    Default 10 years of balance

I just realized that tomorrow (January 24th) will the 10 year anniversary of Balance.

On that note, how would you rate all of the albums from 86 to 95?

It's been 10 years?? Good catch there, Thai!

Shit almighty. I still remember the day I heard "Don't Tell Me". The DJ on KLOS that day was in a taunting mood, teasing us that he'd be play it "soon". After the song kicked my fuckin ears off my head, it faded out: "Feeeeling better now? That's the latest from Van Halen, just like I promised."

    Lil' fucker!

And my ranking I guess is this....

WOW! I can't believe it's been 10 years already! I remember going into Blockbuster Music (remember those)in West Covina. I knew a girl that worked there. She let me listen to the whole cd a few days (I think it was a few) before it came out, right there in the store. I remember thinking it was pretty good for their latest effort, but not as hard rocking as FUCK. To this day I still love listening to it though. If I were to put them in order right now, I guess it would go like this:

Solid album for them. They did go in some different directions (hence the title of the album) but overall I liked it.

These 4 albums are tough to rank.

I think that Balance has some good songs but it's really overshadowed by shitty songs like CSLY and Big Fat Money. The Seventh Seal and the middle to the end of the album are the best parts.

Really, though, the only one locked in is OU812. I really don't like that album. The others are pretty interchangable. I'm not one of those people who thinks 5150 is an utterly amazing album or anything, either. It's pretty good, but I just can't "love" it the same way I can love something like VH1 or Fair Warning. The Sammy era had some fantastic stuff, but when it wasn't great, well, it was pretty bad and/or pretty generic (IMO only, of course!).

BTW, has anyone listened closely to Al's drumming on Balance? It's fantastic! Lots of interesting stuff going on. I find myself focusing on the drums more than anything just to hear what Al does to make things sound different. It's very, very cool. A very mature drumming performance -- it's tasteful yet very skillful.

I really don't understand the love for this album. I have said and will stick by my opinion that this is Van Halen's worst album.(Yes, I'd rather hear III). Ed's tone is horrible, the production is lacking, and the songs....... CSLY sounds like it should be on top 40 country radio ( ever heard "wave on wave" by Pat Green? Same chorus)"Not Enough" Sounds like it was intended for Phil Collins, but he didn't want to sound like a pussy."Feelin" Absolute worst song VH has ever released. What the hell do we need to hear ED destroying a piano for? "Balitc......." You know the one. Is Ed now Joe Satriani? Good thing he never did the instrumental album. I will say something positive about it though, "Big Fat Money " is bad ass. However Ed could played like Edddie rather than a suedo Jazz guy in the solo and it would have burned. Always thought that solo was a let down.
