DVD- Van Halen: The Early Years. Thoughts?

I have been offered the DVD by a friend to buy. I would like to know your opinion on the DVD production. I have not heard much of late. Thanks all in advance for your time and thoughts. Much appreciated.

I bought the DVD a couple months back. No Van Halen Performances or video interviews with the band. I believe that Alex, and Mike gave some audibles, otherwise nada. If you enjoy watching a historical type of thing with alot of people who were associated with the band pick it up. If you are expecting seeing the band in action, you'll be dissapointed.

It's ok, nothing more nothing less. It's a par for the course unauthorised biography. If you're a real fanatic, you'll want to own it just for owning's sake even though you won't learn anything new. If you're a casual fan, there's not much there of interest.

My brother has it so I borrowed it from him and watched it. If you just want to see it, and not own it, I would just try to borrow it from someone to watch. It's probably not a video that you're gonna watch over and over again since it's just friends and crew from VH, basically. But I would definetely at least try to see it once. I sure learned a lot since I wasn't born when most of it happened

Bought it the day it was available.

It was okay, one thing that bothered me was the lack or rather absence of playing Van Halen songs during the documentary, the way vh1 does for their behind the music stuff.

Other than that if you are a true fan you know everything that's on it, except for seeing their high school friends, bandmates, promoters ect... talking about them.

It was funny seeing their original bassist Mark stone too, glad they went on with mikey !

But regardless a true fan would buy it no matter what.

I have it. Do I regret buying it??? NO...For you who knows? It depends on how bad you want the scoop on some early stories, etc. I agree with the reviews posted. There's no real Van Halen video footage except for a very little of Ed soloing,I think. But there are some cool stories about the band and how they became the "Van Halen" Dave era as we know it. There are some old photos I hadn't seen before and interviews with close friends of the early, early Van Halen Bros. There's Also an interview with "Jim Dandy" from Black Oak.... And Whoa!! That dude has a funky set of choppers.

I have it, watched it twice. Its ok, nothing spectacular, but for 14.95, not bad. I loved seeing Mark Stone (the Pete Best of VH)...you could see on his face during the interviews that he was thinking "Damn...shoulda stayed!!"

Thanks all for the heads up.
I will go ahead and buy. While it does not have the live stuff I would like to see, the behind the scenes stuff would be great to know of. As a school teacher of 11 yr old boys, this may get a run one rainy sports day. I educate my students in the Four R's. Reading, writing, arithmetic and Rock n' Roll. School of Rock, been doing that for the past 18 years! Thanks all.

    sphill,

As a fellow Sydneysider and VH fanatic, it's a good documentary for what it's worth. I only just wished that it was longer than the mere hour that it was. The lack of VH music was kinda weird at first but it was an authorised making so what do you expect. The interviews with original bass player Mark Stone and the old roadies make it all worthwhile.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

Its good for what it is ... I picked it up for around $10.

No Van halen interviews but lots of cool old shit to take you down memory lane. And with the way VH releases there archives this could be all we ever get ... And thats enough reason to own it.

I knew befire I bought it that VH footage would be limited because it was an unauthorized project, the band and Dave had nothing to do with it.

That said, it's pretty good. It gives you a good picture of the L.A. club scene in the late 1970's and you get to meet people who were there at the start and then all along the way up to 1985. They interview Van Halen's origonal bass player and they talk about the band's early days. They talk to dum techs and roadies and the security guy for the band.

I like this DVD. Sure, it would have been nice to have more video footage and music from the band. It's obviously done on the cheap. That said, it's actually very good, it filled in a lot of holes about their early days. I didn't know that their first bass player was with them for as long as he was.

I'd give it a B - , if you are a hardcore Van Halen fan you will get something out of it.
