Okay, here's the scoop. The last couple of days I've downloaded a Realplayer and a winamp player (which I got rid of), so I decided I should do a C drive defragmentation. I've done them before, not that long ago and it took 2 or 3 hours to do it.

Tonight I've had the thing running for 1 and a half hours and it's done 1%. What's with that, at that rate it'll take days to finish it (I've paused it to come in here and ask about it).

Also, does the defrag get affected by the screen saver kicking in?

Before starting this, I did a virus scan of my whole system (no viruses) and a disc cleanup.

    Any hints or ideas here?

    Thanks.

Glenn, disable as many programs as you can before running defrag.

The screen saver is likely causing the hard drive to be written, and as a result, this is causing the defragger to reset, which means it may never be finished.

Disable the programs such as virus scan and your screen saver, and anything else that runs in the background, and try again.

Okay, I can shut off the virus scan.

How do you shut off the screen saver? I don't know how to do that, so I just had it set on 50 minutes so as to keep the screen saver from coming on as often. The screen saver I have is just a standard Internet Explorer one.

When I do this, should I resume the defrag, or shut it off and start all over again?

    Thanks a lot JWS.

Glenn...turn off the damn screen saver, they suck.

    Go here to do it:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display -> Screen Saver

Pull down the Screen Saver tab and select "None." That will do it.

If your monitor supports it, use power management features instead.

They're tons better than screen savers and ease the burden on your electric bill considerably.

Okay, the screen saver is off and the virus scan is off. But resuming the defrag hasn't sped it up at all. It shows 1% for about a second, then goes back to 0% for 20 seconds, and over and over. And the system barely seems to be working at all.

Should I just stop it and re-start the defrag? It's been over 2 hours and I'm on 1%. I've defraged before and it only took slightly longer than this to do the whole thing.

    Thanks guys.

Okay, Glenn - I don't remember which system you're running, but if Windows 95 or 98 try this - do a shutdown and restart. AS SOON AS YOU HEAR THE BEEP - hit F8 - this will bring up a menu screen from which you can select "Safe Mode" and trying running DEFRAG in that. With Windows 95 you can hit F8 when you see "Starting Windows 95" on the screen - 98 it's trickier - you've got to hit it at the beep. If you get the Windows 95 or 98 screen with the clouds - it's too late, you missed it, gotta try again. Good luck! (You did a SCANDISK, right?)

Well, I guess I'll try that safe mode. I just did a scan disc (everything was fine) and re-started the computer. I started the defrag again and again it ran for 50 minutes and only got 1% done.

I'm going to try the safe mode thing now. If that's slow, should I just let the damn thing run all night and see how far it gets? I don't know what else to do, because so far it's doing nothing.

Regardless, thanks for all the answers guys.

Overnight run's a good idea. If it keeps restarting, I believe Defrag will stop itself until you start it again, so we'll find out what's up then.

    Glad we could help Glenn.

Props to everybody, with a few extra for Billy007. I went into the safe mode (which I didn't even know existed before tonight ) and did the defrag in there. The whole thing took only 20 minutes.

Any idea why it wouldn't go in the normal mode but yet went so quickly in the safe mode? The defrag is the same in both modes isn't it?

Anyway, just glad to get that done.

Thanks again guys. You gotta love the Links; where else can you admit to liking VH III and still get people to lend you a hand.

Safe mode doesn't allow any other programs to run except for the critical programs needed for Windows to run. Very useful troubleshooting tool.

That's why it worked with such a degree of speed, because nothing else really loaded.

Yup, with that it can anylize and automatically checks to see if the drive needs to be defraged.

Thats the goodpoint out of few, the MAIN bad reason is I haven't been gaming because games will not run on 200NT.

I'm abouts to go back to 98', now does anybody have any suggestions on gamming with NT?
