Remembering Gary. What did he do well?

Over the past couple of weeks I have found myself listening to some Gary/Van Halen 1998 shows. (Thanks again to good friend from Ohio) I was fortunate to see one show in Sydney and like many fans I was initially drawn to Gary's movements around the stage and did not really listen to his interpretation of some classic Dave era tunes. Now that I have some of the shows I can listen now with a more critical ear.

In my opinion, Gary did a bang up job of some Dave material. It was great to hear these again and when I compare his version(s) to some of the other Dave bootlegs I have he does a remarkable job on them. Some may say better, but lets not start that war.

Question is. "Which Dave/Sammy song do you feel Gary did a great job on when he fronted Van Halen live?" If you want to say what songs Gary butchered then post that to.

My choice for good job- Mean Streets.

His version has real menace about it. Listen to the versions on "Live at the 10 spot" and "Wolfgang Attacks" bootlegs to refresh your memory.

What are your choices and why?

    Thanks Leo
I get around the van Halen net community. Sometimes you need to spread the question to other forums to garner a "world wide" view on an issue. Nice to be back here after an absence. Looking good. Nice to see people are still good to each other. Had a peek inside the army the other day and they are still hostile to many of us "sheep" as we are called. They are even hostile towards each other.

The Army can be a cool place, I've got nothing against it. I'm a member there myself, I only don't participate in the bashing. The freedom of speach there is a pro if you ask me. Hope you will stay here long, and post a lot

Not bashing the "army", as I am a member there to, but it does get out of hand there at times and some innocents get burnt. I will be posting here more from now on. Have a few things to say, questions to pose, opinions to defend and friendships to be made. Been a member here a while, but limited in my posting. Have a lot of things to catch up on mate. Cheers Leo.

    i don't know man ...

... i can only think of mean things to say about the dude even though he clearly has far more class than the rest of the goddamn band.

strange, i just can't stand the thought that he was in the band at all.

i think gary did a really good job with the most old dave stuff. way better than sammy does.
what i don´t like is his version of "why can´t this be love", but it is a sammy tune.

i feel a bit sad, that they didn´t release a 2nd album with gary.

As much as I love VH3, I didn't enjoy the Sydney concert, although that's the only one I have from this era. With Dave and Sam, Van Halen live sounded like a London Symphony Orchestra, with Gary they sounded sloppy. Neither did I like Dave/Sam covers, neither songs from 3 on that boot, and when Gary went to the crowd I thought how lucky I was to been listening to that album for good four years before I saw this gig (I really fucked up with tenses here, didn't I ?)

But Gary sounded better on Dave era tunes than Sam anyway.

I think what Gary did best was his presentation of the ENTIRE Van Halen back catalogue in a live context. Whatever he was asked to sing, he sung and sung well. It never worked out but look at those set lists now and say you wouldn't pay good money to watch that again next summer.

I reckon Meanstreet is fantastic. He did a great job... I kinda liked his version of Jump, but its an acquired taste. No one beats Dave with that one.

He did well on Sammy songs like Dreams and stuff considering Sammy's range is much bigger than Gary's.

I thought he sucked on the Sam stuff and ruled on the DLR stuff.....I still remember watching the Sydney show and hearing them start with Unchained....
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett
