    Default Amp recommendations please!

I am on the search for a new amp. I currently have a Mesa Boogie rectoverb 1x12" combo, which occassionally goes through my Marshall 1960a 4x12" cab.

Anyway, I am really starting to dislike my tone on this amp (my guitars are a PV Wolfgang Std - Ivory white pat pend model, and a soon to arrive Byrd Guitars Super Avianti), I have been through a number of amps in my time including: 5150 head, 5150 combo, Marshall 50 watt plexi RI, JCM800, JCM900SL-X, DSL100, JMP-1, Rivera Rake Reverb and a Boogie DC-5.

I am in the UK so stuff like Mojave's, mods by Voodoo amps etc and the like are way out of the question due to their HUGE price tag and being unavailable here.

I am looking for something more with the tonality of a Marshall but better.

Tones I am after, EVH (DLR years), early Yngwie, Blackmore etc.

So what have you got, why do you like it and why should I consider it?

    Thanks

Not sure if they're available in the UK/Europe yet, but I'd definately check out a Krank Revolution head. Granted I'm a Krank dealer, but I'm currently running one of these along with my Dual Recto and 5150II. It's not going to have the insane gain of the 5150II or Dual Recto. I liken it to more of a JCM 800, with the Recto thump. The clean channel is super clean. No distortion at all. The Lead channel will get you what you want and then the sweep knob will allow you to tailor the sound for various guitars/songs.

Again, not sure if they're available yet in the UK/Europe. The Krank website is www.krankamps.com

    Good luck with your search.

I'm waiting on a Peavey Vtm 60 I picked up for $180. It should be here soon, it's being shipped up from the U.S.. I'll post a thorough review once I get it and get a chance to play around with it. It's my first tube amp. They go for real cheap though, and I've heard a lot of good things about them. Worth looking into for the price I think.

A pro musician friend of mine (James Byrd) used to use VTM120's when he had his Peavey endorsement. He said they were good amps for the money, mind he had a wall of the things.

If you get a chance, try out a Mesa Nomad 45. I play mostly on channel 3 with the pre-amp set to vintage. It gets the early VH brown sound really well there.

Default Try amps with EL34 tubes.

The sounds that you're looking for (early Eddie, Yngwie) come from Marshall amps. I believe that Marshalls from that era used EL34 tubes. These have a different sound than the 6L6 tubes that are in your Rect-O-Verb. I have the first edition of the Rect-O-Verb, which doesn't come with a bias select for tubes (6L6/EL34). Mesa makes several models that do have a bias selector switch. I would suggest that you try to get a single rectifier head with the bias selector and use EL34 tubes.

Get a Line 6 and you'll have every amp that is worthy of having.

Thanks for the opinions, but its gotta be tube powered. I have nothing against Line 6 amps or other digital gear, but they just don't "feel" right when I play them, the attack time, the response, the sustain, it all sounds.... well microchippy to me. Plus there is a high end frequency on those things that you can hear that drives me mad.....

I wanna get away from the Boogie stuff as I find it too dark for my liking....

I think I am looking at Soldano or an Engl Blackmore. Thanks for the opinions.

Okay, here's the amp you're looking for.
    http://www.harrystraub.com/amps/products.html

Check out the Cantus head. Everything you are looking for. Click on the pic of the head and read the description of the amp. You will be amazed at the quality of the components you are getting for $1100.

I can personally vouch for this amp. Our lead guitar player has one. He mostly plays with a Blackmore tone, but he let me dick with it, and I got some killer early VH tone out of it.

My Mojave Peacemaker is perfect for the early Van Halen tone.............and just about any classic rock tone! I sent mine back to Mojave to get a new Power Dampening mod added. It cuts the volume like 12db. That is perfect for gigging. I have a Hotplate also, which will cut the volume down to bedroom practicing level. You can even pull 2 tubes and still run the amp safely. Its probably the best amp that I have ever played on.

I would also suggest a Splawn Quickrod. I put this thing in a close second place. It has a lot more gain, and can be used for more metal type stuff. Very smooth and warm gain. I have the Splawn Pro Mod...........which absolutly just rips! Through a set of V30s it can rival any Mesa, SLO, Ubershall, etc.

Speaking of amps, I am looking for one too. Does anyone have experience with the THD Univalve? Or anything else good in that price range? The Straub looks nice, but I am looking more at low-wattage amps for the time being.

I just bought a Peavey JSX (Joe satriani) and it rocks. All tube, louder then shit, 3 channels, and very affordable. It's also built pretty tough. I went from Marshall to this and I've never looked back.
