The X-Files Ends After 9 Seasons
    Thursday, January 17, 2002 12:56 CST

After nine seasons and 201 episodes, Chris Carter's "The X-Files" is coming to an end. On Wednesday, Carter decided it was time to call it a wrap at the end of the season in May.

"I look at it as the ninth-inning situation," Carter told The Hollywood Reporter, "I'd rather go out now and celebrate rather than have to make an announcement in the summer."

"X-Files" faced stiff competition in the Sunday 9 p.m. slot and lost some of its traction with fans in its first season without original series star David Duchovny.

"I want to be able to wrap things up for the fans who have been there from the beginning and throughout," Carter adds. "My determination was to go out with a series of very, very strong episodes that are going to pull a lot of threads together from the last nine years."

Garfield Heading to the Big Screen
    Thursday, January 17, 2002 12:52 CST

Garfield, his dull-witted canine cohort Odie and their perpetually single owner Jon Arbuckle are making their way to the big screen as a live-action/CGI feature, says The Hollywood Reporter. 20th Century Fox has optioned feature rights to "Garfield," the long-running comic strip that John Davis will produce through his Davis Entertainment.

"Toy Story" scribes Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow will write the script, which will focus on the sibling rivalry between Garfield and Odie. The feature will be live action, with a computer-generated Garfield.

    Britney Upset With Justin
In an interview with Cosmo, Britney Spears says she was "devastated" when she saw Justin Timberlake make out with another girl in *NSYNC's "Gone" video. "You could have just taken a knife and stabbed me," she says. Umm, just one thing, Britney: Remember that "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" video where you're makin' out and rolling around with some other guy? Has Justin seen that clip? Apparently, the pop princess was so upset when she saw the "Gone" video that she stormed into a bathroom and didn't speak to anyone for a while. Eventually, the two talked it over and decided that the best solution was for her not to watch videos that upset her.

Adam Ant, the eccentric new wave singer behind such '80s pop hits as "Goody Two Shoes" and "Stand and Deliver," has been committed to a London psychiatric hospital after a bizarre bar row.

Ant (born Stuart Goddard) was taken into custody Saturday night at the Prince of Wales pub in North London after getting into a fight and allegedly brandishing a fake gun. He was charged with possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence as well as criminal damage and one charge of committing actual bodily harm on a man in his forties, according to a police statement.

The next day, police said, officials received calls from several of Ant's close friends and members of his family who said they feared for the 47-year-old singer's safety. The cops then picked up Ant in the Camden Town area of North London, near his home in Primrose Hill.

The singer, who suffers from manic depression, was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken "involuntarily, but not necessarily against his will" to London's Royal Free Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said. Under the law, Ant can be detained for up to 28 days. Within his first 14 days at the facility he may file an appeal to be released.

A statement on Ant's Web site said the singer "is not suicidal, however family and friends are concerned that Adam [was] not receiving the care that he requires, and they do not wish to see him become a potential threat to himself."

Ant is still scheduled to embark on his "Here and Now" tour with members of Spandau Ballet in April.

Variety reports that Russell Crowe is negotiating to star in 20th Century Fox's "Master and Commander," the Peter Weir-directed adaptation of the Patrick O'Brian book series.

Crowe would play Royal Navy Capt. Jack Aubrey, who is given his first command of a British sailing vessel sent to battle.

Fox is aiming to shoot the film at Fox Studios Baja, the Mexico studio with the gigantic water tank built to house James Cameron's "Titanic."

    What's Next for Ron Howard?
    Thursday, January 17, 2002 6:36 CST

According to syndicated columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith, "A Beautiful Mind" director Ron Howard hasn't decided what he'll take on for his next directorial endeavor, but he says it well might be "The Alamo," which is going though a rewrite by John Sayles.

There's also a possibility that he'll make "The Burial," which is about Mississippi black personal-injury lawyer Willie Gary, who took on the case of the owner of a local funeral home chain who claimed he had been swindled by a major funeral parlor conglomerate. "And then there are a couple of other pictures I might do. I haven't decided yet what will be first."

Also in active development at his and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment is "Curious George," which will be made as a computer-generated movie, the Hugh Hefner biopic and "The Cat in the Hat," which Ron expects to roll this year. No decision has yet been made on casting.

ATLANTA — When Creed last toured in the fall of 2000, the Tallahassee, Florida, group was well on its way to becoming the biggest band in America. Now, with the success of Weathered cementing their status on the rock and roll acropolis, it would seem to be ideal time for them to rest on their laurels and coast.

At the opening of the band's 2002 tour on Wednesday night, however, the core Creed trio of frontman Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti and drummer Scott Phillips seemed to be aware of how crucial this outing truly is. Would they falter, or, — as their own song goes — could they take it even higher?

Judging by their 19-song, almost two-hour set, they could.

Taking to the stage as blue and purple lights circled their gear — and without a word — Creed immediately ripped through the lead track off Weathered, "Bullets," as a series of (seemingly Metallica-inspired) pyrotechnic explosions and swirling firecrackers helped punctuate Tremonti's double-barrelled riffs.

Decked out in a striped gold and gray shirt and black leather pants, Stapp perched himself on a platform behind the drum riser for the opening lyrics to "Freedom Fighter," a coarse rocker whose quasi-religious sentiment has picked up added depth with the current war on terrorism. While Creed is certainly no Rage Against the Machine, there was something noticeably combative and surprisingly dark in their reading of the song, particularly as Stapp leaned into the chorus: "I'm just a freedom fighter/ No remorse/ Raging on in holy war/ Soon there'll come a day/ When you're face to face with me."

Following the song, Stapp made his first comments to the crowd, acknowledging the tour's kickoff on Southern soil. "It's good to be back on tour, and it's nice to start things off here," Stapp said as the band dipped into 1999's Human Clay for a fervid reading of "What If."

As much attention as Stapp commands during Creed's live show, the singer was not to be outdone by the imposing figure of guitarist Tremonti, whose muscle T-shirt and black jeans made him a dead ringer for either Henry Rollins or James Hetfield's younger brother. His resemblance to hard rock vets aside, Tremonti's playing style seemed more akin to that of U2's the Edge circa the Rattle & Hum tour, as the Creed axeman effortlessly tossed out sheets of guitar and layers of riffs that sounded as if they'd require two or three different players to replicate.

Tremonti was particularly impressive on several of the newer tunes, including "Signs" and "Who's Got My Back?," the latter of which Creed turned into an epic, 10-minute tour de force that managed to evoke stadium bands such as post-Roger Waters Pink Floyd and even Slash-era Guns N' Roses.

Creed concentrated much of the evening's set list on newer material, playing 10 of Weathered's 11 tracks (the sole omission being the album's closer, "Lullaby"). But when you've scored as many hit singles as Creed has, it becomes very easy to drop in the crowd-pleasers to make the mix more listener-friendly. The band was more than happy to oblige, rolling out four selections from their 1997 debut, My Own Prison, and five tunes total from Human Clay.

After telling the crowd, "We need to get it loud in here. We need to hear you," Stapp and Tremonti scorched through a trio of older tunes — "My Own Prison," "Say I" and "Torn" — before Stapp took up a guitar to strum a few chords on another key Weathered song, "Stand Here With Me," which the singer dedicated to the fans and said was "written about all the people who've been with us from the beginning." But the real highlight of Stapp's brief guitar work was that it provided Tremonti the freedom to pull back from his drilling rhythm work to lay down a crystalline guitar lead that got lighters lifted into the air.

Despite the presence of several vintage Creed tracks during the show, the band admitted that it almost chose to sidestep one of its most popular songs, as Stapp introduced "With Arms Wide Open" by explaining, "We didn't know if we were going to play this one tonight, 'cause we figured everyone's heard this [enough]. But then again, we'd hear about it if we didn't [do it]."

Creed avoided such missteps and miscalculations during the concert, even if it was obvious they were still working on certain aspects of the showmanship — particularly with the coordination of several Kiss-like pyrotechnic displays. The only noticeable gaffe of the evening came at the close of the regular set, when a flash pot located behind the stage caught fire during an over-the-top round of sparklers, explosions and fireworks that gave "What's This Life For" an ending as cacophonous as the 1812 Overture.

After stagehands broke out the fire extinguisher to douse the smoldering gear, Creed returned to the stage and Stapp praised the crowd for helping them through the first-night jitters.

"Thank you so much," Stapp told the audience. "We were so nervous after this past year, but this has been great." Creed wrapped the evening via the triple combination of "Don't Stop Dancing," "Higher" and "My Sacrifice," with Stapp prefacing the final two songs by prompting his guitarist, "Well, let's take it, Tremonti. Let's do it."

While only time will tell if Creed are capable of maintaining their pitched level of energy and verve over the next several tours (and years), the Atlanta crowd left confident that they had seen a band that had hit its live stride.

"It's always great to see the first show of a big tour like this," noted Danny Copeland, 23, of Augusta, Georgia. "It may not be the best show in terms of the playing, but it's usually the most spontaneous, and that makes it one of the most truthful."

A pair of rather perfunctory opening sets from Virgos (the band fronted by Creed's current bassist, Brett Hestla, who is pulling double-duty on the tour) and Tantric failed to get much of a rise from the sold-out Philips Arena crowd. While the audience cheered for a pair of Tantric's familiar singles, "Breakdown" and "Mourning," the Louisville, Kentucky, group's 45-minute set was undercut by a muddy sound mix that distorted much of the rhythm guitar and bass into a single dull thud.

The set list for the opening night of Creed's 2002 Weathered tour:

    "Bullets"
    "Freedom Fighter"
    "What If"
    "Signs"
    "My Own Prison"
    "Say I"
    "Torn"
    "Who's Got My Back?"
    "One Last Breath"
    "Faceless Man"
    "Weathered"
    "Stand Here With Me"
    "Hide"
    "With Arms Wide Open"
    "One"
    "What's This Life For"

    Encore:
    "Don't Stop Dancing"
    "Higher"
    "My Sacrifice"

In a story that will make car lovers everywhere cringe in regret, AP reposts a 1989 Porsche Sportster owned by Nicolas Cage (GONE IN 60 SECONDS, many unmade superhero movies) was found at the bottom of the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.

According to local police reports, 19-year-old Michael J. Grambling of Arnold, Missouri , was arrested after he supposedly stole the $100,000 car from a truck transporting it across country, went joy riding, then sank the car in Lake of the Ozarks’ 12 foot deep water.

Cage's publicist revealed the car was to be auctioned off once it reached California.

Action icon Bruckheimer to film 9-11?
Wants to show heroism of horrible day

In an interview with UPI, action film legend Jerry Bruckheimer (BLACK HAWK DOWN, TOP GUN, PEARL HARBOR) revealed he’s considering going where most in Hollywood fear for creative inspiration: the September 11th attacks.

"I love making pictures that make a difference, about people who make a difference," Bruckheimer told the wire service, adding, “I think there will be stories that will come out of [the terrorist attacks on the United States] and they will be very heroic and worthwhile telling and somebody is going to have to sit down and write it. I'm sure it will be a journalist just like Mark Bowden [the author of 'BLACK HAWK DOWN] who saw these young men being dragged through the streets back in 1993 and said, 'Boy, I bet there's a real story about that' and he went out and researched the book.”

While many who remember the critical drubbing Bruckheimer took for last year’s PEARL HARBOR might be shocked Bruckheimer is venturing into what most in town see as the third rail of tender public emotions, Bruckheimer added he has no specific plans anytime soon.
