Unfortunately, Van Halen's entire interest has been down. Ten years ago, a Sammy/Dave tour would have swept, but now, though doing a little better than VH3's, they still aren't lighting up the sky. Seems like we'll never see sold out stadiums, even with all members in the band.

Do you have any number from the beginning of the tour? All the shows you listed were from July and August. I think it might be interesting to see if their were any sellouts or fuller capacity earlier in the tour.

The only way you're going to see Van Halen members in a sold-out stadium or arena right now is if they happen to be sitting next to you during the upcoming springsteen or stones tours...

I'm not an unrealistic optimist, but I believe this: Van Halen reuniting with either Dave or Sam or both (Dave being the stronger draw) would have been a sellout tour. Van Halen, according to my humble opinion, record sales and classic rock station playlists, are within the "legacy" group of bands that can still draw - AC DC, Aerosmith, Plant Page, The Who, etc. I know that AC DC and Aerosmith all draw HUGE crowds when they tour. Now, Aerosmith, mind you, has catered to the younger generations over the last 10 years and they get the "Cryin'" crowd as well as the "Back in the Saddle" crowd - but AC DC hasn't had a good album in quite a while and they pack 'em in. If Van Halen had pulled Dave back in right after VH-3, it would have worked. It STILL might work, but interest will indeed wane as each year goes by. I also agree that the Sam & Dave tour probably hurts the VH legacy more than it helps - but this is probably all we're gonna get.

Nissan Pavillion holds much more then 10,000. Probably 18,000-20,000. Are there any numbers for the 1st leg when they were doing arenas?

The reason the Nissan Pavilion capacity number is off is this: Promoters will work their business/profitablity plans based on total number of seats they think they can fill. If a promoter puts together a show based on 10,000 people total to hit the profitablity numbers, then that is what is reported as capacity. So, in this case, if 10,000 was the number, but the venue holds 20,000, then 10,000 is still reported as the capacity for that show.

The best example of this is a BIG arena, such as the Alamodome is San Antonio. Capacity for the entire stadium is 65,000. But it will be configured and forecasted based on the particular show. If the show is Paul McCartney - the capacity and seating arrangments will be set at 50,000. For someone like Incubus, it might be configured to 10,000.

Both of these bands released new material in 2001 (three years AFTER the release of VH3).

    VCooper,

Good work. I figured that the Sam and Dave Tour was doing a little better than the 3 Tour. VCooper wasn't the total gross for the 3 Tour $11 million?

The $11 million gross for the 3 tour sounds about right. A few years ago, I was able to find roughly 75% of the stats for the 3 tour, and it added up to a little over $8 million. I sent an email to amusementbusiness.com to see if I could obtain all concert data for VH. AB has changed their site within the last year or so. I used to be able to pull up stats for he Monsters of Rock, Balance tour, etc... I'm still looking for the stats for the first 8 shows for the 3 tour. I recall that all the venues were at least 85% percent capacity, before the new singer effect with Cherone wore off, and the later shows didn't fare as well, with a few exceptions.

vcooper - thanks for the data.

I wonder if the 3 Tour would have been as bad if the album weren't so dismal.

Van Halen III drew over 18,800 at Madison Square Garden on May 22, 1998. Creed opened up for them. The maximum capacity was 20,000. I can't answer for the second leg of the tour, but I can tell you that drawing that many fans at MSG for a third incarnation of a band, is still not too bad.

By the way? I thought it was one of the best live performances for Van Halen EVER! I had seen them with Dave and Sammy too and this tour ranked with any of them as far as the set list and live show.
