Guys, I don't have a link, and I can't cut and paste with this browser, but there was an interview with both guys, done separately by phone, in the Star Ledger in NJ. You can find it on nj.com/entertainment/ledger, do the 14 day archive at the bottom, and look under August 9.

To paraphrase, Sammy reiterated the story about Kid Rock trying to get DAve out on the stage with Sam, that Dave kept backing out.

Sam also said Dave was the best frontman of the 80's, but that he's stuck there now, he basically said Dave's a nostalgia act like Sha Na Na (LOL at that one).

The interesting part is what he said about Ed. Said he'd like Ed to come down to Cabo, put away the guitars for a couple of days, and go fishing to get back to what Sammy said was the or one of the best friendships he's ever had. Then see what happens from there.

The rest matches in tone with what else has been said, by both guys. Nothing else too surprising, to my recollection.

What about the apology Sambo? He should just shut the fuck up already! Sambo is starting to feel the pressure!

Also, i thought he was satisfied with his solo career and didn't want to rejoin. Boy what a liar!

This is what I've been saying and I'm glad Sammy feels that way! I hope Ed can overlook past differences with Sammy and get back to that great friendship - they seemed like brothers at one point!

    Here it is:

It's too bad the Eagles titled their 1994 reunion tour "Hell Freezes Over." It would have been the perfect name for the current David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar double bill.

Ever since Hagar replaced Roth as the frontman of the immensely popular hard-rock band Van Halen in 1986, the two singers have rarely said a kind word about each other in public. By all accounts they don't like each other much, and they don't have much in common as artists. Roth is best known for his goofy antics; no rock star has ever played the role of a sex-crazed clown more outrageously. Hagar, who was kicked out of Van Halen a decade after he joined, has a more powerful voice but a less colorful personality.

    Information from Our Advertisers

In spite of all their differences, they will always be linked as the two singers who helped make Van Halen great. The most recent Van Halen vocalist, Gary Cherone, added virtually nothing to the legacy, so he doesn't count (currently Van Halen has neither a singer nor a record contract).

The tour is scheduled to come to Atlantic City on Saturday, as well as Camden on Aug. 17 and Holmdel, Aug. 20. It ends Sept. 1, though future legs are possible. The Van Halen brothers -- guitarist Eddie and drummer Alex -- have not yet commented on their ex-singers' alliance, but VH bassist Michael Anthony has shown support for Hagar by frequently making guest appearances during his old bandmate's sets.

Hagar and Roth are taking turns opening and closing the concerts with their own bands, and have not yet sung together. Appropriately enough for a tour where they are spending little time with each other (even though they present shows together on a nightly basis), they were interviewed for this article separately -- by phone, and on different days.

Roth was at a tour stop in Oklahoma City, while Hagar was on a mid-tour vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where he owns the Cabo Wabo Cantina nightclub. They both lived up to their onstage personas. Hagar was friendly, straightforward and brimming with confidence -- a fiftysomething frat boy. Roth was wired and full of crazy quips -- a carnival barker with a maniacal laugh and, sometimes, a surprisingly philosophical bent.

Here's what they had to say on a variety of topics:

On the competitive aspect of the tour

Roth: "I think one of the attractive elements to this whole procession is that there's a serious rivalry, and it's exactly the kind of mix-it-up that an audience needs to get right in the middle of. It demands the absolute best out of both of us. I hear Sam's sonorous tones tearing through the cinderblock wall with alarming frequency. I'd rather freaking die than have an off night."

Hagar: "Behind his back, my band and myself, we're making fun of him all the time. But it's kind of a friendly competition. I want to blow him off the stage every night, whether I'm opening or closing. When I finish, I want the world to go, 'This show is over!'"

On the possibility of a duet

Hagar: "That's why I wanted to do (the tour). He said, 'I'd never do it. I've never jammed with anybody in my life, and I'm uncomfortable with it, and I'm not going to start now.' I said, 'Okay, fine.' Then Kid Rock comes to Detroit and grabs me and says, 'Let's beat on Dave's dressing room door. We've got to have a meeting.' So Kid Rock is there telling us, 'You know, I came down to see this show, and I want to see you guys together. If you don't do it, you're burning the fans.' He gave us this long lecture, and it was quite funny, because we were drunk. So I'm going, 'Okay, we're all drunk now, but tomorrow night, Dave,' and Dave's going, 'Yeah, tomorrow night in Chicago, we'll do a duet.' So we worked out that we'll do 'You Really Got Me" (a Kinks song covered by Van Halen in the Roth era), because Dave was closing that night.

"The next day, I come down to the show a little early, so we can sit down and talk about it. Dave's manager goes, 'He can't do it. He had a tough night last night. You got him drunk, and now he's got a hangover, and his voice is tired, he's all hoarse, and he ain't gonna to do it.' I see him in the hall the next night and I go, 'Hey Dave, are you ready to do it yet?' 'I don't know, Sam, I don't know.' So I just said, 'Forget it.'"

Roth: "I'm not interested in jamming. I'm interested in fury and precision. I'm not into celebs kind of wandering around, (saying) 'Let's do a 12-bar blues in A.' I think if you want something unpredictable, and kind of topsy turvy, take a fistful of Valium and smoke Marlboros in bed."

    On each other

Hagar: "I admire (Roth) for what he did in Van Halen. He was a great '80s frontman, maybe the best. I think his shtick is so '80s now, it's a joke to me. As a musician, I can't respect his voice any more. But what he did back then was great. If he had stayed (in Van Halen), though, and they never did the Sammy era, they wouldn't have made it past the hair-band stage, because he was so that. And he still is.

"He dresses the same, he acts the same. He's just a little toned down, because he's older, and maybe not so energetic, But he's still trying to put on that same kind of show. He's still trying to act like it's 1984. As a musician, I'm going, 'How can he even do that?' but as entertainment it's fantastic. It's like going to see Sha Na Na."

Roth. "Any similarities between Sam's existence and mine would be pretty much coincidental. I think Sam comes from a whole different background, and a whole different approach to what he does, in terms of stagecraft, and in terms of what he does after the show. Sam throws a party, and I am the party!"

On what's going on with Eddie and Alex Van Halen

Roth: "I think the Van Halens are kind of rudderless right now. I understand, via People magazine, that Eddie is getting a divorce (from actress Valerie Bertinelli). That boy has suffered more than Elizabeth Taylor! While I'm an instigator and an antagonist, I'm not a bully. I don't think they're apt to defend themselves properly right now, so let's not beat up on them for another few months."

Hagar: "I was in that band long enough to know what they think about all this. They're not happy at all. This kind of makes them look bad, but it's not what I had in mind at all. I'm doing this because it's fun, and it's the next best thing to being a Van Halen reunion."

On the possibility of a reunion with the Van Halen brothers

Hagar: "Eddie needs to get down to Cabo with me, and hang out on the beach, fishing, for a a couple of days. Sitting around, just walking on the beach, being friends. Not even picking up any instruments for two or three days, and getting back to being, what I thought was one of my best friends I ever had in my life, and certainly my best musical friend. If we could get back to that, then we could make music."

Roth: "'Hope Springs Eternal' is more than the name of a stripper girlfriend in Albuquerque!"

On what happens after the current tour ends

Roth: "My life is a video -- why stop now? I just had a meeting with (record producer) Rick Rubin, and we're involved in a whole circle of phases in the middle of Hollywood right now. I'm the flavor of the week again! I've got more comeback than Travolta!"

Hagar: "There's a possibility this show could do well in Japan, and I would like to go back to Japan, because I haven't been there since I first left Van Halen. But I don't see us doing a world thing.

"Dave likes to call it the world tour, but there's not that much interest for it (overseas). Some people think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, and some people think it stinks. I'm right in the middle, going, 'There's a side to it that's really great, as long as Van Halen is not doing anything, and as long as they don't want to get together with Sam and Dave.' But the second we could do it that way, then it's (garbage). But hey, it's the second best thing. I don't mind coming in second in a race once in a while."

sammy hagar is fuckin classless - what a lowlife to say all that childish shit. if he really feels that way about roth he should keep it to himself. if he would have gone to my high school, he'd of had his ass kicked within 10 minutes of saying something like that. what the fuck is hagar's problem?

i never realized until i read that interview just how bitter he is about roth's era of vh. jealousy is one thing sammy, but get some help pal.

can you believe a 55 year-old, pot bellied bridge troll, wearing capri pants is gonna call david lee roth a 'joke'?

ok sammy, you're the king of cool. sammy hagar, YOU'RE the joke!!!

Thanks for posting that, dude. I wish I could cut and paste with this piece of shit compuserve browser.

Yup, Sam has a big mouth. But jealous? Then why would he say Dave was the best there was in the 80's? If I recall, Sam was performing in the 80's too. I'll reserve my comments about the accuracy of Sam's statements until I see them up here at the end of the month. But, I think Dave's called Sam a chick enough times in the past to give both of them ample justification to hammer on each other.

I thought it was very interesting that both did an about face on Ed and Al. Dave showed some class about laying off Ed, and Sam said some things I hadn't heard in a long time. He's talked about an apology, etc., but this is the first I can recall that he kind of said, hey - where'd my best friend go? He must have been pretty hurt in 1996.

Thanks for posting the article. It looks like Sam and Dave would like to get together with Ed and Al but communication isn't a one way street. Ed, call Dave!!!!

sammy speaks his mind on dave and he's an asshole, immature, etc.

dave calls ed eddie van heiniken. says he wants to do a porno with val on national radio. calls the vh bros howdy doody mountain...and it's ok because it's a joke?

ah...hypocricy at it's best. the american way!

Hagar is a punk ass bitch, it's true. First he said he's having such a successful solo career, he'd rather stick w/ it and not reunite w/ VH. Now he wants to rekindle his love affair w/ Ed. (I guess Ed's is fair game now.........) Also, just last week he said he'd never tour w/ Dave again, now he wants to go to Japan. The fact is, last time either one of these guys were inside an arena, they paid for a ticket like anyone else. That's cool, but to hear Hagar say that he doesn't need Dave, makes me think he's delusional. Sam makes Dave look humble, That's nearly impossible............ One cool thing is, Dave working w/ Rick Rubin. If anyone can light a fire under Dave's ass it's him. He's worked recently w/ Johnny Cash and Tom Petty w/ great results...... The man knows how to help artists revent themselves......... If Ed plays w/ Sam again, he should never have ditched Cherone...........

What the hell did Sammy say that was so sacreligious? That Dave is stuck in the eighties? That he feels competitive with Dave on this tour? That maybe he misses making music and being friends with Eddie? I'd be concerned if he didn't say those things. Also, what does Sammy have to call and apologize to Eddie for? The post that says if Eddie calls Sammy he shouldn't have gotten rid of Cherone really cracks me up.How can you compare Cherone to Hagar? Sammy wins hands down in two crucial areas--arranging Eddie's riffs into cohesive song structures and writing lyrics.Sammy has written some dumb lyrics in his time but I've never heard him sing about the "boogeyman giving him the creeps"
    The song ain't dirty

It would be kool to see if Rubin "actually" does work with Dave, and if Rick Rubin really does have an interest in working on an album with DLR.
