    Default Broadband Phone Service?

Ok, anyone have any experience with this service? Vontage?? With the phone rates going up, at $24.95 (And I know, on top of your broadband charge) it seems like a pretty good deal.

Anyone have any feedback on service, additional fees, and so on?

    Thanks.

Mine's getting installed this week. A basic line is $13. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cool. I'm really interested as to how much in terms of "fees" and "add-ons" that will added to the $24.95 price, and the service and quality as well.

I can't speak for Vonage, but my roommate went with Time-Warner Cable's broadband phone service. $40 per month, unlimited domestic long distance, but that rate is bundled in with the high-speed internet, cable, DVR....I think it's $50 otherwise.

We've had only one problem, and it's been fixed so far by "resetting" the router. Occasionally, when talking for more than ten minutes or so, you get an annoying series of beeps and clicks and what sounds like someone dialing out. And I've had to cut more than one call short in order to deal with it, which is definitely frustrating, because usually, once it starts, it keeps doing it every couple of minutes. But like I said, it takes a minute or so to reset the router, and that seems to do the trick, for awhile.

I don't look at the monthly statement, so I don't know about extra fees, taxes, etc. All I hear is "40 bucks, unlimited domestic long distance", which would be beneficial, depending on your own usage.

I should add that sometimes this "beep" thing seems to occur when someone calls in (call waiting), and sometimes this doesn't happen at all. It may simply be some sort of cyber overload, i.e., using the computer, talking on the phone, watching the TV, call waiting all happening at once.

I've thought about a VoIP phone in the house - but I'm cell all the way, and I don't expect that to change. It seems to be really cool, though. I know a couple guys who are trying cordless VoIP phones that work using WiFi, which I wouldn't mind in the house.

I have Southwestern Bell, and I have unlimitied long distance for $20 a month. The broadband thing would be a waste of money for me.

my local phone is like $70 and my long distance about $15. I use cell for most calls, but dont get great reception at my house and as long as I can really keep my number like they say (because a lot of people know that number) I am strongly considering ATT voIP.

would love to hear some more feedback

I pay $49.95 for unlimited long distance and $26.95 for DSL per month. Add an extended area fee (or whatever it's called) where anyone in the metro area can call me for free, plus misc. fees and taxes, I shell out $102/month to SBC. I would consider dropping everything except the broadband if someone can prove to me that Vonage has just as good with service and was cheaper.

Yeah I figure $42.95 a month for the broadband plus $24.95 for the broadband phone service. At approx. $68 a month before any fees and such, I'm still making out compared to what I pay for phone and internet now.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but DSL will not work with these services right?

A real concern with VOIP is if you have an emergency....many times, your VOIP company may be in another state...you may call 9-1-1 and get misrouted to another state!

When you sign up with VOIP, make sure you complete a test 9-1-1 call right away. If it is misrouted, make sure you complain so they can fix it for you.

and furthermore, when we call from a regular non-voip landline, the 9-1-1 center will receive our current phone number and address...with voip, the 9-1-1 center does not get your address...so if you are unable to speak for some reason...like you got to the phone, had a grabber, and dropped the phone, with voip, they'd have no way to find you...even cell phone technology has the ability to pinpoint your location...but not with VOIP....you get what you pay for..
