I was doing a litle surfing, and found a way to keep most of those annoying pop-ups away for good, and it doesn't require a download of any kind.

Timothy Kujawski is credited with finding this, I'm just spreading the word. It's really pretty easy.

1. Right-click anywhere on your desktop, and create a new shortcut by going to New>Shortcut.

2. It will ask you for a location, cut and paste this into the field:

%windir%\SYSTEM32\notepad.exe %windir%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\hosts

3. If it asks you which program you would like to view the file with, select notepad.

4. open the shortcut.

5. In notepad you will see a file that looks like the one below. This is known as your hosts file. Whenever your computer makes a DNS lookup, it will search through this file first, essentially mapping the hostname in question to a specified IP:

-----------------------------------------------
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
-----------------------------------------------

6. Now the cool part. Whenever you're browsing and a new ad or pop up comes up, right click on it and copy the URL into your "hosts" file.

- Type 127.0.0.2
- Chop off the "http://" bit as well as the directory and filename
- you should end up something that looks like this:

127.0.0.2 sbad.foxsports.lycos.com
127.0.0.2 www.celebritywonder.com
127.0.0.2 doubleclick.com
127.0.0.2 ads.x10.com
-----------------------------------------------

Of particular interest to you VH Linkers, will be the following line:

127.0.0.2 static.everyone.net

There are a few pop-ups that keep coming up, but the websites themselves don't load, just the windows come up. I haven't quite figured out how to get rid of them. You will be happy to know, though, that the popups here at VHLinks do not come back once you've added them to your host list. If the banner addresses ever change and they come back, just add the new address to your list.

NOTE: for this to work, you must NOT be using the autoconfigure option in IE lan settings.

There are starting to be some very smart popup killers coming out; they're smart in that they kill popups but at the same time allow legitimate new windows.

Very cool advice; hosts files rock.

Well seeing how people really aren't willing to deal with a TINY inconvenience of a pop-UNDER once a day to pay for $400 worth of hosting, maybe I'll just shut the site down. Or maybe I'll just charging everyone every month to access the site, like many boards this size do.

I realize that most of you really don't care of understand how the whole hosting thing works, but believe me a site this size is not usually funded by a sole individual, which in this case is me. Sarge doesn't pay for his server (at least he didn't back when I talked to him), neither does Brad, and to keep this board running I need to offset the HUGE costs to run it.

If it takes a freaking pop-UNDER ad to make some money so that you guys can enjoy a free site, I think the least you can do is accept the MINOR inconvenience.

All I'm hearing is bitching and moaning, and you know what, the site will go before it puts me in hock, believe me. At this point, I'd surely like to get $400 off my credit card every month, and with a band that is doing nothing, it's starting to make a lot of sense. Especially when people bitch about things that are obviously designed to help fund a site that doesn't cost $10 a month!

It's probably a good thing you edited that before I had a chance to read it.

Calm down, Brett. I for one completely understand how expensive hosting costs are. The only thing I personally complained about was pop-ups on every page. If they were only once a day like you claimed, it wouldn't have been so bad. I still think you should set up a volunteer payment system like Paypal to help combat the costs. Just imagine a hundred people donating a few dollars a piece a month....

You're probably using a different OS (Win 95 or 98).

Scott, the thing that you were getting is something I DIDN'T sign up for and that was banner spawning pop ups, which was completely annoying. I went nuts at the ad serving people for putting that garbage on my site and they removed them. The pop unders that show up once every 24 hours is something I did want and does generate some revenue.

I'm calm, just seems like everyone is trying to figure out ways to subvert the pop-unders. I mean I have no control over that, that's your own business, but I don't know just rubs me funny when it's broadcasted on the board how to do it. I mean, once a day pop unders on one page shouldn't be a big deal. I hate pop under crap too but I really am not bombarding you guys with that crap, it's just once a day. The banners that were creating pop ups was the major problem and I hope they are gone from here forever.

I'm sure I'm being over-sensitive to it, but just my take.

I don't want any handouts, but sure if people want to give to the site, have it at, obviously it will be appreciated! I use PayPal for all my E-bay stuff so send to webmaster@vhlinks.com.

Ahhhh, true, good point Brett.

Dang, makes me want to figure out a way for popunders to show for a brief time so a site can get their impression, and then have it automatically close. Certainly there HAS to be a way...

My main box runs Win 2000.

For you, Notepad should be in the C:/WINDOWS directory for 98.
