    Hey Rockgod...
I've been writing and recording with my band for about 6 years now.

Lyrics don't necessarily have to Rhyme....check out the band 'They Might be Giants' ..they almost go out of their way NOT to rhyme but some how they still have hooks....not everyones idea of a cool song though.

Rhyming lyrics generally helps the listener remember the song and strengthens any hooks 'catchy parts'. Nothing worse when bands Rhyme too much though!...leave that to eminem!.

    cheers!

    Hey Rock god..

Once again there really are no 'Set' rules on this...I guess it comes down to the style of song and what you what to achieve. If you're doing a demo to send to record companies etc I'd suggest stay away from long intro's/versus and get to the chorus or main hook...that's what they'll what to hear. A simple structure for a lot of popular rock tracks therse days is:

    riff (or intro)
    1st verse
    pre chorus
    CHORUS
riff (same as or based on intro)
    2nd verse
    pre chorus
    CHORUS
solo or bridge (a variation on the verse chords can work well here)
    prechorus
    CHORUS
    CHORUS
    outro or end.

Thats a pretty simple structure to work around ...but by no means don't limited by this....It really all depends on the melody and where it 'wants' to go. Have fun!!.....

Just heard 'Stacey's mum has got it goin on' by 'Fountains of Wayne' on the radio....it fits into pretty much the same structure as mentioned.

Hey, dude...glad to see someone trying to write lyrics here.

Here's what you need to do: write. Write often. Practice. Write down bits and pieces. Keep a notebook at your bedside and write down lyrics if you think about them before you sleep or in a dream. Purposely sit down and tell yourself you're going to write. Force yourself to write, even when you don't want to.

I've been writing songs seriously since I was 14 (not too seriously since I was 6..."Jawas In The Night" was an early classic of mine. When I first started out I wrote a lot and only had about a 20% quality lyric rate. Now, 18 years later, the quality-to-crap ratio highly favors the quality lyric side.

Lots of people say that writing is free flowing. I say bollocks to that. Like anything else, you need to purposefully work at it.

One more thing: don't ever give up.

I hate to admit this but a good creative writing or poetry class can pay off in spades as far as your writing goes. Plus those classes are loaded with chicks so you get a bonus.

No, your lyrics don't have to rhyme.

George Harrison's song "Got My Mind Set On You" had a limited verse that was repeated over and over, it was his last huge hit.

Phil Collens is a cheif offender in the limited verse department. "I can feel it comin' in the dead of night, oh Lord"...I mean come on, that's the whole friggin song.

Write what you feel, if you're Bob Dylan then great! You won't know until you try. I have a friend who wrote great lryics, he had notebooks full of writing and he was always writing something down in it. I can't think of a better way to go.
