Heads up! Official Steve Vai Thread

It's time for a Steve Vai thread.

Today I just got the Alien Love Secrets DVD and it kicks ass. ALS is one of my favorite Vai albums and seeing performances of all the songs is pretty cool. Juice and Tender Surrender rule.

I can't wait until his new album next month, Real Illusions.

I saw Vai on the G3 tour in October of '03, but I'm going to see him in Portland next April on his own, and I have an EVO Premium ticket!

It's impossible to list all of my favorite songs, but I'll try to make a reasonably short list...

    For The Love Of God
    The Attitude Song
    Juice
    Whispering A Prayer
    Blue Powder
    Erotic Nightmares
    Answers
    Windows To The Soul
    Touching Tongues
    Fire Garden Suite
    #?@! Yourself
    Burnin' Down The Mountain
    Tender Surrender
    Giant Balls Of Gold
    I Would Love To
    Jibboom
    The Blood And Tears
    I Know You're Here

I just picked up G3 Live from Denver with Vai, Satch and Yngwie (FAT) J. Malmsteen.

Satch and Vai just SHRED on this DVD. Yngwie just looks like 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag....

Vai stole the show at the last G3 tour.

Vai does kick alot of ass! I'm hopefully going to see him when he comes to Boise in April. That would be one hell of a show but I do agree on how it is sickening on how good he is. Whenever I watch the G3 DVD or the Astoria DVD, I look at him and then at my guitars and I almost start crying.

Howdy Vai fanatics!!! Some updates/news from the Vai camp. Vai's new album "Real Illusions: Reflections" is coming out 2-22-05. He is nominated for a Grammy, again for the 8th time, this time for his song Whispering a Prayer...listen to this song when you are just chilling out and relaxed! Vai's tour starts THIS March 3rd in Phoenix.
A cool thing that Steve is doing on his website is describing in detail the songs on his new album...the story/thoughts behind each song, the equipment used, and other tid-bits of info. He is currently on song 3. So far my opinion is that he has really thought out a story about a character in his mind and it is going to carry through the entire album, but of course we can only read about the first few songs....There are 11 songs with a bonus track, I hope it is available in the U.S....probably not though!
Check out what he has said at http//www.vai.com/realillusions/index.html
Don't be afraid to check out his tour, Eric Sardinas is opening on all dates and he is a superb slide guitar player...don't miss out on this tour!
    Just go for it!

I appreciate Vai, and I have some of his stuff. Even a couple of his DVD's. The guy has clearly mastered the instrument.

That said, I've always found his tone to be a little - shrill. Kind of nasal or whiny, for lack of better terms. And I've never thought much of his rhythm playing. I think that accounts for why he's spent so much time as a solo artist, as opposed to as a member of a group. And yes, I'm aware of Zappa, Alcatrazz, DLR, Whitesnake, etc. Just my 2 cents - nothing more.

I've never really gotten into Vai's stuff outside of DLR, but I recognize his talent. I gladly paid $40 to see him in a few months. I'm pretty psyched, considering he is one of the best
