    The Comic-Book Thread

Hello there, true believers! Stan the Man here and I wanna know what comics you fellas are reading these days! This fella FH has eschewed buying single issue comics and prefers to buy the trade paper backs or "TPB's" as they are sometimes called because he's too lazy to put his funnybooks in the bags and boxes. He said something about "I'd rather have them collected in one book so they're easier to read". Lazy bastard!
He seems to have stopped being faithful to good ol' Marvel Comics and started collecting more "indy" titles such as Stray Bullets, books by Steve Niles, and even some books from those turncoats at Image Comics!
I'm hoping some of you out there have remained faithful to Marvel and are still reading such great but confusing titles as X-Men, The Avengers, and even ol' Spidey!
So list your favorite titles here, true believers, and maybe you'll win a famed No Prize someday!

    Excelsior!
    Stan Lee

hey FH more comics over here.

I read all the Spider-Man stuff. I just started reading New Avengers. This book looks great. Check it out if you haven't. I am a huge Marvel fan. I used to pick up more of the their books, but now I have to pay bills and that.

    Looks great!
I heard the new Avengers was pretty good. Have they divulged who the "mystery" member is yet?
I used to read The Avengers waaaaay back when George Perez drew it (this was back in the 80's). There's a TPB collecting his work in it that's well worth getting.
Another fav: John Byrne's run on Fantastic Four, which is in two collections at the moment.
I was reading Amazing Spidey when John Romita, Jr. was drawing but he left and the plotlines have gotten too hokey lately. I stopped reading X-Men around the time Jim Lee left the title because I got tired of having to buy 6 different series to keep up with all of the characters! I miss the days of having a team-book being one book in itself!
The Punisher has been great the last couple of years but ever since it went to the "mature" line a few issues ago, the writing hasn't been as good.
We discussed this before, but it's a shame what a downward spiral Spawn has taken.
I was able to make the transition of McFarlane only writing the issues with Capullo drawing, but then it seemed like greed set in on Toddy and he'd only have his name on there as "co-plotter". I wish this whole $15 million judgement against him bites him in the ass and makes him go back to writing and drawing again, maybe even for Marvel!
But, he's got his merchandising to fall back on, I'm sure.
I've been a sucker for more of the horror-themed comics lately, like anything by Steve Niles and The Walking Dead from Image.
Dave Lapham's Stray Bullets would have to be my favorite lately, but I'm afraid the series might be on the back-burner for awhile when he writes/draws "Detective (Batman) Comics".

    Thanks FH

From what I read a few weeks ago the mystery character wont be revealed until after the first arc. A lot people are saying its Daredevil since his secret identity was realeased to the public.

If you like horror stuff...I talked to artist Jerry Beck at Motor City con and he wants to bring back the Eeries and Creepies books. Jerry Beck used to work for Chaos and now he is putting out a book through Image. I'll keep ya posted if I hear any more about this one.

And just cause I have to brag. I met John Byrne at the last Mid Ohio Con. It was supposedly his last ever con appearance.

I always wanted to meet John Byrne! Although he's highly-talented, he's an angry, arrogant, old man as of late. You should read some of his web-postings.

    Cool Spidey page SM!

I have collected comics since I was 10 years old. The comics I read right now are....

Wolverine, Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, Superman, The Ultimates, Transformers, Transformers The War Within, Spawn, The Darkness, Spawn.

I also like John Byrne, I love the X-Men comics he drew, and the Fantastic Four, he also drew Wonder Woman a few years ago, I bought all of them.

I met a bunch of comic book artists and writers over the years. Some of the best ones I met..

    Dale Keown
    Mike Zeck
    Mike Deodato Jr.
    Greg Capullo
    Stephen Platt
    Peter Laird
    Peter David
    Mark Waid
    Joe Quesada

I also met Bob McFarlane, Todd's Dad, a few months ago. He was really nice. I saw his name tag, so I asked him are you Todd McFarlanes Dad???! He said yes I am. Then I said OHHH! TODD IS MY FAVORITE ARTIST! He talked to me for about 30 minutes and he showed me the new Spawn figures that were coming out soon. He gave me an autographed Spawn comic signed by Todd, and one signed by Al Simmons and himself.

The only one that wasn't friendly that I met was Joe Quesada. Peter David was a bit strange too, I handed him one Hulk comic to sign, that he didn't write, and he said "I DIDN'T WRITE THIS!" And he threw the comic back at me. LOL!
Right Now you're reading my post!

    What $15 million thing?

I used to collect comics (Hulk--obviously--X-Men, Punisher, etc.) but then it got too expensive during my college years. Now, I try to keep up on what's going on, but I only buy if the artwork is outstanding.

    Favorite Comic Artists:
    Sal Buscema
    Ernie Chan
Joe Jusko This guy was doing photo-realistic superheroes before Alex Ross knew what gouache was (and better, too, I might add). He's done some very memorable pics of the Hulk.
Arthur Adams (old school) This guy has influenced more people than Michelangelo. People rip him off to this day. Countless people have copied his Wolverine & Colossus (he's responsible for some of the most famous and beloved Wolverine pics), and he was doing the "Big-eyed", "close lines on costume", "knotted webbing" Spider-Man before Todd McFarlane knew what a kneaded eraser was.
Jim Lee the Michael Jordan of comics. Everything he draws looks better than whoever drew it last.
Adam Hughes His women are stellar.
    Michael Turner
    J. Scott Campbell
    Neal Adams
John Romita, Sr. He is THE Spider-Man artist. When I think of Spider-Man, I think of John Romita's Spider-Man

George Perez is my favorite comic artist, followed closely by John Byrne.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Q: who was the biggest douche that you have worked with?

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

I met Adam Hughes too. I forgot about that guy, I got him to sign a comic.

My favorite artist is Todd McFarlane.

Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Ron Lim, Mike Deodato Jr. Are my other favorites.

I also think Alex Ross, Marc Silvestri, and Dale Keown are great. I got most of Neal Adams art in a hardcover book, it was too expensive though, it was 80 bucks!
