I'm fine with having Abrams as the director.

I'm actually surprised JJ wanted back. After TFA he said he was done w/ 'old movies' and wanted to focus on new IP, for fear of being typecast a reboot artist. I suspect the size of the comma's in his paycheque helped out.

I personally adored TFA - and think he's the absolute perfect choice.

Side bar - I was watching the Apple event yesterday and JJ was in the audience. Cool.

I am totally fine with this. In fact, this may have been our second best option other than bringing Ryan back (if the last Jedi is good).

Iím also so glad they moved the movie back to December. Not only does it give them time to make sure the movie is good, Star Wars at Christmas time feels right for some reason.

Christmas Star Wars releases still feel weird to me, but that's my age talking. It's fine, though. I'd think that was actually a condition of Abrams returning at this stage in pre-production.

Hell, as much as the fanboy whiners bitch about ROTJ, I'm surprised they aren't welcoming a do-over with open arms.
Abrams tends to make "good" movies, even if they aren't great. The one thing that is a risk here is that JJ is great a setting up a story and its mystery, but the third acts of his films/stories can sometimes be a little weak (in my opinion, anyways).

He won't make a turd like the prequels, though, which is the biggest thing we had to worry about. Although at this point, I'm not sure how much of a concern that really was. If nothing else he'll bring the same care to keep the same style which I was concerned about with Trevorrow.

We also know he collaborated with Rian Johnson and that relationship should help.

Seemed to me that Johnson, Abrams, Howard, or Edwards were the only choices and Abrams should get the right of first refusal.

Hopefully he just doesn't "remake" a classic film like he did with the 2nd Star Trek and TFA.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I have a feeling Rian has made certain creative choices with TLJ that will Force JJ to be more creative and less derivative.

They are pushing the hell out of those things, too. We were in target last weekend and they've practically got a full display just for those little creatures. It's so transparent in its intention that it takes the bite out of the humor mocking it.

I was skeptical of BB8 when I first saw it; but I really liked it. I'll hold judgement until after TLJ is seen - but right now, they look like miniature ewoks.

I never had a problem with the Ewoks, but maybe it's because I saw ROJ when I was like 5. To me, they fit the larger narrative of the hubris of the Empire (and the Emperor himself) being their own downfall. They set a trap and figured they had the whole thing locked up, but never accounted for these lowly creatures to throw a wrench into the plan. It fit with allegory of America in Vietnam, Russia in Afghanistan, etc.

Yeah, they were cute and marketable, but they fit in the larger story and made sense. I get the sense that these new creatures are really just eye candy and merchandise ploys, but maybe they do serve a larger purpose in the story.
