    Default Album Covers

    Yeah I'm bored.

I searched to see if there was a thread on the topic of album covers and didn't find one in this forum, so here it is.

So I was listening to Meatloaf "Bat Out of Hell" this morning and I was looking at the album cover on the little iPod screen......(anyone else besides me miss the old school vinyl with the huge album covers? Good times.) and I was thinking how that album cover has to be the most MISLEADING cover in rock history. I mean, look at it:

I see that and expect some heavy metal like Judas Priest or Slayer, but you put on the album and you hear some over the top, melodic Springsteen-on-steroids, horns and keyboards sounds I love the album, but I always thought the cover was an odd choice.

An album cover that really represents the music inside is Pantera "Vulgar Display Of Power"

From the first nanosecond of that album to the last, this album cover is a perfect visual of the sound inside.

Where am I going with this thread? I don't know, I just felt like talking about album covers, I left the thread title open so it's not specific so I guess that's what it is about.

What are your favorites? Least Favorites? Covers that don't fit the album, ones that do? Most artisitc? Etc etc....

Another great album cover that sticks out for me is KISS "Destroyer"

I just remember as a little kid seeing that cover and being blown away.....what is this? Are they superheros? Are they villans?
The older kids were way into KISS but being younger I was more into the visual-superhero side of the band.
God knows they had enough toys and merchandise to lead a kid to believe they were superheros instead of a rock band It wasn't until I got a little older did I realize the great album that this cover represented.

There are previous threads out there, but since they are designated to "favourite" or "best" album covers, we'll leave this one as an all-encompassing thread.

A couple of bad ones were one by some band I can't recall that showed like a fungused toenail or fingernail, and then of course John & Yoko's Two Virgins - still disturbing, even today. Johnny, we just didn't need to see that!

As for Destroyer - I was always drawn to Gene's boots - man if I only had a pair of those, no one would mess with me (at least back then!)

Ghost In The Machine is one that stands out for it's simplistic depiction of Sting 'n the boys in "T.I. gone haywire" style on the cover, and then the inner sleeve that (at least in 1981) was begging for holographic treatment.

One of my all-time faves, as well...

You're in luck, those boots can be YOURS for only $1,800!!!

Another album cover that I've always loved and used to draw (or try to draw) on my folders in school was Maiden's "Powerslave" :

Yeah, I remeber being Soooo disappointed that Bat Outta Hell was not
only nowhere near as heavy as it looked, but it was some overweight
slob crooning broadway-like anthems (that was then), and I probably
copied that Destroyer cover so many times I could probably draw it
    from memory right now.

But ya can't have this thread without mentioning Zep's In thru the Outhouse
inner sleeve that changed color when you wiped water across it...
Not to mention the plain brown wrapper was classic in and of itself.

Along those lines, I like PIL's generic 'Album', and thought it was funny
that Lydon originally wanted to make the cover out of sand paper so when
you put it away "it would fuck up all your other albums." Classic.

Let's not to forget that there were seven possible photos that could adorn the front and back covers, as well, shot from the perspective of each individual in the pub. Just about any cover Hipgnosis could be mentioned in an album cover list.

Never heard that about the PIL album. Of course, it could only affect your other records if you were one of those types that didn't bother to put your records back in the sleeve.

Die-cut album covers (such as Foghat Live or Led Zeppelin Physical Grafitti or George Harrison Extra Texture) were cool, but you always ran the risk of ripping them to shreds if you weren't careful sliding 'em between two other records in your collection.

Asia had some classics. Hate em or love em.

    Ditto Y & T.

And hey...for those who want to see the ORIGINAL prototype album cover for Van Halen I....it's the on the top over the classic we all know they went with instead, with the original lightning bolt logo much like the red vinyl promo LP.

I always thought "Diary of a Madman" 's cover was ridiculous. Campy makeup job and even worse props.
Even the scary font for the album title is bush league (the album kicks major ass though)

But IMO, he did a lot better on "Bark At the moon" Oooooo Scary LOL

    The best is still:

Y&T?.......wow.....those were the days...when I was a just a little snot-nosed punk (as apposed to a big one now).....I just loved Yesterday and Today (saw them at least 20+ times at the old Keystone PA).....and the album covers as well.....cool robot animals really appeal to the 15 year old stoner.....used to be pretty good at drawing them....they took a little time, but I was in detention so.....got to take my time.....great to see the other "Dave" is still remembered.......BTW.....Earthshaker rocked!!....do you still have that cover?....I would love to see it again......sadly, most of my albums from those days have been lost.

Balance is by far the best VH cover.

I dig the rings, so my second two fave VH covers are FUCK and BOV1.
