Mark Steven Johnson on Ghost Rider!
    Source: SuperheroHype!
Ghost Rider writer/director Mark Steven Johnson has left another cool update on the Superhero Hype! message boards. Here's what's new!
Sorry it's been so long since I've checked in, but we start shooting in about four weeks so you can imagine how busy things are! Jesus. Four weeks out. Hard to believe, eh? Especially for those of you, like myself, who have waited for this movie for such a long time. These updates are always hard to write as I have to toe the line between wanting to tell you everything while having to keep the details under wraps.

So, first off. Casting. Mr. Cage will be Johnny Blaze. Take it from me. That's a done deal. And I could not be happier. Nic is in the shape of his life. Lean and mean, like a motorcycle stunt rider should. I've cast a few more parts but I should wait until the official announcements come (very soon). But safe to say, when in doubt? Listen to Biggun!

The Budget. Nice to see that we've been "upgraded" from a $40 million dollar movie to a $51 million dollar movie! Maybe that's enough for a Dazzler movie but not for a Ghost Rider movie! Seriously, this is an event movie. And Sony knows how to make them right. Rest assured. That is not the budget. Not by a long shot.

Johnny vs. Danny. The great thing about making a Ghost Rider movie is that I get to take the best from both the Johnny Blaze and the Danny Ketch versions of the comic. So even though I am telling the Johnny Blaze origin story, there are elements of the Danny Ketch stories that I love and will include in the movie (so don't worry, Flamehead! Your beloved Danny Ketch will be there in spirit!). Caretaker will be there. And Blackheart. But so will Mephisto and Roxanne and the Quentin Carnival.

The script. People have mentioned the old David Goyer draft. Goyer wrote two really interesting versions of a Ghost Rider movie. I'd go to see either one of them. But my version is my own. The script is much closer to the comic. But at the same time, it's much more of a Western. A Supernatural Western is, I think, about the coolest idea ever. The Ghost Rider needs that open road as well as the city. I feel that is what makes him unique -- that he's a rider. Think Mad Max. Unforgiven. We have huge battles in the city but, ultimately, they will end up out in the desert.

The Hellcycle. Well, it's simply unbelievable. It's sculpt is finished and it went into the molds last week. It's the Chopper from Hell. No doubt about it. This is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life. The toys and the video game are already in the works and they are going to kick ass!

Better go. Sunday morning here and I have to get back to work. Will check in again later and soon, hopefully, with some artwork. Thanks for all your kind words and thoughts and criticisms. I'm making this for us!
It's always cool to hear it from the man himself! 'Retroman' also alerted us to this link which lists the possible plot of the movie:

In order to save his dying father, young stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze sells his soul to Mephistopheles and sadly parts from the pure-hearted Roxanne Simpson, the love of his life. Years later, Johnny's path crosses again with Roxanne, now a gogetting reporter, and also with Mephistopheles, who offers to release Johnny's soul if Johnny becomes the fabled, fiery Ghost Rider, a supernatural agent of vengeance and justice. Mephistopheles charges Johnny with defeating the despicable Blackheart, Mephistopheles's nemesis and son, who plans to displace his father and create a new hell even more terrible than the old one.

    Vaughn Helming Gaiman's Stardust
    Source: ComingSoon!
Variety reports that producer-turned-director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) has optioned Neil Gaiman's fantasy novel Stardust, about the adventures of a half-fairy boy, for himself to direct via his production company MARV. Here's how the book is describes:

Young Tristan Thorn will do anything to win the cold heart of beautiful Victoria--even bring her the star they watch as it falls from the night sky. But to do so, he must enter the unexplored lands on the other side of the ancient barrier that borders their tiny village. And beyond the safety of Wall, strange things can happen to a determined lad chasing his heart's desire into a magical world of wonders and perils--where anything that can be imagined can be found.

Vaughn is also in talks with Trainspotting writer John Hodge to come aboard his remake of 1960s TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for Warner Bros.
"I've always wanted to make a spy movie, and our idea is like nothing you've ever seen before," Vaughn told the trade. "The name is the only thing that's staying from the original show. The studio is giving us a lot of freedom to break the rules."

Bruce Willis Says Die Hard 4.0 Still on
    Source: ComingSoon!
Maxim magazine (via Freeze Dried Movies) asked Bruce Willis, who stars in the upcoming Hostage and Sin City, about whether or not a fourth "Die Hard" movie was still a go.
"It's Die Hard 4.0. They're working on the script right now," says Willis. "Doug Richardson, who wrote 'Hostage' is typing away furiously. It's a really interesting idea. And it's the first one that Fox has liked, so we'll see."

While he wouldn't reveal much about the plot, he did add, "John McClane is retired. I can tell you that."

MTV Goes Trippin With Cameron Diaz
    Source: ComingSoon!
MTV is taking a breathtaking worldwide adventure with Cameron Diaz. Joined by an ever- changing group of travelers, Cameron and her crew explore some of the most exotic, environmentally unique places on the planet and seek to discover ways to preserve them. The journey of a lifetime is all documented in MTV's new adventure reality series, Trippin'. The channel has ordered ten episodes scheduled to premiere Monday, March 28 at 10:30PM (ET/PT).

Trippin' combines adventure and the environment as Cameron and her friends, including Drew Barrymore, DMX, Rebecca Romijn, Blink 182's Mark Hoppus, Eva Mendez, Farnsworth Bentley, pro-BMX biker Mat Hoffman, Redman, Kid Rock, Jessica Alba and Kelly Slater, journey the planet to explore some of the most beautiful, and sometimes threatened, ecological wonders in the world. Their itinerary includes traveling to the glaciers outside of Patagonia, sand- boarding in the Atacama Desert of Chile, riding elephant-back in the grasslands of Nepal, competing in an archery competition in Bhutan and relaxing in the hot springs within the last remaining intact ecosystem in the United States, Yellowstone National Park. Additional adventures are still being planned.
"These trips have been the adventure of a lifetime," said Cameron Diaz, "and the groups we've been able to share them with have been as amazing and diverse as the locations themselves. It's truly been an inspiration to all of us involved with the show to learn and experience for ourselves the incredible impact we have on our planet and how we can continue to preserve and enjoy its beauty and its bounty."

"We've shot in some of the most remote spots on the globe and our viewers will be along for the ride as we discover these environmental treasures," said Lois Curren, Executive Vice President, MTV Series Entertainment. "Our goal of 'Trippin'' is to inform and educate viewers to re-invest in our world by providing them with resources to take action to improve their environment locally or in the regions explored in the show."
Executive Producers for Trippin' are Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Rogers, Lois Curren, Rod Aissa, Trip Taylor and R. Greg Johnston.

    Coach Carter Dunks Box Office
    Source: E!Online

Coach Carter dunked over Elektra--and everyone else at the box office..

The inspiration hoops tale, a ripped-from-real life drama starring Samuel L. Jackson as the titular coach, netted $23.6 million from Friday to Sunday, according to preliminary studio estimates.

As of now that's the second-best gross for three days of a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, only beaten by Along Came Polly, which made $27.7 million this time last year. (As Monday is the actual MLK holiday, business tonight may be higher than estimated and should also be strong Monday, but final figures for the three and four days will not be released until Tuesday.)

Coach Carter was a bit of good news for Paramount just before its new top executive, Brad Grey, takes over. The PG-13 release also had the best per-site average among wide releases, with $9,350 at 2,524 sites.

Meanwhile, Elektra the Jennifer Garner-starring Daredevil spinoff that had hoped for a superhero-like performance this weekend, not only was beaten out by Coach Carter, but also lagged behind the Fockers, a speedy zebra and some good company.

Meet The Fockers continued to rake in the bucks, finishing the weekend with a still solid $19 million to bring the Universal comedy sequel's total gross to $230.8 million.

Racing Stripes, featuring the aforementioned striped critter who thinks he can compete with the big boys (i.e., thoroughbreds), crossed the tape in third place with $14 million. The live-action Warners' family comedy, starring Hayden Panettiere as the girl who harnesses Stripes the zebra, and a whole bunch of celeb voices as the talking animals, averaged $4,405 at 3,185 sites.

Universal's critically acclaimed dramedy In Good Company, starring Dennis Quaid, Marg Helgenberger, Topher Grace and Scarlett Johansson, moved into wide release. The PG-13 film leapt up from 33rd place to fourth, where it earned a very good $13.9 million.

And that brings us to Elektra. The comic book-based flick, about a female superhero who rises from death to become a martial-arts vigilante, was sliced and diced by the competition, earning just $12.5 million. The PG-13 Fox release averaged just $3,901 at 3,204 sites. Even Halle Berry's dog Catwoman opened stronger than that.

Bruce Snyder, Fox's domestic distribution exec, took some consolation in Elektra relatively low budget (reportedly in the mid-$30 million range), but still admitted the film's busines was "okay, but not great." He speculated that superwomen just don't seem to draw as well as supermen. According to tracking, 53 percent of the audience was over 25 and more than half male.

In limited release, Geneon Entertainment's Appleseed, an animé import featuring the kick-ass warrior heroine of a futuristic society, zapped in at 31 sites, averaged $2,539 for $78,718.

Miramax's PG-13 French import The Chorus--about a inspirational singing coach who corrals a bunch of misfit kids into to music lovers--averaged a tuneful $7,904 at just two sites for $15,808.

Overall, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations estimates that three-day business for the top 12 movies was $115.7 million, up 18percent from last weekend and 23 percent from this time last year. With the Golden Globes announced Sunday, expect an uptick in business for big winners both in wide and limited release.

Here's a rundown of the top 10 films of the weekend based on Sunday estimates; final figures will be released Monday.

    1. Coach Carter, $23.6 million

Absolutely!! In the immortal words of Cartman: "Sweet, super sweet!!" I just hope this isn't like the last Blade movie-looked really really good in the trailers/promos, then stunk as a movie. Please, please, please, don't do this.

The Incredibles on DVD March 15: UPDATED
    Source: SuperheroHype!
USA Today reports that Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release The Incredibles on DVD with an all-new animated short that reveals the latent powers of Jack-Jack, the baby of the animated superhero family.

Jack-Jack's Attack chronicles "what takes place at the house with (babysitter) Kari and Jack-Jack while the rest of the family is on the way to the island or on the island," Pixar DVD producer Ann Brilz says. As the story plays out, the toddler reveals his latent powers.

Other extras include an alternate opening, deleted scenes, bloopers and commentary from director Brad Bird, Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) and Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson).

January 14, 2005 - Fox Home Entertainment has announced the first volume of Star Wars: Clone Wars for release on March 22 for a suggested price of $19.98. The disc will carry all 19 of the animated three-minute chapters/episodes and the five minute Chapter 20 episode.

Extras will include a fan commentary, a director commentary, a new featurette with George Lucas, a seven minute Clone Wars Connections featurette, an Episode III game trailer, a Republic Commando XBox demo, a preview of Planetary Forces PC game in the DVD-ROM features and still galleries.
Well, I guess there goes my hope that these would be included on the "Episode III" DVD...
