Default Will Wolfgang Continue The Legacy

Yeah, I know it's obviously too early to make any solid conlusions, but the question is do you think when its all said and done, Wolfgang will continue making music under the Van Halen name. Ed has said on many an occassion that Wolfie plays guitar very well, as well as bass and drums. I think with the musical exposure he's already had at 13, Wolfgang will one day be the next, well, his father. Not to mention that Ed says he sings well to. Then again, puberty....

I don't know if alcoholism has been proven to be genetic, but yes, he may end up a drunk...

Seriously, though, who knows? There have been many musicians who have had kids that go into some sort of arts whether it be music or acting, etc...

I need more proof. I ain't buyin' into the bloodlines argument. If he turns out to be good, then that's great. If not, hello trust fund.

I don't think he'll be guitar's next messiah, but he may be good. Look at Bruce Lee v. Brandon Lee. I remember they were rated by a close friend on fighting and kung-fu. Whereas Bruce Lee defaults to a 10, He said Brandon was about a 7.

I think it's great Ed's got him up there jamming. That's gotta be a great experience for him. I hope he follows in the music part of his Dad's footsteps though...

I doubt it very much. He may go on to become an accomplished musician with a following in his own right but the balance of probability is strongly, strongly weighted against him ever achieving anything comparable to his father. There will never, ever be another Edward Van Halen. It's kind of funny but EVH is, like many legends and geniuses in various fields, a total fluke of circumstance. Granted his talent is unequalled but think of all the things that had to happen for him to get where he got:
    1) What if his family never moved to America
    2) What if Alex never played the guitar for Eddie to swap over onto
    3) What if Alex didnt play drums
    4) What if they never met Roth
    5) What if they picked someone different to Hagar who failed miserably (granted, by this stage Eddie's place in guitar history was already cemented)
    etc. etc.

Most importantly, Eddie obviously had some sort of deep rooted need to do what he did on the guitar which drove him to practise and innovate and become the best. Chances are his son doesn't have that because it's so rare and maybe the motivation wouldn't be as great if you're a millionaire's son as opposed to a poor musician's son.

Don't get me wrong, Wolfgang may go on to do some good stuff which could be interpreted as 'carrying on the legacy' but just don't expect him to take guitar playing and music in general from where it is now and push its boundaries anywhere near as far as Eddie did. Look at Dweezil Zappa; has made a good career for himself but no one considers his work to be on a par with his father's.

Just my opinion! Any comments welcome.

IMO I think he will definitely be into music in one form or another however, it would be wrong to compare him to his dad. That's how so many kids get screwed up. People compare them to their famous parent and they feel like their never to good enough. I think for his own piece of mind, it would be the best thing for him to play drums just so he doesn't have to deal with that aspect.

And if Alex's son plays the guitar and they get a bass player and one of them sings.......

Exactly. Can you say "Julian Lennon?" He sucks. Musical talent isn't a condition of a person's last name. Of course Eddie's gonna say he's great, Wolfie is his kid! Who doesn't think their own kids are great?

If Wolfie does have talent, and if he wants to peruse a career as a rock musician, then more power to him. There are a lot of people who would like to see that happen. Let's just hope he doesn't become a drunken train wreck like his father. Remember, he's been seeing that all his life, too.

Its gonna be cool to see what happens, it'd also be funny if Ed let him join the band next year. That my friends would be a sight. 50 year old Ed, 52 year old Alex, 49 year old Mike, 58 year old sammy/50 year old Dave, 14 year old Wolfgang....., yeah

I'm interested to see if Wolfgang decides to make music for a living. He certainly has one of the greatest teachers. Personally, I don't think he would name his band "Van Halen" to carry on the name. Too much of a burden IMO.

I dunno, I found his appearance on the tour simultaneaously
touching and embarassing - only because Ed always introduced
him as "the future". That's a lot of pressure to put on a kid when
you're a legend, and I don't see how Wolf can ever escape
that legacy to achieve notoriety on his own terms when his
star dad always has a hand in his fate.

On the other hand, they seem to have a great relationship,
and how accellerated a development plan could anyone ask
for? But statistically speaking, he will likely forever be known
as "Oh, Ed VH's kid" and will have to really achieve some
personal success to outgrow his dad's long shadow.

Either he's gonna be the next... well... Eddie Van Halen or he's just gonna be a fat cow who mooches all of their money from their parents!
So you broke down, trying to leave town, I broke down crying on your return. You left me feeling hopeful, I'll never see your face again. You made for a bad lover's liver. You stole all the covers and busted my head. You made me such an asshole, I wish we'd never met. I'm tired of being bored. I'm through with the headaches.
