Don't know if this has been posted here yet, but here is something cut an' pasted from vh@yahoogroups:

Here is an interview with Sammy I just ran across on the Knight-Ridder
wire. I'm on digest version, so I apologize in advance if somebody has
already posted this. It does have some interesting information that I have
not seen anywhere before regarding details of reneging on things, etc.

Anyway, here is the article.

"Sam & Dave" tour full of conflicts between Hagar, Roth.

By Alan K. Stout
Knight Ridder Newspapers
(KRT)

Sammy Hagar is trying. He really is.

He is trying to get along with David Lee Roth. He is trying to be gracious,
and he is trying to keep the best interest of his fans at heart.

Sometimes, though (well, OK, quite often), during the course of an
interview, the hard reality slips out: Hagar does not like Roth. At all.

And that's just one of the things that make this summer's "Sam & Dave" tour
such a fun musical event. The two former Van Halen singers, who have never
had many kind words for each other, are sharing the same bill and tearing
up the concert trail. And by the end of the road jaunt, it wouldn't be too
surprising if they tear each other up as well.

The seed for the unusual tour, Hagar says, was planted a few years ago when
he received a big-money offer from Las Vegas for a full Van Halen reunion
show that would include himself, Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer
Alex Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony. The Van Halen brothers, he
said, nixed the idea, saying they would never work with Roth again. Roth,
Hagar says, later approached him about putting together the next best
thing: a "Sam & Dave" tour.

After a few meetings, Hagar agreed.

Now, several weeks into the tour, Hagar has come to know the man he once
replaced and the man he never actually worked with. And he doesn't always
like what he sees.

"He wants to be the only shining object up on the stage," Hagar says. "He
likes shiny 'with the white hair and the lame' suits. But if you take the
little (accent) off the end of the 'e', it says l-a-m-e.

"He's really into that, and I'm not going to take that away from him. I
said 'Hey, you do it your way, and I'll do it my way.' "

While Roth led Van Halen from 1978 through 1985 with a larger-than-life,
cartoonish persona, Hagar offered a more man-on-the-street approach during
his 1986-1996 stint with the band. He says when it came time to negotiate
the "Sam & Dave" tour, he insisted that rather than simply letting the
agents and lawyers work out the logistics, he wanted to meet with Roth in
person.

"His manager said, 'Here's what Dave proposes ... He'd like it to be this
way and that way ...' And I said, 'No. Dave's going to sit in a room with
me, and I'm going to look him in the eye and hang with him for at least two
hours before I even say that I'm interested.' It was a little bit of an
uncomfortable meeting at first, but about an hour into it, we loosened up a
little bit, and we actually got on pretty good."

Still, Hagar says Roth soon reneged on some things agreed upon in the
meeting, and certain aspects of the tour had to be renegotiated. Roth, he
says, has not been humbled by the fact that Van Halen continued to be a
successful act without him and his own solo career fizzled shortly after he
left the band.

"This is why I truthfully do not like this guy," Hagar says. "He acts like
he's the (expletive) guy and I'm just a piece of (expletive). He's
demanding to close shows and all this stuff. I want to slap this guy back
down. Before, I was like 'Dave's a good guy, and he deserves to be in the
light,' but we got out there, and he's acting like he's a god and I'm the
(expletive) opening act."

"I'm just scratching my head going 'This guy's nuts.' He doesn't get it.
I'm telling you straight up: He is in denial. He doesn't believe that my
era in Van Halen was successful. We sold 42 million records."

Another part of Roth's denial, Hagar says, is the passage of time.

"He walks out there like it's 19-(expletive)-84," he says. "He kind of
limps out, but I'm telling you, he actually acts like Eddie, Alex and
Michael are up there with him. It's great for a person that never got to
see them or a person that really misses that. Go see it. It's there for
you, man: a relic, right out of the past."

Hagar confirmed the rumor that it was Roth who nixed the idea of doing an
encore together, even though it would have been a fun concert moment for
the fans.

"He killed that," Hagar says. "He said, 'I've never sang with another
singer or stood on stage with another singer, and I'm not going to do it
now.' And every night on this tour, I've went and knocked on his
dressing-room door, and if he didn't answer the door, I'd say to his
manager, 'Tell Dave if he wants to do it tonight, come out.' Every single
night, I've put the word in, sometimes right to Dave's face. I'd say, 'Hey
Dave, you want to come out during my closing set?,' or 'Do you want me to
come out at the end of your set?'"

At one show, Hagar says, a rather famous fan, Kid Rock, lobbied hard for a
jam.

"Ted Nugent came out and did 'Wild Thing' with me, and Dave was standing on
the side of the stage with this big grin on his face, and then he
disappeared," Hagar says. "After I came off stage, Kid Rock grabs me and
says 'Come on, we're going to go talk to (expletive) Roth right now. This
is (expletive) up.' Kid's all ticked off, and we go into Dave's dressing
room, and for once, Dave and I are having a good time and Kid's
standing there saying 'You guys sit down. I'm a fan. I'm disappointed.'

"I'm sitting there, and I say 'Well first of all, you're too (expletive)
young to be telling us what to do, but you're right.' And Dave said 'OK.
tomorrow night.?"

The next day, Hagar says, Roth backed out.

Hagar still speaks somewhat respectfully of Eddie and Alex Van Halen and
remains close friends with Michael Anthony, who has even played bass with
him at some shows. He says a reunion of the four, plus Roth, would be the
ultimate experience for Van Halen fans and adds that despite the occasional
frustrations, he is having a good time on the "Sam & Dave" tour. He's
playing music from all eras of his career, solo and Van Halen, and says
the rivalry he feels with Roth actually serves fans well because both are
always out to outdo one another.

"I'm digging the hell out of this tour for what it is," Hagar says. "I've
got an hour and a half to show that I'm the king of the world, and I am up
for the challenge."

So Dave doesn't want to do an encore jam? So what? He's not into that kind of thing, he's never done it before, and I guess he still doesn't care to do that. Dave has never really been about jamming. Oh well...

Dave appears to me that he is afraid that if he sings with Sammy, that his lack of vocal range will show. He would be correct in saying that.

If Dave is uncomfortable sharing the stage with anybody fine. He will soon be back in the night clubs anyways.

Thats one thing I can say for Sammy, he will jam with just about anybody. For someone who is supposed to have a big ego, thats pretty cool.

You're right...it sounds like Dave's an asshole, which is amazing....this is the first person we've ever heard this from???

I think the problem is he probably couldn't jump onstage and sing any unrehearsed tune unlike Sammy, so he probably is better off sitting on the side of the stage with his JD!

Thanks for posting the article, it was good to read. I wish Dave would go and sing with Sam for a song but I respect his wishes.

Hey DLR'sCock, would you be pissed at Sammy if HE didn't want to do a song with Dave? I'm not picking a fight, just interested in the answer.

Sam needs to quit bitching and moaning about Dave, and just shut the fuck up and play, Sam giving fashion advice? Looks like he stole Koko the clowns yellow outfit to me, oh yeah he was just styling in the "55" video wasn't he? What about the suit he stole from Huey Lewis in the When its Love Video? HAHAHA!

remember that saying "be careful what you ask for"? well, i'm not sure i want to see a couple of guys who truly don't get along doing some fake "hug" on stage for the fans - it would be so false that it would be painful. that same applies for a full VH reunion - i'd have to bite my tongue pretty hard to get by the falsehood - even if roth's voice could handle singing with sammy, what song would you exactly want them to sing???

maybe it's best not mixing the oil & water and just enjoy each by itself.............

I really don't think that Sam is bitching the way some of you claim he is.

It is a well-known fact that Dave has been sued for not going through with either paying or playing. Sammy has experienced this first hand for himself.

I really believe that if Sammy were to tell all, there would be some things that would really disappoint some die hard Roth Fans.

If Dave had no intentions of going out there when he agreed to do it, he should have just said NO in the first place and kept his mouth shut.

There is a reason why Dave isn't saying anything and I believe it has nothing to do with class. I think Sammy knows much more about Roth that would destroy Dave credibility even more, but Sammy won't say.
What is understood, need not be discussed.

Quote from Sammy about Dave:
--------------
"He likes shiny 'with the white hair and the lame' suits. But if you take the
little (accent) off the end of the 'e', it says l-a-m-e.
-----------------

Funny, when I read this the first thing that popped into my head was, "l-a-m-e is marketing shampoo, conditioner, slippers, and incense with your name on it, Sam."

------------------------

Another quote from Sammy about Dave:

-------
"He's really into that, and I'm not going to take that away from him. I said 'Hey, you do it your way, and I'll do it my way.' "

-------

For Sammy, "my way" means shamelessly copying Jimmy Buffett's business model of getting people to buy into the "lifestyle" of your music -- right down to the Hawaiian shirts and product tie-ins -- and gouging them for the privilege. "My way," indeed.

I wish that Sammy would shut up until the tour is over!

I agree that Dave is a suck for not going on stage with him. But I payed a lot of money for tickets to see him and Dave, and if he keeps this up the tour will be over with Dave very shortly!

Why is he saying these things right now in the middle of the tour?????!!! To hype the tour?

Sweet William: While I admit that Sam is obviously cloning a model that works, are you so naive as to think that that's not what this whole business is about? What is Dave doing if not cloning that which made him a success in the eighties with a tribute band as backup. Come on, man. Don't get me wrong, some of Sam's commercialism gets old and, in my opinion, in the way of what really matters--the music. But, at least he has something to promote. Dave has not come close to doing what Sam has a solo artist/business man and I think a lot of rotbots hate him for it because they wish their guy had half the sense to do the same things.

Why do people keep saying that Dave hasnt come close to Sam as a solo artist? Didnt EEAS and Skyscraper sell close to 3 million copies apiece. Also, ALAE is a great album and so is DLR band. I havent had a chance to listen to YFLM. I think the only reason that people say that Sammy's solo career is so succesful that instead of putting out a couple of good albums, he cranks out a shitty album every year. Just cause someone puts out more solo albums doesnt mean that he is a better solo artist. Personally I like Daves solo stuff alot, and I like Sammy's, wait, I dont like Sammy's. but thats just one mans opinion.
Lets Hope VH gets some Sensible Shoes that lead them back to Dave.
