    Default 5150 combo owners

I don't own one myself, but I just came across this. You can unplug the speaker of your 5150 combo and plug it in to the extension speaker, which runs at 30 watts. This reduces your combo from 60 to 30 watts. Is anyone doing this? Does it noticeably change the volume or tone of the amp? I've considered getting a combo, but I might wait for the 6505 line to come out. It is identical to the 5150 line in every way except for name and cosmetics, but there is going to be a price drop. Peavey is also considering a 6505 (or 5150) 1 x 12 combo.

Just a side note. the 5150 has a flyback circuit built in, which allows you to turn it on without a speaker load attached. Most others don't have this feature so don't ever try this with another amp. You could and probably would fry it.
the extension speaker output is designed to work in in conjunction "with" the regular speaker, not as a speaker output by itself.
I haven't checked the circuit of the 5150 in a long time but you might even be screwing it up by attaching the extension speaker without the main speaker attached, I can't say without a diagram.
Either way, it's not a good idea unless the folks at peavey give you the go ahead.
Check the price of output transformers and you'll see what I mean.

Good to know Tribb. I got the info here http://www.wolfgangregistry.com/5150...5-preview.html

from a topic in the harmony central amp forum. I'm sure a quick call or e-mail to Peavey could get a more definitive answer. Might be worth looking into.

The info on that page apparently came from Peavey, so hopefully they aren't wrong.
