After reading the reviews of the S&D shows, it is interesting to note the comments about Vic Johnson doing his own take on VH songs versus Brian Young playing them note for note. A lot of people were miffed by Vic's loose take on the VH songs. I find this interesting because of all the cover songs I've seen VH do, Eddie NEVER played them like the original. I've never heard anyone say "Ah man, Eddie didn't play "Rock -n- Roll" anything like the way Jimmy Page did." In fact, I don't think he ever played his own songs note for note. He usually played them close to the original, but he didn't have a problem with slightly altering the riff to "Panama", mixing up solos a little bit....

Interesting......

I thinks it's asumed that Ed knows how to play the "tunes" correctly, he just likes to be "Ed"

On the other hand, Sam's guitar player, may not really know how the song is played exactly, so he just gets it close.

Don't know if this is the case or not.....but after listening to some of the Hagar Mp3's available on this site.......I think he's an excellent player....but to be able to play rhythm and lead at the same time like Ed does.....may be a little much for him.

When Ed does a "cover" it gets "VanHalenized".....when others do a cover of Van Halen......you better nail every fuck note.........
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

I agree with those points. That's the way I see it too.

Well, I do see both sides of the coin on this one. I don't mind artists doing something a little different when they play a tune, in fact I welcome it. However, I think on this tour, the guitarists are going to be judged on how accurately they play Ed's stuff. Obviously Brian has the edge on the songs he's playing, because he has been doing them every weekend for the past 3 years. Also, Dave is really paying tribute to those songs, because they are as classic as any tunes around, and I think Brian is keeping it note for note because of this. Even Ed tries to keep it his solos along the same lines without straying too much, because people will go..."what the hell is he doing?" if he strays too much off from the record. Van Halen has never had the luxury that say a band like Led Zeppelin had in being able to totally change songs around. Ed has changed stuff up a little in concert, but never has he drastically changed one of his solos.

I still would go for the "note-for-note" way in concert other than the spotlight solos (obviously). I personally would love to hear Ed play his own stuff "note-for-note" in concert while doing songs. JMO...

Vic may not play note-for-note, but he still rips it up.

Vic needs to be more comfy on stage...he's been with Sammy long enough to know the VH songs so I do not understand why he leans over his guitar and looks like a beginner guitarist during some solos...I think anyone who has been to the DLR/Sammy show will have noticed....I remember Vic really looking like he is struggling during Runaround and DLR's "Eddie clone" always hitting and playing the right notes. Just my opinion
Just go for it!
