who infiltrates the gangs at the same time. The two find out that a mole is in each organization and race to find each other's identity.

Wahlberg would play a cop who's a key figure in DiCaprio's life. William Monahan (Kingdom of Heaven) adapted the material.

CORPSE BRIDE Trailer Hits The Internet
    Source:Cinescape

Apple has posted the trailer for TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE on their website. Available in four different viewing sizes, the trailer gives us our first true look at this gothic stop-motion animation film.

Directed by Henry Selick (THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS) and set in the 19th century, CORPSE BRIDE follows the misadventure of a young man named Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) who finds himself engaged to be married to two women: one, a prim and proper English woman (Emily Watson) and the other a dead-but-fun-to-be-with woman (Helena Bonham Carter).

You Can View The Trailer At This Link!

Was that a cameo of Zero the ghost dog from NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (sans spectral nose light and sheet) at the end of the trailer?

    Where's Ben in Elektra?
    Source:Moviehole

Remember last year when Ben Affleck was telling every man and his dictaphone that he was set to, or had just finished doing a cameo in "Elektra"?

You were probably as interested as I was when BF didn't show up in proceedings.

Got an answer today on that from a reliable source at Rupert's camp. The FOX insider tells me that Affleck did indeed film a cameo, appearing as "Daredevil" red-head Matt Murdock in a dream sequence, but once "Jen and Ben announced they were having a relationship, the studio got nervous and trimmed him out of the picture".

Nervous? Yep, seems they were a bit concerned about people perceiving the film as another "Gigli", an excuse for two love-birds to work on something together, and immediately cut all ties to the Poker champ. "I don't think anyone was that disapointed he didn't show up in the movie, were they?", the insider asks.

Be interesting to see whether they restore the scene for the DVD.

    Thor Hammers Sony
    Source:IGNFF

January 21, 2005 - IGN FilmForce was advised by a longtime reliable source that the feature film version of Thor is now set-up at Sony Pictures. Our scooper also advised us that David Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins) isn't currently attached to the project.

Goyer has stated in press reports and at the L.A. Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention in December that he was considering writing and directing Thor. Marvel Studios prexy Avi Arad went a step further, saying in a video interview at the Blade: Trinity premiere that Goyer was writing the script. That was an overstatement on Arad's part.

Goyer's reps advised IGN FilmForce that he is NOT writing Thor at this time and that there is no deal for him to do so but he is talking to Marvel Studios about the project. That's all there is right now: some chatter but no contract.

Goyer is also mulling a big-screen version of DC Comics' The Flash.

Robin Williams Bringing Krazees to Life
    Source: ComingSoon!
Robin Williams will star in a comic fantasy feature based on the preschool book The Krazees, says The Hollywood Reporter. The project has been set up at Paramount Pictures and Nick Movies, which recently teamed on Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

The book follows a young girl who encounters mischievous polka-dotted creatures known as krazees who show up on gloomy, gray days and vanish when the sun comes out.

The trade says that Williams will play the newly created role of a repressed psychologist unable to deal with his daughter hitting puberty and whose emotions manifest as computer-animated characters. As they wreak havoc on his life, the psychologist is forced to team up with the only other person who can see them and the one person with whom his relationship is most strained: his daughter. Williams also will lend his voice to the creatures.

The book was written by Sam Swope and illustrated by Eric Brace.

Brad Pitt to Play Jesse James
    Source: ComingSoon!
Brad Pitt is going to play gunslinger Jesse James in a period Western that will be directed by Chopper helmer Andrew Dominik and produced by Pitt's Plan B Films. The project is based on the Robert Hansen novel "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford."

In the book, Hansen re-creates the real West with his imaginative telling of the life of the most famous outlaw of them all, Jesse James, and of his death at the hands of the upstart Robert Ford.

James, a charismatic, superstitious, and moody man, holds sway over a ragged gang who fear his temper and quick shooting. Robert Ford, a young gang member torn between worshipping Jesse and taking his place, guns him down in cold blood and lives out his days tormented by the killing.

The book was optioned last year as a co-production between Scott Free partners Ridley and Tony Scott, and Plan B, the Warner Bros.-based company that was run by Pitt, Brad Grey and Jennifer Aniston.

The studio hasn't yet chosen an actor for the Ford role.

    "The Aviator" Buzzes Oscar Nods
    Source: E!Online

Howard Hughes wouldn't want to wash his hands of this affair--not with 11 Oscar nominations at stake.

The Aviator, Martin Scorsese's epic biopic of the obsessive-compulsive mogul, flew high as the field for the 77th Academy Awards was announced Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills.

The film scored nominations in all the top categories--including Best Picture, Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio, for his Hughesian performance), Best Supporting Actress (Cate Blanchett, for her take on Katharine Hepburn), Best Supporting Actor (Alan Alda, in a surprise inclusion for his turn as a corrupt senator), Best Original Screenplay and Best Director (Scorsese). The nomination is the winless Scorsese's seventh overall.

Other top nominees: Finding Neverland and Million Dollar Baby, with seven nominations each, going up against The Aviator, Ray (six total nominations) and Sideways (a somewhat underwhelming five nods) for Best Picture.

In the Best Actor race: Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda); Johnny Depp (Finding Neverland; DiCaprio; Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby); and big favorite Jamie Foxx (Ray).

Annette Bening (Being Julia) and Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) will restage a rematch of their 2000 Oscar race--a race won by Swank--in the Best Actress category. Their competition: Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace; Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake and Kate Winslet Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

Alda will vie for Best Supporting Actor against Golden Globe champs Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) and Clive Owen (Closer, as well as double-nominee Foxx (Collateral) and Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby).

Blanchett's fellow Best Supporting Actress nominees are: Laura Linney (Kinsey); Virginia Madsen (Sideways); Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda); and, Natalie Portman (Closer).
