Rolling Stone refuses to run ad for Bible

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (AP) -- -- Rolling Stone magazine declined to run an advertisement for a new translation of the Bible aimed at young people, the nation's largest Bible publisher said Wednesday.

Zondervan, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, bought space in the magazine months ago as part of an ad campaign for Today's New International Version, said Doug Lockhart, Zondervan's executive vice president of marketing.

"Last week, we were surprised and certainly disappointed that Rolling Stone had changed their mind and rejected our ad," he said.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at the New York headquarters of Wenner Media LLC, publisher of Rolling Stone.

Lockhart said Zondervan, based in Grand Rapids, paid Wenner Media last July to run the ad in February, when the Bible is due on bookshelves.

On Tuesday, USA Today quoted Kent Brownridge, general manager of Wenner Media, as saying his staff first saw the ad copy last week, and "we are not in the business of publishing advertising for religious messages."

Lockhart said the ad features the face of a contemplative-looking young man and includes this copy:

"In a world of almost endless media noise and political spin, you wonder where you can find real truth. Well, now there's a source that's accurate, clear and reliable. It's the TNIV -- Today's New International Version of the Bible. It's written in today's language, for today's times -- and it makes more sense than ever."

Media outlets that agreed to carry the ad include Modern Bride, The Onion, MTV.com and AOL, Lockhart said. AOL, like CNN.com, is a unit of Time Warner.

Yeah, well, they don't care much for Edward Van Halen, either.

RS is a privately run business like any other, and thus under no obligation to spread religious opinions. There ARE religious publications that would love to print ads like this.

I think RS magazine sucks personally, but I can hardly blame them for refusing to print the ad.

Apparently someone wants to get huffy.

The thing I find interesting is that, "It's written in today's language," which conjures up images of Peter asking Jesus, "wat up, dawg?"

As a private company RS has right to decide what they want in their magazine. I don't agree with their descision but they have a right to not have it. On a sidenote with the "written in today's language" caption, I really don't want the Bible to be translated into ebonics. Think, the Bible could be turned into the script of GTA:SA!!!

True, but wouldn't that be preaching to the choir? I'm guessing the publisher of this updated-language Bible is taking literally the call to witness to the masses; the great unwashed, so to speak.

My lil' brothers were born again and when it happened to them, they became, let's say enthusiastic. (I'm refraining from terms such as Jesus freaks or Bible thumpers.) They lived quite impassionedly, actually.

Anyway, they handed out literature and tried to convert as many as possible, but they didn't hang out at the church door; they stood at the doors of bars at closing time. Same deal here, I think.

It's an add that would have paid the same as any other add placement. I personally don't see what the harm is, but as it's been mentioned, it's a privately owned company and if they choose not to be associated with religion whatsoever, even though it's not their add, that's totally fine. I agree with wray here. i don't really see the story.

Well see, that's one of the many little things that turned me away from religion permanently - the mindset that they are going to convert the "great unwashed". There is no one on this world that can convince me that THEIR way is best for me, for you, for anyone. Whatever way they've found, that worked for them. Wonderful, stupendous.....just leave me out of it.

I've found my way.....and it works for me. It probably would never work for you or your brothers, and I would never corner them outside their church to try to convince them so. It's not my right, and it's not my business.

No matter what the story is, the one thing to remember is Fuck Rolling Stone. They seem to have it out for Van Halen and my other favorite band, Rush. Now they are going after religion to ban from their ads. It's probably ok to have half naked people damn near fucking, but religion, surely they don't want to piss off their readers... Ok, enough with the sarcasm... Rolling Stone is and always will be a piece of shit so called publication. If anyone disagrees, check and see if Ashlee or Jessica Simpson has been on the cover in the last twelve months. Obviously music doesn't matter to Rolling Stone. On a side note, I remember reading their original review for the first Led Zeppelin album and they dogged it. Now, when you look in their reviews, it's got 4 stars or whatever the top rating is. Fucking shitheads...
