Default What would YOU like Van Halen to do next?

In a perfect world, I would like:

    • Release any and all DLR era LIVE dvd's (you know they have some coughOAKLANDcough )
    • Release Sammy Era remasters (with any unreleased tracks layin' around on the 5150 studio floor)
    • Release Live Dvd of the 2004 tour (similar to LWAN but with a second disc of the behind the scenes stuff like "Long Road to Cabo"
    • New studio album with Sammy
    • WORLD Tour (I say world, because if SEA doesn't get to see Eddie live...she's gonna burst!)
    • Repeat all of the above!

I'd love to see Ed quit drinking. His playing was much better during the Balance/VH3 tour when he wasn't boozin, or boozin as much. Also, switch up the setlist a bit damnit. And of course record a rockin new album and hit the road in summer 05.

Sounds perfect! Gotta' agree with Sucka's suggestion for Ed, too. Perhaps they should all go to Hawaii for a few weeks (while Ed's at the Betty Ford...) relax, crash on the beach as they say. Then, go back to the studio, record a kick-ass album, and unleash a tour next spring. AND KEEP THE GOLDEN RINGS!!!

I'd like new material. I don't care too much if they tour, and I think rigorous touring just exasperates the problems that the band has. Do some writing sessions with Sam, and see what happens. If the result is better than what came out in 2004, run with it. If not, bring some other folks in and experiment a little.

What I'd really like to see the band do is to try some non-traditional things. The old cycle of write/record/tour/repeat should be broken. Start releasing things over iTunes on an ad-hoc basis. There's no need to have a whole album of material bundled together at once anymore, and it would let the band work on their terms and schedules. Wouldn't it be cool if items that were previously unreleased started to be let out the door occasionally? I may be mistaken, but I don't believe the band is under contract to produce anymore albums. They've got their creative freedom, and it'd be pretty damn kick-ass if they exercised it!

Dude, if you're gonna use the phrase 'perfect world' well SUPERSIZE that mutherfukker!
    • Box set featuring unreleased AND fresh material from all three singers AND let Mike sing lead on at least one tune!

    • A video or two, eh?

    • World tour with all of the above mentioned personnel, with Sam, Dave and Gary alternating the order in which they take the stage with Ed, Al, and Mike.....all culminating with a three singer-super jam for the finale.

    • SEA and TP coming out onstage to dance together during "Poundcake"!!

    • Theatrically released rockumentary film chronicling said tour called "Running With The Devil".

I see what you're saying, but I'd hate to see the traditional full length album go away. I like the idea of the iTune-type releasing of singles, but maybe use that as in-between-album treats. Maybe record 15 or 16 songs for an album. Release the 12 song album and save the extra tracks for after the tour and release the songs individually during the off time. That way, the longer breaks between albums could be a little more bearable.

I'll never understand why this band insists on holding the material? Look at Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, Motley Crue or shit even (gasp) KISS. They all released box sets adding tons of unreleased material or demo versions of songs.....all remastered. Kiss is even starting to release some live dvds from the past.

C'mon Ed, unlock the vault door!

I don't think it's about money. If it was, that material would have been out as quickly as it could be made back during the multi-platinum days.

Greenpaw, I'm just not convinced that the band can remain viable as a unit for the amount of time it takes them to record an album, let alone do that and tour. I'd like to see them fall into a pattern that's sustainable as they get older. Sammy and Mike seem as though they'd like to be on the road more often, but Ed and Al don't. It's got to be tough to reconcile those two positions.

New Balance-like album with Sam. I could care less about DVDs or even world tour.

Eddie gets sober, gets back with Val, starts a new band, & makes some killer tunes.
