    Sinner's Swing.

    Undeniably Van Halen:

    - great riff
    - classic VH swing beat
    - smoking solo
    - great libido inspired lyrics accented by the classic DLR falsetto scream
    - the rhythm section at their finest (have they forgotten how to play that fast?)

    Anyway, a signature VH tune......

Dave era: Romeo Delight or Tora! Tora/ Loss of Control both for the same reasons: agressive riffs played with agression, you got the feeling that everything's gonna blow up but...it doesn't, they're off of my favourite album.

Sammy era: Spanked, I just love that intro, great dark riff and awesome chorus.

It's still tough to pick up just one song....

    Undeniably....

    Unchained.

That is an easy answer for me. The reason? The riff! That riff is the best riff in the history of rock and roll for me. I could listen to that song 1000 times back to back and get just as jazzed about it as if I was hearing it for the first time. The lyrics and great, Al and Mikey are just SOLID throughout.

The riff though....that is it for me.

Dave - Unchained. This song simply kicks ass. In your face rock and roll, one of the greatest riffs of all-time.

Sammy - "5150". IMO some of Ed's best guitar work. Awesome riff, amazing solo. Sammy's lyrics and vocals are great. VH's trademark background vocals, Al's drumming.

Hear About It Later....but honestly, it's like trying to pick one sports car out of 150 sports cars.

I dig that tune because the riff is simplistic, groove-based, but so full of tone and Ed's "sparkle". Ed used effects on this riff that served as a vehicle rather than a gimmick. Dave's lyrics are typical Dave, off-the-cuff, phrase-based banter that simply fits the groove and the song rather than attempting to take us somewhere strange....throw in the subtle use of both the vocal harmonies and the rhythm section itself, and it's just a very unique song at a time for the band when EVERY song was unique, creative, and FUN.

The first few bars of this song, along with the first few bars of "Unchained", are pretty darned representative of Ed's sound. The melodic Ed, the shred Ed.

    Unchained.

Halen had been around for some time, and I had indeed heard a few of their tunes, but THIS song reached out of the radio, grabbed me by the nutsack, pushed me against a wall, shallacked me on the back of the skull with a shit-caked shovel, kicked me out the back door, and wouldn't let me back inside until I went out and purchased "Fair Warning" from the Music Plus at the Westminster Mall.

Oh yeah.....it also melted my other records when I got home. Dave wasn't kidding.

Would have to be "Somebody get me a doctor".
It was the first song I heard in 1979 in a little town record store and I have been hooked ever since. It had the riff, the groove, the fun and the solo. To this day it gives me the biggest grin when I hear it played.

Gotta be Drop Dead Legs for me. There's just somethin so fuckin groovy and sexy about that song. Just the way it moves around just sends chills down my spine. And Dave with those in your face lyrics..oh yea, you know that you want it baby. You just gotta love that song. IMO it just represents what VH was about.

Impossible to pick one, but today, I'll say Humans Being.

Incredible intro leading into thundering drums, Sammy sounds amazing on the song. The solo is chilling.....damn, beginning to end the song just rocks...

Dave Era, I might have to agree with Sucka (except about the lyrics), Drop Dead Legs is musically a fuckin monster....

    Hands down.... SUMMER NIGHTS

Just a really happy sounding tune, great guitar, awesome vocals....

    Oh yeah...

On a hot summer night on the beach in Grand Bend Ontario, Summer Nights cranked on the stereo, had a pretty wild night with the girlfriend "...out untill the mornin' light"
Still send shivers down my back!

"In the heat of the summer, well let's talk about love on a hot summer night, Hey"
