Default VH isn't one of the favorites anymore - G3 Line-ups

    Hi there!
In a recent article organized by Imhotepzine (Norway), more than 200 guitarists choose their very own G3 Line-Ups. I thought it pretty strange to don't have Eddie Van Halen mentioned more times. The question to the musicians was:

"If you could start a project like the G3... besides you, mention two guitarists that you would like to share the stage with: "

Clicking the link below you have all the artists featured, including Andy Timmons, Brett Garsed, Bruce Kulick, Emppu (Nightwish), Erik Turner, Gilby Clarke, Jennifer Batten, Jeff Watson, Marty Friedman, Leslie West, Mattias IA Eklundh, Michael Schenker, Mick Box, Scott McGill, Silenoz (Dimmu Borgir), among others...

There are few guys mentioning Eddie.

Eddie's never been one of the 'technique gang' guitarists anyway, thankfully, so I'm not surprised that he's not mentioned that much. Also, Eddie's playing doesn't work that great in a jam session type situation so I'm not sure how well he would come across IMHO. Call me old fashioned but there's a perfect vehicle for Eddie Van Halen's inimitable guitar playing......Van Halen!

If they aren't picking Eddie it's prolly cause they don't want him making them look bad..JMO, but there aren't any on that list that can tune Eddie's guitar.

Hmmm, no accounting for taste, I guess.
What surprises me, is how infrequently VH appears in musician's
ads seeking gtr players. This was true of the South as well as in So Cal.
You see everyone mentioning influences from Motley to Pumpkins
to Rage, etc. but if I even mention Ed as an influence, it's most
often met with bewidered silence. Seems like people will always
associate him with the 'widdly widdly' or perhaps saccarine balladry (?).
    Alas... Mr. Misunderstood.

Well, I don't really care to see Ed in a G3 atmosphere either. If they asked me, I wouldn't put Ed on that list; and he is my favorite guitar player! Take it in context, Ed isn't a shredder.

Actually, I talked with Andy Timmons when he recorded an instructional video at the studio I was working at back in '95; I asked him what player that thought he would be most nervous in playing with and he said it was Ed hands down.

Think about it not in terms of shredding, but in terms of presence. I would shit my pants if I had to play next to Eddie on stage. I can't really say that about any other player.

IMO, Eddie wouldn't do well in that situation. He's great in a band setting, but he hasn't exactly put together a set of instrumental songs (complete songs to be played together with bass and drums) that he could play in that environment. It wouldn't go over well to play just Eruption, etc for an hour. Plus, it's been mentioned that he's very insecure of himself for whatever reasons, so he probably wouldn't enjoy it and might even feel intimidated around the other guys. Not to say he couldn't do well jamming with them, at least in his heyday. But nowadays, I'm not so sure.

I don't know... I think Eddie would kick serious ass in the G3. That song from "Twister"'s soundtrack is amazing... as well as all the instrumentals. "Spanish Fly" would be killer in the G3 set... and what about "Eruption"? It started it all!

Not sure if only living guitarists could be chosen, but Chet Atkins could play circles around ANYONE on that list or otherwise and not one person chose him. In my opinion, that says an awful lot about those lists.

I wouldn't pick Eddie Van Halen. Just because I find he's a little too 1 dimensional with his playing(yes I know I'm gonna get crucified for this post) I know tapping is his thing and all but I think its become a little tired. Not that it wouldn't be an honor to grace the stage with Ed, but I would personally want to share the stage with the likes of Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Kerry King, Randy Rhoads, Slash, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Frank Zappa.

You know, I just don't think that Ed is cut out for G3. I guess it's just not his thing. He even said in an interview, "I make too much noise by myself" and that he wouldn't be interested. Besides, Ed doesn't have nearly enough solo stuff to pull of a G3 tour. His set would be 316, Eruption, Spanish Fly, and that's about it. I really think he should consider making a rock instrumental album by himself. As a guitarist, I would love if he did that.

Don't worry about Ed -- Ed could hold his own against Vai or Satriani. I think people are forgetting the early days. Ed was playing as quickly and accurately as anybody. There's more to EVH than just tapping and divebombs. I haven't listened to it for a while, but I seem to recall him doing a lot of different, interesting stuff on Star Fleet Project, and that was essentially a jam. He IS more a songwriter than a jammer, though.

What I find weird is how many topics are now about things where people are saying "Ed couldn't really do that." Didn't EVH used to be the one guy people thought could do EVERYTHING?
