Happy little SpongeBob too gay for US conservatives

    This pisses me off.
My son is a big fan of the Sponge.

    Leave the Sponge alone.

On the heels of electoral victories to bar same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.
"Does anybody here know SpongeBob?" Dr James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, asked guests on Tuesday at a black-tie dinner for members of Congress and political allies.

In many circles, SpongeBob needs no introduction. He is popular among children as well as adults who watch him cavorting under the sea on the Nickelodeon cartoon program that bears his name. In addition, he has become a well-known camp figure among adult gay men, perhaps because he holds hands with his animated sidekick Patrick and likes to watch the imaginary television show The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

Now, Dr Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "pro-homosexual video", in which he appeared alongside other children's television characters. The makers of the video, he said, planned to mail it to thousands of schools this northern spring to promote a "tolerance pledge" that includes tolerance for differences of "sexual identity".

The video's creator, Nile Rodgers, who wrote the disco hit We Are Family and led the group Chic, says Dr Dobson's objection stemmed from a misunderstanding. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the September 11 attacks to create a music video featuring 100 well-known cartoon characters dancing to his song to teach children about multiculturalism.

Nothing in the video or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity.

Rodgers suggested that Dr Dobson might have been confused because of an unrelated website belonging to another group called We Are Family. That site is owned by a South Carolina group aimed at supporting gay youth.

I'd like to know where people find the time to lobby for this crap ...

I know my 60 hour work week doesn't allow me to lead a campaign against Kermit the Frog. After all, he's so gay ...

Be prepared...51% of America voted Bush back in...and the majority of that voted on the morals platform. You better get used to this...everything is open season for the extreme right.

If they want to talk about cartoons sending homo-erotic signals, VeggieTales anyone??? One of the lead characters is a big ol' cucumber. Plus you've got a tomato, celery, carrots, etc. So, I guess that means they promote a tossed salad then, right?

It's amazing the stretch a certain faction will go to, to try and take away innocent fun for kids. Just because their lives have been so sexually repressed that they couldn't get laid by a blind hooker in a whore house, doesn't mean they can come and fart on my fun.

Hey man, don't go the Veggie Tales route. My niece and 2 nephews love Veggie Tales. As for SpongBob - people have too much time on their hands. I work 40+ hours a week and that hardly leaves me any time to do "work" at my job b/c soooooooo much of my time is spent surfing the Links...

I think Veggia Tales are cool too. But you see what I mean by taking a harmless cartoon and trying to find fault with it?

I just hope you good folks realize that not all of us Bush-voting, Jesus-loving, Van Halen-rocking "extremists" share this misguided zealotry.

Dr. Dobson isn't necessarily a bad dude, but I won't defend this nonsense.

Besides, everyone can plainly see that "Bob the Builder" is more of a threat, in a Village People/construction dude kind of way.

    Sad but true......

Kinda weird that all thses people are so hell bent on morals, and making sure little Johnny doesn't hear someone say "FUCK" or making sure that Janet Jackson keeps her sweater puppets covered..... America wants this "indecency" to stop right?

Yet the porn industry makes BILLIONS of dollars annually...... PAYING MONEY for pornography.....not watching it on free tv or hearing it on free radio.... PAYING for it.

Who is buying all this porn?

I'm pretty sure we could find more important things to be concerned with as Americans other than if a fucking cartoon is gay or not.... Jesus Tap Dancin Christ.... I could care less if Papa Smurf bent over Brainy Smurf and gave him a coffee enema....it's the parent's job to monitor what their kid is watching. Take some responsibility for once and stop pointing fingers.

I agree. Just because I'm a conservative doesn't mean that I agree with Dr. Dobson's views on that subject. I think that this is a little extreme when the government starts worrying about this and not national defense.

It's not even the government making this stink per se.....get this shit:

"Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity" within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary, but it crosses a moral line," James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said in a statement released Thursday.

Is this not one of the 'special interest' groups many of the GOP faithful used to lambast on themselves? A while back George Carlin suggested that maybe it's time to start taxing these churches and religious organizations if they're so interested in public policy.

Then again, the idea of protesting a cartoon from the outset is just plain FUCKIN STOOPID!!!!

Leave it to the New York Times to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

In their zeal to freak out liberals they have turned over whatever rock of obscurity this clown was hiding under and they have now given him a NATIONAL PLATFORM. Had any of you heard of this guy before today? No, me either.

Thsi is why the NY Times is a failure as a news source, one they take some obscure asshole and make him into a big-time asshole. Now this asshole will be known to other assholes and will have more influence than he would have if the NYT had just...I don't know... reported real news.

Remember, when you make a mountain out of a molehill...you get giant moles!

That said, said preacher is a dipshit, homosexuality isn't even mentioned in the video (they showed it on MSNBC last night). Ironically, it isn't mentioned in the New Testiment either. What a dumbass.

It has nothing to do with the dickwad preacher, it's his message of intolerance that's the problem.

The movement to stifle free speech and the never-ending fear of homosexuality, that's the mountain here.

I agree, the NY Times shouldn't give this asswipe or any of the other nutjob groups like his the time of day. If the media and us as viewers could ever understand that, people like this "preacher" wouldn't have any influence and people like Marilyn Manson or Howard Stern wouldn't be famous.
