Robert Plant, in Zeppelin and with Robbie Blunt later on.
"There's a Japanese term called wabi-sabi, not wasabi, but wabi-sabi. It means an appreciation for the imperfect, the less than precision. The cowboy boots that you never polish because it's bad luck. That is completely wabi-sabi. Van Halen is that." - DLR 2002<br /><br />"Look! I can see their parachutes! Van Halen with Roth and Hagar
    Waters & Gilmour
    Jagger & Richards
    Townshend
    Springsteen
    Neil Young
    Sting
    Tom Petty
    Mellencamp
    Becker & Fagen (Steely Dan)

Cool to see Gerry Rafferty get a mention. I'm not familiar with all of his material but love "Right Down the Line."
"With me in the band, it's one of those miraculous 97-97 deals. It's 97 percent you and 97 percent moi. Is it Mick or Keith? I don't know" -DLR

"We eventually started playing clubs, and we also did weddings. We played everything from the Ohio Players to K.C. & the Sunshine Band. You would love the sight of Van Halen doing 'Get Down Tonight'! But by the third set when everybody was good and tanked up--boy, we'd be blazin'!" -Michael Anthony

Of course VH tops my list, some of my other influences are, in no certain order:

    Rush
    Billy Joel
    Neil Young
    The Police
    Crosby Stills & Nash
    Satch

Sort of an odd mix I know but I really enjoy good, versitile songwriters. I also like downloading old AM gold stuff from the 70's, please don't kick my ass I can't help it, it brings back memories from my childhood

Geez man..good list, there are a lot of people I listen to there! I wouldn't be surprised if we have the same record collection!

Anyway, yes - Rafferty is hot. He really likes the Hammond organ & his arranging skills are top notch. I have a beautiful BEST OF by him.

I agree with you about Paul Simon!

I have been meaning to go down to Yonge street at the Masonic Temple - the stones are practicing there. According to the site STONESDOUG you can hear them from the street. I saw them live in '89 and spent mot of my childhood listening to their greatest hits...

Yeah - Robbie Blunt used that out-of-phase strat sound on a few of the Plant tunes. I really liked that.

Yesterday I downloaded Page and Plant doing Stairway accoustically on a Japanese TV program in 94. Even though I thought they would never do it again the truth is out there!

I like most of the ones mentioned above.

It surprises me that no one has metioned James Taylor. I'd definately put him in the top 5 popular song writers of all time. He's in the same league as Paul Simon and Jim Croce IMO.
