    Gems from the Vault

So I'm scanning WinMX tonight looking to add to my expansive K-SCUM music library, and I have "Rock In America" by Night Ranger playing. So I decide to scan for some more Ranger tunes out there.
I find a guy who's an apparently NUT for this band as he has live cuts and b-sides like ya wouldn't believe.

One song jumps out at me that I haven't heard probably since the year it came out. From The Big Life album, there's a song called "Rain Comes Crashing Down" that remember thinking on first listen (way back in 1987) was just so-so, like the album itself. They felt like they were running out of steam. In fact, their next record after that kinda put my love for them out to pasture.

Hearing "Rain" again 18 years later with new ears however, I have to say that the song is surprisingly moving coming as it did from a pretty cheesy 80's hair band (which I loved anyway as a kid). It uses the keyboards this time as something to establish the atmosphere of the song, rather than just being around for the sake of being an 80's synth-rock song. The vocals don't seem as polished as the rest of their catalog (Jack Blades sounds like he's reaching very carefully for some notes), and the guitar solos don't seem as cookie cutter-like. It seems that this was the one song on The Big Life that got the most love, crafting and attention. It's a haunting tune and really gives a good name back to the 'metal ballad'. I must have played this one back five times already tonight.

Anyone else discover an old gem decades later and saw things in it you missed the first time?

LOL...I can't imagine there are too many Ranger fans left in the world...but I've got a soft spot for that first album. Probably due to heavy doses of 80's cassette tape fun-fun.

Say, I've got a blast from the past for any Cal folk of appropriate age and experience.

Ahhh, man...just when I thought I was out, you drag me back in to reliving my childhood.

"Sing Me Away" by far, to me, is the best Night Ranger song. First one I learned to play on the drums too.

GOD DAMN IT YOU BASTARDS..Now I must destroy you.

I enjoyed a lot of Night Ranger stuff. "Four In the Morning", "Hearts Away", I even liked "Goodbye". I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I saw Night Ranger once, with The Outfield opening, and it turned out to be a really good show. Gillis and Watson absolutely got off that night.

Another gem from the past.....band called Junkyard. It's Texas-style blues-rock, their self-titled debut is excellent. They broke at the same time Black Crowes did, the two bands played club shows together. The Crowes just caught on and Junkyard didn't last....too many songs about rehab on the second album, "Sixes, Sevens, and Nines". Hell, even Steve Earle would up on that album.

One more, then I'm done: Tora Tora's first one, with "Walkin' Shoes", "28 Days", etc. It stands the test of time, thank you pre-government Napster.

Hasn't happened in a while, but I used to love it when I'd by an album and be listening to it for the first time and I'd come upon a song and think "damn, I didn't know this was their song".

Again, back to Night Ranger.....when I bought the "Midnight Madness" cassette, I was surprised to find 'Rumours in the Air' was one of theirs. I'd heard maybe a few months previous and thought it rocked but never knew who it was. It was kinda like finding a five in your pocket that you didn't know was there.
