Default I need advice on replacement tubes for my marshall 2205 head

    hi. i have a marshall jcm 800 2205 50-watt channel switching head.

i think it takes EL34s and 12ax7s. i don't know squat about tubes.
i haven't played this amp regularly in YEARS and i haven't changed the tubes in about 10 years, maybe more.

so, i felt it was time to take this bad ass out of retirement, dust it off, and get a tube job done.

the last time i changed the tubes, Groove Tubes were all the rage. now, i've heard that they stink.

    what do you guys recommend??

also, what does it cost to get this done these days?
i brought it into the shop yesterday, but the tech wasn't in today and as far as i know hasn't even looked at it yet. i figure if you guys give me some hard core info as to tube brand or anything special i should have done, i will instruct the tech to do so.

    thanks in advance!

    Hey Ant -

I'm in the same boat as you as far as what tubes are best these days, but I'm glad to see you were using the EL34's. My Marshall head originally had 6550's in it, and I changed over to the EL34's a year or so after I bought it. I loved the difference immediately - much warmer and better tone, IMO.

I'm sure somebody can fill you in on what the best tubes are to get right now, but I would stress that you make sure you pay to get the amp biased after replacing the tubes. That's the crucial step, IMO. If I remember right, I paid about $50 a few years ago to have mine biased. Come to think of it, I'm probably due for that myself now.

    I 3rd that recommendation for JJ's.
Groove tubes are good tubes but they buy their tubes from other manufacturers and put their own bottles on them so you can't always tell what you're getting.
You can usually look at the inside of a tuve and tell where it's from once you've had some experience but most guys don't bother with that.
Bob at Eurotubes, on the other hand gets his tubes from one factory in Europe and pretty well explains what you can expect from any particular tube.
For your head I'd recomment the JJ 12ax7's or if you want more gain try EC 83's. Ec-83's can be a bit microphonic though so you might want to use 12ax's in the 1st and 2nd stage and then maybe an EC-83 in the last preamp stage, an EC-83 in the 1st stage and then 2 12ax7's. Sometimes you have to experiment to see what sounds best with your own rig.
The new Svetlana EL-34's are good tubes, that can take higher amounts of plate voltage, as are JJ's EL-34L's. You can bias you head a little hotter that way.
I've been using Svet EL-34's and 6L6's and amp happy with the sound.
I like to bias my amps a little on the hot side and have had no problems, even biasing 10-15 ma higher than recommended.
Whatever you do, preamp tubes self bias, but take wolfman's advice and get the head biased when installing the output tubes for best performance or it'll be a waste of time replacing them.

    Thanks for your input, fellas.

I spoke to the tech at my shop today and told him to replace all the tubes - preamp and power.. and to bias that thing! Not going w/ Groove Tubes, thank you very much.

He said he's really swamped and won't get to it until next week.
    I can't wait.

I'm really looking forward to resurrecting this badass amp.

The only complaint I really have about it is the effects loop kinda blows. It totally cuts the balls out of the boost stage... really waters it down.

I have a Vox effects loop buffer in there, but it never really did anything. Too damned loud. I guess maybe I never got into it cause I usually used the amp at low volumes in the house??

I dunno. I guess I'm a sinner of sorts cause I never really gigged with it that much. The year or two that I did gig with it, though, the amp was awesome.

Just a note to you, I emailed Bob one time and he responded quickly and was very helpful. One of these days I need to pack up my 5150 and take the hour and a half drive down there to his shop.
