I am happy that recent tumble dear James took wasn't more damaging! This is cool vid to help me differentiate some of James most stellar guitar parts. Lemmy is featured. I was hoping they were going to pull out Murder One for the tour as I thought it had a fantastic groove and vibe but I guess not. They have become pretty predictable with the tracks off HWTSD unfortunately.

I feel the need to piggy back to Kirk getting imo relentless criticism regarding his guitar playing across the internet. At 3:23 above is recent positive example of his skills. I for one love the modulation in his pitch and have always found him to display excellent fluidity in his playing. His specific style of playing goes along with Metallica's music. I mean they utilize a lot of sound effects and James is more of a vocalist than just a singer. I do understand people feeling he isn't living up to his full god given potential.

Could it be because he is quirky and laid back that people find it fun and almost a sport to take pot shots at him? Just my own thought processing.

I know he's an equal partner, but it's always seemed he's more of a hired hand, as opposed to a full member. Dave Mustaine was more outspoken and had his fill of air time in interviews and on stage. Kirk is more in the background, and it's definitely Lars & James band, and has been since Mustaine left and Cliff died.

As for Kirk's playing, I think he's a great guitarist, but again, he's no Mustaine. It definitely seems more like he's riding the coat tails of Metallica's success as opposed to actually contributing to it. On Kill Em All, many of his solos were actually Dave's solos but with subtle changes. And because he doesn't really shred anymore, he probably gets knocked for that too. He also never would have had success if he had stayed with Exodus. In other words, Exodus wouldn't have been bigger because of Kirk. He wouldn't have made them any bigger or better than they were.

All that being said, he fits into Metallica's music quite well and I think he's been a perfect fit for them over the years.

James and Lars are both super headstrong in their songwriting, you can tell from all the interviews over the years and the snippets of them arranging and working on ideas.

There isn't room in there for a Dave Mustaine type contributor. He fits his role, which is to come in at the end and lay down some solos.

That being said, it still doesn't change the fact that he is one of the luckiest guys on the planet, as Metallica is probably just as successful without him and someone like Brett or Blofeld's Cat in the band (might even be better!), while that band doesn't even exist without Hetfield. That's the big difference.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Metallica now on tour in INDOOR ARENAS in Europe. Different "in the round" type stage now. Some changes to the summer Stadium set list. A few more deeper cuts now. Also kind of funny to see SEEK so early in the show.

On the other hand, if the only thing he contributed was the Enter Sandman riff then he made a great contribution to Metallica's success because that's the one song that broke them into the mainstream. But he did a lot more than that.

It's awesome how these guys keep changing up their setlists.
And often not just a song or two. Great way for them to keep things interesting for themselves and the audiences.

I think it's because they truly love to play. It's not just some get in and get out thing for them. It's also a testament to how much they appreciate their fans. It's also great because with youtube, everybody already knows what will be played usually by most bands.

    Metallica keeps you guessing...

Definitely have to give them props for all of that.
See what fan friendly can accomplish? They deserve the accolades they get.

There is a reason that they play stadiums, and VH plays sheds, when VH is overall the much more popular band.

They look at their fanbase as a customer, not the enemy. Amazing concept.

    Agreed.

Metallica has probably been more popular the VH since about 1996, some would even say 1991.

They are FAR more popular around the world, especially in Europe, Asia and South America. They are like Iron Maiden where they play Stadiums around the world. Outside the USA, VH can play big crowds in Japan and that is about it.
