I absolutely love Dream Theater. I saw them in 2003 with Queensryche then later that year, I met Mike Portnoy at a "meet and greet" he did at Sam Ash. I can't wait to get their new CD.

You're right about it being off James's album. I just found out tonight that it was just of his songs and not the new DT album.

    Sounds fucking unreal!!!!!
Not as Heavy as TOT. Sounds like a cross between I&W and Awake. The title track is 24 minutes long!!

Only one more day until Octavarium! This sucks, I have a final at 9 in the morning tomorrow and I won't be able to concentrate because I'll be thinking about buying it. Maybe I'll just get up earlier and buy it before.

Its a good album but its not a great album.

Alot of the songs sound like DT doing someone else. A couple songs actually sound like DT. Of course thats all my opinion.

I find it enjoyable and listenable, but i dont feel its as good as previous works.

Like i said alot of it doesnt FEEL like DT.

I've listened to it once so far, and I think it's good but it'll take some more time to get into it.

I'm going to listen to it again sometime tomorrow, but Panic Attack was one song that blew me away. Fast, heavy DT. Also the second half of the title track was amazing.

It's different, but Dream Theater seems to surprise me with each release. It's not as heavy or as dark as TOT but who cares, it still really, really good. IMO, James LaBrie is the star of this record. His vioce is amazing. Not one instrumental to be found on this record. A first for them. Portnoy is surprisingly laid back for the most part. That's not to say he dosen't play some incredible parts, just more of a groove than I'm used to from his DT work.

The Root Of All Evil - So far this is my favorite song on the album. I love how they start off the album with the same piano note that ends TOT. The opening music revisits "This Dying Soul" and then again about 4:45 into the song. At first I thought it was unintentional but this band does nothing by accident. This is classic Dream Theater. Progressive, heavy, melodic. Great song. This one is going to be great live.

The Answer Lies Within - Odd choice to put a ballad as the second track. Good song but not their best. This could have been on Falling Into Infinity. It has that Anna Lee feeling.

These Walls - I love this one. This has the best mood. The pre-chorus builds beautifully. Jordan Rudess does some really cool keyboard work at the tail end.

I Walk Beside You - Holy shit!! An up tempo ballad. This is totally different than anything they've done. the closest thing to it is probably the second half of Lifting Shadows Off A Dream. James Really shines on this track. His voice carries this song. Portnoy gets a great Neil Peart vibe on this one. Awsome. Crank the volume knob and rip it off for this one.

Panic Attack - Here's your heavy track. This is more in line with the last album and 6 Degrees. Great song. Another song that's going to shread live.

Never enough - Different during the verses but they pull it off. the music and vocals blend so beautifully in this song. LaBrie's voice, IMO, serves as the most intersting thing here. But then again what they gave him to sing against is awsome.

    More to come.....

    BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Actually I&W didn't have any instrumentals.

I'm on my second listen right now, I'll have more to say later.

My main complaint with the album after listening to it like 8 times by now are the vocal melodies.

Alot of them sound like previous DT songs.

Just found our why The Root of All Evil reprises This Dying Soul in sections.

Turns out Portnoy wrote all these lyrics about his alcohol addiction and wants the music consistant so they play well together. He's putting one on each album. Starting with The Glass Prision on 6 Degrees, and then This Dying Soul on TOT, and now The Root Of All Evil on Octavarium.

He's planning on doing about 2 more on the next couple albums and then wants to play them all in order live for a 60+ minute song.

    Rad.

The album has grown on me some more. These Walls and Panic Attack are great. Also the title track is epic. I think Jordan is showcased more on this album than previous ones. A lot of his playing reminds me of Yes. I'll definitely be listening to this a lot, and hopefully get to see them on tour playing the new songs.
