    Default The Dream Theater Thread

I think that Metropolis Pt.II is one of the greatest concept albums of all time (right up there with The Wall IMO). I also love Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance. Can't wait for their next album to come out. These guys get better and better as time goes by.

I have to say, I'm with ya on this one! DT just absolutely rocks! A friend of mine introduced me to them when "Images and Words" was released and I've been hooked ever since. And you are right. It seems like every release out-performs the previous. I'm a HUGE fan of "Awake" and "Falling into Infinity"...(I think that's the name of it...). Petrucci is just a MACHINE!!!

Without question, my favorite band on the planet. Havent put out a shittier record yet.

What I love about a DT show (beside a sonic kick in the balls) is that normally when you go to a non-DT show you'll hear musicians saying stuff like: "I love this band but they need a different drummer." or "What!? That song sucks, my band plays it better than they do" etc.... Not at a Dream Theater show. you can tell the other musicians in the audience because they spend a better part of the show with their mouth agape, drooling over Petrucci's solos or Portnoy's everything.

With Jordan Rudess in the band, they're nothing short of perfection.

God, DT is mind-blowing. My second favorite band behind VH. IMO Scenes From A Memory is the greatest concept album ever made. It's so hard to rank the rest of their albums because they're all great. I agree that DT is a musician's band. Although I'm not a musician, you can tell that each member has mastered their instrument and when they're playing you want to watch them all but you can't. DT music = Ear candy.

I went to go see DT when they came around for thier tour for Train of Thought last March. It was really amazing because they played for about three hours total with just one ten minute intermission. They played A Change of Seasons in its entirety. One of the best concerts I've ever been too. Portnoy didn't do a drum solo but it was good enough just seeing him do the drum parts to every song. I hope they come out with a new album soon and I'm sure it will be as good as Train of Thought or maybe even better.

Pure... freakin'... genius. Dream Theater is probably one of the most (if not the most) talented groups of musicians ever. I love just about everything. I'm not a huge fan of the original vocalist but Labrie just rocks. When are they due for a new album? I picked up Live At Budokan but I really want a new studio album.

I love DT, and esp Scenes From a Memory- I love concept albums and think this is maybe the best one ever. I also love ACOS.

I can't seem to get into Six Degrees or Train of Thought as much. I just need to listen to them in the proper mood I guess.

    Default Dream Theater

I thought l'd open a thread on one of my favorite bands, What do you guys think of them? Fav albums? Fav songs? concert experiences? please share.

I think they are one of the best bands getting around these days, and there aren't many of them.

I noticed in a couple of other threads that Falling Into Infinity was the lest favorite DT album, l think it has some gems in there. Hell l'll rather listen to that album than listen to the recycled shit Jet/The Darkness etc put out.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Discuss if you want, let me hear from you DT Fans.

Train of Thought takes a couple of listens to get used to, Six Degrees is a continuation from Scenes from a memory.

I read somewhere that they are going into the studio very soon. And also said don't expect a Train Of Thought album, they did that to get it out of their system.

I do believe though they are a musicians band, although non-musicians can enjoy the music, it's just alot of friends and workmates just can't seem to get their heads around the music.

I would have to say that my least favorite is When Dream And Day Unite. I just can't get into the album since Labrie's not singing. It's probably not bad but I just can't seem to give it a chance.

Thai... A couple others to check out:

These are a little more mellow...
    The Silent Man
    Take Away My Pain
Surrounded (awesome song... one of my favorites)
    The Spirit Carries On
    Solitary Shell
    Hollow Years

    Hard and heavy...
    Lie
    War Inside My Head
The Test That Stumped Them All
    As I Am
    Honor Thy Father

Covers (some of them have different singers including Bruce Dickinson)...
They've done a ton of covers from a lot of different bands
    The Trooper (Iron Maiden)
Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple)
Since I've Been Loving You (Zep)
    Led Zeppelin Medley
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John)
    Tears (Rush)
    YYZ (Rush)
    Rush Medley
    Damage Inc. (Metallica)
    Master of Puppets (Metallica)
The Thing That Should Not Be (Metallica)

    Non-album track that's pretty good...
    Cover My Eyes

They're so varied in their music and there's so many great songs that it's hard to even put a list together. I guess I know what I'll be listening to for the rest of the day!

Other than Iron Maiden, I think Dream Theater is the best band in the world! So awesome...fortunate to have seen them three times since summer '03. Met Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess and LaBrie at the Seattle show in 2003.

SFAM is my favorite DT album...up there with Queensryche's Mindcrime and Promised Land for concept albums.

Be sure to get the two Liquid Tension Experiment CD's, and also "An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess." Great display of diverse musicianship!

It'll be real interesting to see what direction they go with the next album. Will it stay in the metal realm, like TOT? Or back to more full-on prog? Or melodic metal like FII?
