    I just got an email from someone about the tragedy. Since it affects the U.S. primarily...and some may not appreciate the
    post....I thought I'd ask if you want me to post it or not....

    Well, if it defaces the military in any way, I could do without it right now. I'm ex Navy myself. But hey, whatever. Your a good judge of things Angel.

    I just got an e-mail from a good friend of mine who flys SH-60B's off the US=
    S=20
    Hawes. I thought you might like to read it.=20

    "It wasn't until a few days ago though, that we started doing

    something that I feel may be the first thing I've seen in my short Naval=20
    career that has truly made a difference. Right now we're supporting the USS=20
    COLE and her crew in Aden. When the attack occurred we were a day away. Just=
    =20
    by luck we happened to be on our way out of the Gulf and headed towards the=20
    Suez and could get here in a relatively short amount of time. I know what yo=
    u=20
    all have seen on CNN, because we have seen it too. I just want you all to=20
    know that what you see doesn't even scratch the surface. I'm not going to ge=
    t=20
    into it for obvious reasons. But I will tell you that right now there are=20
    250+ sailors just a few miles away living in hell on Earth. I'm sitting in a=
    =20
    nice air conditioned state room, they're sleeping out on the decks at night.=
    =20
    You can't even imagine the conditions they're living in, and yet they are=20
    still fighting 24 hours a day to save their ship and free the bodies of thos=
    e=20
    still trapped and send them home. As bad as it is, they're doing an=20
    incredible job. The very fact that these people are still functioning is=20
    beyond my comprehension. Whatever you imagine as the worst, multiply it by=20
    ten and you might get there. Today I was tasked to photo rig the ship and=20
    surrounding area. It looked so much worse than I had imagined, unbelievable=20
    really, with debris and disarray everywhere, the ship listing, the hole in=20
    her side. I wish I had the power to relay to you all what I have seen, but=20
    words just won't do it. I do want to tell you the first thing that jumped ou=
    t=20
    at me - the Stars and Stripes flying. I can't tell you how that made me=20
    feel...even in this God forsaken hell hole our flag was more beautiful than=20
    words can describe. Then I started to notice the mass of activity going on=20
    below, scores of people working non-stop in 90 plus degree weather to save=20
    this ship. They're doing it with almost no electrical power and they're=20
    sleeping (when they can sleep) outside on the decks because they can't stand=
    =20
    the smell or the heat or the darkness inside. They only want to eat what we=20
    bring them because they're all scared of eating something brought by the=20
    local vendors. Even with all that, the USS COLE and her crew is sending a=20
    message guys, and it's that even acts of cowardice and hate can do nothing t=
    o=20
    the spirit and pride of the United States. I have never been so proud of wha=
    t=20
    I do, or of the men and women that I serve with as I was today. There are=20
    sixteen confirmed dead sailors who put it on the line for all of us, and som=
    e=20
    of them are still trapped here. Please take a minute to pray for their=20
    families and say a word of thanks for their sacrifice - one made so that we=20
    can live the lives that we do. All of you that serve with me, thank you. All=
    =20
    of you that have loved ones that serve, thank you."

    Please feel free to pass this on to those you think will appreciate it.

    Thanks - this puts a personal touch on what you hear on the news. As a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, having spent hundreds of hours doing mass casualty drills, mass conflagration drills, battle damage/casualty drills, and other various drills and exercises, I think I can maybe get a tiny taste of what they are going through. Noone, however, will know truly what it was like unless they were part of that crew and were actually there. I get a feeling of pride in what they are doing, knowing they are not doing it for their ship or their country(although thats part of it), but mainly doing it for their buddy right beside them. We do owe people like this a debt of gratitude. I'm finished babbling now. Excellent post, ANGEL4U.

    I second the Chief's remarks. To everyone that has publicy or silently prayed for my fellow shipmates, thank you. Your sentiments do not go unappreciated.
