Peavey HP EXP - pics & review

Here's a few pics of my new Peavey HP EXP. I sold one of my Wolfgangs (a Special stop-tail) a couple of months ago thinking I was going to buy an American Std. Strat. Well, after playing about half a dozen of them at the local music store I was very unimpressed to say the least. THEN I picked up the HP and was totally blown away - especially by the price (I paid $480 for the guitar and got the case for $80).

The guitar has 24 frets, 2 humbuckers, master tone, and a volume control for each pickup. It also has a mahogony body w/ maple top + quilted veneer, an ebony fretboard, gold hardware, and binding on the body and neck. Finally, it also has Grover tuners and a string-thru body. The neck is very small and very comfortable - maybe even smaller then the Wolfgang neck. The workmanship on the one I got was great - I have no complaints at all and I consider myself very nitpicky about stuff like excess fret glue, wavy binding, etc.

Anyway, I'm really pleased with the buy. If you're looking for a Les Paul type guitar but want something with a bit of a different neck, check out the Peavey HP EXP.

    On with the pics...

Nice looking guitar. A dealer friend has had a few come thru the store and they have been quite consistent in regards to quality. The first few he received had no inlays at all. Personally, I liked the look better without the inlays, but in reality, they have nothing to do with the playability. The tops I've seen have all been very "quilty".

Sounds like you've got a winner.

that is one terrific looking guitar.

i think it looks like a wolf without the 'skewed' horizontal profile.

infact, if you were to take a 2d drawing of that into illustrator or some cad app, and just used a 'skew' modifier, it would be the exact same guitar.

i didn't know they made these. perhaps the wolf replacements will be similar.

if so, i'm going to be getting some new guitars i think.

The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.

Forgive my ignorance but is this Peaveys replacement for the Wolfgang? If it is I am dissapointed....they should have followed in EBMMs steps and done almost an exact copy.

Its a nice axe tho. Beautiful top.

This actually looks like a superior instrument.
I'm extrememly surprised that peavey would put something like this out, using good parts, and then charge more for the VH basswood model with inferior parts.
You might want to experiment a bit with p/u's but after checking the stats on it I have to say I'm impressed for the money.
The top is a maple veneer, which is why the quilt is so nice, but that's no crime, especially because they're using mahogany for the body, a great tone wood, and where your tone will be coming from anyway. The ebony fingerboard will brighten it up and add more snap to it, the same as a real maple top would anyway.
That instrument probably sounds better than a trem model would under the same circumstances. With the right p/u's probably very much like a Paul in sound.
All in all I'd say you scored well on this one.
    Enjoy it.

Nope, the Peavey HP has been out for a little while now. The Wolf replacement isn't available yet.

I haven't had the chance to record some clips yet. I'll try to get some later on, but don't hold your breath on that.
