I really canít stand instrumental records, except for Alien. I base my entire satch fandom in his debut and the cf records.

Vai just plays empty to me. In my gunslinger preferences, I gotta hear some blues rhythms for me to even warrant notice. And few of those virtuosos do that outside of DiMeola or Bonamassa. Stevens does, on certain Idol records. Satch does w CF.

    Man. I miss Stevie Ray.

This is my favorite piece of music from Steve Vai …

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

I love Satch's meandering legato lines. They always remind me of flowing water. However, his rhythm playing leaves me cold, even in Chicken Foot. In the song in the original post, there ain't no EVH groove in that, at all.

To be honest all these guys are amazing! Malmsteen 1990 in Edinburgh was my first gig and he was fantastic! Vai followed and have seen him and met him umpteen times in Scotland, pure gent and a brilliant genius. Satch seen many times too, once again awesone! EVH, well I have a soft spot! LWAN video was a game changer! Have had the pleasure of seeing VH in UK twice and in Vegas 2012. King Edward holds his own, innovator and just an amazing legend!!!! These other guys aren't imitators just evolved the instrument to their technique.

I like Satch, though I haven't found a lot that I personally like since The Extremist. This? Meh. I would think if it was his nod to EVH that he'd have more than that intro to show for it. Not a riff that EVH would come up with either IMO. Plus, Ed is way more slinky with his rhythm playing than this.

I dig that tune too - probably one of the more straight ahead rockers on P&W.

But - this is my favorite song on P&W, especially at 1:27 - just some really wild ideas and a cool groove:

Tribute to EVH doesn't mean "photocopy of EVH's style." It's a clear nod to Eddie. But it's still Satch, who has his own style.

Maybe its just me then? If you hadn't mentioned that he said it was a homage to EVH, I wouldn't have picked up on it.

No biggie man. Thanks for posting it.

I don't get Vai because he is a bit out there for me but nobody here is threatened by Satch moving in on EVH's territory nor does Vai get elevated because of that. Shit Vai was on EEAS which to some people may be the best non-VH album featuring Sammy or Dave. Some would say CF and that is fine. However both have replaced Eddie in some form of fashion. Why would one be elevated above the other? Maybe one can say one is elevated because he plays with Mike?

Its all nonsense. Every person has something to bring to the table. That said in the history of Rock, Eddie has a chapter. Satch and Vai are lumped in with other guys in a different chapter about shredders. Get a few paragraphs with Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, etc

BTW the intro to me sounds like the tapped passage for Crazy Train solo. Just picked
I think the difference is that Vai is not really into rock anymore, whereas with CF satch proved he still had a rock "itch" to scratch. Technically, they're both amazing lead players, let's leave it at that. Not as good rhythm players as Eddie, especially not as good in a band context because Eddie played with his brother his whole life, while these other guys kept switching drummers.

I'm a fan of the man. I played the heck out of Surfin', Flyin in a Blue Dream, The EP that has The Crush of Love on it, The Extremist, and the double CD he came out with right after that (one disc live; the other unreleased tracks). I saw him in concert at least twice back in the late 80's and early 90's. Funny aside - my 16 year old raided my old concert T's and wears the Satch 92 tour shirt all the time.

I think overall, Satch created better songs than Steve Vai solo. More memorable melodies.

After listening to music non-stop for 50 plus years, I cannot listen to any instrumental rock music at all. You'd have to literally pay me $200/hr to sit down and listen to this type of music.

Rock music IMO demands a vocalist (that is killer) to add story and human connection to the art form. Rock music does not function well without a vocalist. It's so important to make the overall thing work.

To think you would want to disadvantage yourself as a rock artist, and go out without the vocal element is so insane to me.

The only instrumental sruff I've ever listened to is Jeff Beck and Pat Metheny.

Surfing, Flying and Crystal Planet are 4 star discs for sure. Great rock and roll.
