Who knew that being a war hero meant that you also had to be a Bon Jovi fan?

We are going to need A LOT more women in our military.

Did you call him Jean Girard yet? He might be waiting for you to take the first step.

Speaks volumes about why the company is in those straights to begin with. Be honest, be transparent, and it'll go better than you'd ever think. Of course, that just means a slightly lesser severity of suck, but...
I think most companies do it in this secret fashion to lessen the likelihood that someone does something stupid, either with customer/company information or something worse. The night before we did this there was a workplace violence situation a few miles from our office where a guy got let go, went out to his car, grabbed a gun, went back inside and shot his boss in the head killing her.

I've been on the wrong side of these conversations before which is what made it so difficult. You know they did nothing wrong to be in their spot, you didn't make the decision, but both of you find yourselves in this room having this discussion that's going to make their life suck for a bit. Our company did try to do right by the people we let go by giving them fairly generous severance packages along with paying two months of COBRA premiums, but it still sucks. There was a guy who had worked there for 10 years, had given the company his all, but due to a change in business we wouldn't have any projects for his skill set.

Everyone was pretty professional about it, but clearly some people were getting emotional (how can you not?) which made it tougher to get through the meeting. I'd prefer to never have to do that again.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I feel for you man. This shit is what I do for a living, thank God I've been lucky enough not to have to do a ton of layoffs. But I was just involved yesterday with letting a guy go who'd been with us for 10 years. Long story, but was incredibly difficult. Just hope the guy finds something else soon.

The only thing I can say about keeping it all secret is that you (the company) trust those employees with your business every day. If you handle it right, and communicate appropriately over time, you should be able to continue to trust them with your business when things go crooked. It's all about culture.

Every situation is different, but that applies to most.

I've been on the other side of those conversations so I really empathized with the people I spoke with today. They all got a decent severance which softens the blow, but now the office feels a bit like the reception after a funeral where people don't know whether they should still be sad or move on to more normal interactions. It's tough to laugh today, that's for sure.

I've heard of companies doing these in one giant room and just letting people go en masse, but we tried to take a personal touch and do this in individual meetings. It was a massive operation to get everything together for it and we put in some late nights to make it happen (I got home last night close to midnight). Usually when you work late like that there's a celebration of a job well done on the other end, but in this case, it just feels like crap.
My wife is about to lose her job of 17 years. A large retailer is closing half of their stores including the one she manages. When it was first announced in January they offered a pretty decent severance package, 2 weeks of base pay for every year you worked for the company but capped at 20 weeks total. Even at 20 weeks not bad. The down side is that is where our families health insurance comes from. Her employer covers 60%. To get the severance she has to stick around to the end. So we talked about it and felt it would be the best thing to do. About a week ago her employer filed for bankruptcy and now the severance packages appear to be gone. The head of HR keeps telling the 450 managers losing their jobs that it is now up to a judge to approve the severance packages. Chances are she won't get shit and we'll have to now figure out how to afford $1800/month health insurance. I've shopped the health exchange in our state and the cheapest option is $1600/month with huge deductables and very little coverage.

    Sorry to hear that Sickman.

You have to start to wonder what the point of insurance is when its costing north of 30 grand a year.

Obviously the exchanges have done little to solve this issue.

When you pay 1600 to1800 a month plus thousands for a deductible and probably 20% coinsurance it is NOT INSURANCE.
Sick I feel for you brother. I hope you get on a group plan soon.
