Default The Classic era is a bit of a myth- Dave could never sing live!

Listening to some bootlegs over the past few weeks, I realised that even though I much prefer most of the material from the DLR-era, Dave just could never cut it live. Sammy is just soooo much better as a live singer, I just way prefer hearing his material performed so well live rather than Dave shouting his lyrics and missing his cues. Any opinions?

Dave did fuck around alot and did alot of half ass singin. But if you listen to some of the old shit from the club days, VH1, VH2 and WACF tours, this guy was singin pretty good. I guess as they got bigger, boozin and druggin became a bigger factor, and obviously affected the live performances. Just a part of rock and roll man, it aint perfect.

I have some boots where Dave sounds great, so I am not so sure which boots you are discussing. Almost all singers are hit or miss live. You try going out every other night and scream at the top of your lungs for two hours and see how good it sounds. I have heard boots where Sam sounds pretty bad, but I still think he is a great singer. When guys like Pavarotti are in bad voice, they cancel the show, but most rock singers trudge on.

I find it funny that Van Halen made their name with Dave as a live band, and now people try to trash Dave as a live performer. Doesn't make sense.

I was watching the Largo boot last night and Dave was pretty good on that one. It seems like the first few songs he's so adrenalized that he's jumpin around and doin his thing and I thing it distracts him a bit and it fucks up the words, as well as the staged "I forgot the fuckin words" thing....
But as the shows progresses he gets better....maybe the booze/substances wear off later in the show? Maybe it takes a little longer to warm up the voice?

Another thing I noticed on that Largo boot, what is the deal with the audience? A couple times they show the band rockin out, Dave's wailin, Ed's shredding....... and then they cut to a crowd shot off on the side and they are standing there stone cold like Winger was on stage?

Maybe they were just really high......

I think alot of people judge Dave by what he is today, not what he was back then, and that's ashame. He may not be as good as he once was vocally, but back in the day he was a very good singer. That's of course if he wasn't too fucked up to sing. I've also got boots where Al is off, and Ed is drunk off his ass, and Mikey is flat. It's all a part of the rock and roll concert experience IMO.

Thanks for the opinions. Hands up, I'm not trying to start a Dave flame fest. It's just that from the cross section of boots I've heard from both eras, Sammy's vocals are generally so much better on such a consistent basis that I prefer to hear that stuff rather than Dave singing his stuff, even though I prefer that era from the point of view of the studio records. Any more constructive opinions welcome!

to be fair and material aside
    sammy is the better singer

a couple things to consider though
remember these dave boots that we are watching are old
and if we all have a copy how many times do think they have been
    dup'ed...yeah alot!!!!
board tapes, video...this stuff is not forgiving
    dallas free concert 91
sammy is cutting off all the high notes
and that doesnt explain dave REFUSING to sing the chorus to unchained

i would like to see dave work a little harder to sing the old stuff
but the last couple times i saw him i thought he was fine

these guys are both old school rock performers/singers
and we live in the age of "is it live or is it ashlee"!!!

    take your pick

This perspective has been thrown around a quite a bit... but if you weren't around to see and experience Classic Van Halen with Dave then you sure as hell are not going to get a clear picture of what it was like from viewing a bunch of damn Boots!! There's probably less than 10% of CVH's live performances around to see today. Not enough to form a comprehensive knowledge of the experience.

Another thing... if you weren't an adult or teen during this time your comparative basis isn't going to be in sync with the times nor the overall music scene back then. In simple terms you had to have been there at the time to fully understand and appreciate where VH was in the scheme of things.

I'm not saying you can't have an opinion of CVH... nor enjoy it enthusiastically and appreciate it... I'm just saying it's one thing to live it and another to read/Hear About It Later...

Dave had more days on the mark than off... especially the 1st 4 tours. Towards the end and especially the 1984 tour he really started slipping or at least his priority was more his own good time than his performances staying true to the material. VH has always been much better live IMO.

Based on 100 or so boots of the Dave era I have, I'd say Dave was great in the pre-1980 and then started to decline. The 1982-1984 stuff is painful in places to listen to.

Well, seeing as how it was the LIVE videos for "Unchained" and "So This Is Love" that got me hooked on Halen to begin with, I gotta disagree [that Dave can't cut it live]. Those were legendary performances and I would LOVE to see the whole thing one day. His voice was shit by the time the Sam and Dave tour rolled around, but there was a time, my friends when the heavens done quaketh at the sound of Dave's pipes. Can I get an Amen?

I suppose its possible, but the thing is his voice sounded GOOD, and not perfect. So if you're gonna tool up something in the studio, would one not want to make the vocals sound the best they could be?

I'm listening to the MP3 from the "Unchained" video now and the vocals sound far too raw to be a studio job.
