The NFL hopes to have a plan in place by the end of the month for their 2002 realignment. The top 7 proposals are here:

Making plans for NFL realignment

Personally, I'd like to see them go totally geographical. I know some people would hate to lose some rivalries, but new ones would form in time and it's ridiculous that for years teams like Atlanta and New Orleans have been in the West while Dallas and Arizona (St. Louis when the division was formed) have been in the East. So here's my thoughts:

NFC
East
Carolina, New York Giants, Philadelphia, Washington
South
Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans, Tampa Bay
North
Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota
West
Arizona, St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle
AFC
East
Baltimore, Buffalo, New England, New York Jets
South
Houston, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Miami
North
Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh
West
Denver, Kansas City, Oakland, San Diego

Either that or flip-flop, moving Carolina to the AFC South and Tennessee to the NFC East, but I don't think that's necessary. Of course, in order to do it best, you'd need some wholesale league-swapping. What a fun division would be with Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Miami & say, Atlanta or New Orleans! But that would never happen...

NFL realignment is smart...a long time coming...but you have to keep storied rivalries intact

AFC
East
Miami, Buffalo, New England, New York Jets

North
Cleveland, Cincinatti, Pittsburgh, Baltimore

South
Jacksonville, Tennessee, Houston, Indianapolis

West
Denver, Kansas City, San Diego, Oakland

NFC
East
Washington, Dallas, Philadelphia, New York Giants

North
Green Bay, Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit

South
New Orleans, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Carolina

West
San Francisco, Arizona, Seattle, St. Louis

i have sent my idea to commissioner Tagliabue and have been assured that this is what the realigned league will look like...Baltimore Cleveland Pitt have to be in the same division because the rivalry is awesome for the NFL...Seattle is out of the AFC because well no one cares plus they started off in the NfC west when they first came into the league...all the real big divisional rivalries are still intact...and some interesting new ones can now develop Tampa Bay New Orleans, Indianapolis Jacksonville, San Francisco Seattle
good stuff

trust me this is the only good realignment move...i've watched football my whole life i know heheehe

I dig it for sure. The good thing is that they, for the most part, keep all the traditional rivalries alive. Ain't no way in hell you can't have Dallas vs Washington twice a year. Green Bay and the Chicago is another one that MUST stay intack. I do like the idea that they finally changed the divisions though. Out.

I pretty much agree with your view, Billy. Putting Baltimore in our (Cincinnati Bungles) division may preserve the "old time" feel, but the Colts make more sense. That's a short enough distance that people from Cleveland and Cincinnati could drive to games in Indy and vice versa. Fanatics from Pittsburg probably would consider that drive as well.

Baltimore fits in better with New England, Buffalo, and New York.

And Dallas, hell, they're placed in the WRONG location geographically.

Works for me.

Carolina/Washington or Dallas/N'awlins just ain't the same as Cowboys/Redskins.

I just hope they don't let everybody plus their cousin in the playoffs. Go back to division winners only.

Yeah, I agree - four teams from each league in the playoffs would be plenty. But since they currently take six (right?) they'll probably take two wild cards still.

Ya gotta feel for the Cards a little. Their only games that sparked any interest were the ones with Dallas.

I'm just glad the NFL is returning to Houston! I don't really care what division they are in, but it's a nice bonus that they ended up in the same one as Tennessee. Just wait till Bud Adams shows his butt back in Houston.

This was pretty much what I had envisioned as well. I'm glad GB,Chi,Det,and Min retain their rivalry. I don't give a fuck about Dallas, they need to kick 'em out of the league I knew Seattle would go NFC because Mike Holmgren was pushing it all along. He's a Bill Walsh, San Fran, Green Bay product and you know he wanted back in the NFC. Overall, I'm happy and my prediction came close.
