    Default Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa was a musical GENIUS. Steve Vai played for him for a number of years and has become a master of the guitar. Any Zappa fans?

Oh yeah man, I dig Zappa! Wish I could have seen him live, yet never got the chance. The guru rips and moved music to realms that we never would have known. Thanks & RIP ZAP!

I got to see Zappa live once. I think it was "Joes Garage" tour. I remember him before the show walking out on the stage when the house lights were still on. He was just kinda looking aroud at the crowd. I was like ... ...but that's Zappa. Good concert, glad I got to see him.

    Yup.
And leaving us at the age of 52 - when he was doing some brilliant work -
he's definitely one for the "Gone Too Soon" thread.
A lot of peeps don't get it - even Zappa heads - but "Jazz From Hell"
    is amazing.

I like many of his songs but don't own any of his CD's. Sometime I should get some. Here are some of my favorite songs:

    Titties & Beer
    Don't Eat The Yellow Snow
My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama
    Bobby Brown Goes Down
    Dirty Love
    He's So Gay
    Joe's Garage
    Valley Girl

Zappa has some strange/humorous stuff but his guitar work is amazing and extremely underrated. I think everyone knew he was out there, after all he named his kids Dweezil and Moon Unit. More power to him though lol. First instrumental album to get pulled off Wal-Mart shelves because he had an effect on his guitar and he did something and it literally sounds like fuck you fuck you. Big slap in the face to Tipper Gore and all those other tightasses in Congress lol.

Thought I'd revive this thread and hopefully get some discussion going on Zappa. In the past month or so I've been heavily exposed to Zappa and have really been listening to the stuff by the original Mothers before their breakup in '69.

It's amazing how the MOI moved stylistically between albums. I can't even believe that they recorded Cruising w/Ruben and the Jets at the same exact time as Uncle Meat. It blows my mind that they were recording an album of 50's style doo-wop tunes and crazy jazz rock type stuff simultaneously. What I've also found very cool, is how good Zappa was at editing. Like in "Holiday in Berlin, Full Blown," and "Little House I Grew Up in," both off Burnt Weeny Sandwich, he edited the tunes to cut from studio to live and its actually fairly difficult to tell. Besides a slight change in drum tone, its very hard to tell the difference...the original Mothers were so tight.

All the strange counts they use, like in "Son of Suzy Creamcheese," are crazy. It's amazing how Jimmy Carl Black and Art Tripp--Billy Mundi to a lesser extent, were able to mesh together on the drums.

He just had so many great musicians...I've been jamming out to Hot Rats and Uncle Meat lately. It blows my mind that Frank and Ian Underwood basically did everything on Hot Rats alone, w/Captain Beefheart singing vox on the only non-instrumental on the album.

    Love Zappa!

'Hot Rats' is my favorite Zappa disc. I was just jammin' that one the other day. If you like 'Hot Rats', you'll dig 'Zoot Allures' too. Some nice guitar work on that one.

I still throw on some Zappa once and a while and 'Sheik Yerbouti' and ' Joe's Garage Acts 1-2-3 ' are my favorites from Frank!

Actually, Mötley Crüe use to play 'Crew Slut' over the PA before they hit the stage!

I’ve got tons of music written, such a variety of stuff… Actually, next week or the week after, Wolfie, Alex, and I are gonna start jamming. Maybe we’ll give Dave a call and see what he’s up to.” - Edward Van Halen ~ 2009

    Steve Vai Featured

In the late 70s and early 80s, Frank Zappa would tour with a group of amazing musicians including a young guitarist with a shaved head who Zappa would introduce this way, "...and on impossible guitar parts, Steve Vai."

Vai will be one of many special guests on the upcoming Zappa Plays Zappa tour in Europe, and according to his official website, (www.vai.com) he will also be appearing on the U.S. leg of the tour.

5/30 - Brussels, Belgium at Forest National
6/1 - Manchester, UK at Manchester Apollo
6/2 - London, UK at Royal Albert Hall
6/5 - Paris, France at Zenith
6/7 - Athens, Greece at Lycabettus Hill
6/9 - Rejkyavik, Iceland at Laugardalsholl
6/11 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Tower Theater

Vai fans should note that because he is only a guest he may not perform for the entire set. The main band will feature Dweezil Zappa on guitars, Bryan Beller on bass and Joe Travers on drums. Other special guests on the European tour include Zappa alums Terry Bozzio and Napoleon Murphy Brock.

Sounds awesome! I hope they add some more dates than that for the US though, or I'll be driving one hell of a long way to see it.
