    Def Leppard Bringing on "X"

New album will be band's first in three years

Def Leppard are putting the finishing touches on their tenth album, tentatively titled "X" and due later this year. The band recorded the follow-up to 1999's Euphoria last year in Los Angeles and Sweden, with drummer Rick Allen adding his parts last December in Dublin.
For the first time in their history, Def Leppard have enlisted multiple producers, including their past crony Pete Woodruffe, Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith), and the Swedish tandem of Andreas Carlsson and Per Aldeheim (Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync).

"It's certainly gonna be an energetic record," frontman Joe Elliott posts on the band's site. "It's gonna have ballads, it's gonna have mid-tempo songs, it's gonna have fast rockers. What we've got right now, is much more into the songwriter aspect of it, great melodies, rather than 'Wow, listen to this great riff!' So it's not necessarily gonna be a metal record. Right now, we're into just making a good rock record that appeals to more than just someone with a Metallica T-shirt on."

In other Def Leppard news, the band's 1983 smash Pyromania will be the subject of VH1's debut episode of Ultimate Albums, which premieres on Sunday night.

Aaron Lewis owes much of his recent success to the Family Values Tour 2000 album, which featured his acoustic "Outside" single, so it's fitting that the Staind singer is all over the record from the 2001 outing.

Family Values Tour 2001, due May 7, features Lewis solo again on "Black," with Staind on "Fade" and "It's Been Awhile," with Stone Temple Pilots on their classic "Creep," and with Linkin Park on "One Step Closer," according to Elektra Records.

The album, the third spawned from the Family Values tour, also features a notable collaboration between Stone Temple Pilots, who slammed rap-rock on the tour (see "Stone Temple Pilots Slam Rap Rockers At Family Values Stop"), and Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington on "Wonderful." The song, from STP's Shangri-La Dee Da (2001), is the live album's first single.

Static-X and Deadsy singer P. Exeter Blue team up on the record as well, on the former's "Push It." Static-X and Deadsy also contribute another track each, "Cold" and a cover of Rush's "Tom Sawyer," respectively.

Josh Abraham (Staind, Limp Bizkit) produced Family Values Tour 2001, which was recorded on various dates of the outing last fall.

Stone Temple Pilots, who plan on hitting the road again in April, have four songs on the album, including "Wicked Garden."

Last year's Family Values ignited a friendship between Staind and Linkin Park that resulted in Lewis collaborating with the rap-rockers for their upcoming remix album (see "Staind's Aaron Lewis Joins Linkin Park On 'Crawling' Remix").

The first two Family Values live albums have been certified platinum.

Family Values Tour 2001 track list, according to Elektra:
    Stone Temple Pilots - "Vasoline"

    Linkin Park - "Runaway"

    Staind - "Fade"

Stone Temple Pilots f/ Chester Bennington of Linkin Park - "Wonderful"

Static-X f/ P. Exeter Blue of Deadsy - "Push It"

    Staind - "It's Been Awhile"

Stone Temple Pilots - "Wicked Garden"

    Static-X - "Cold"

Aaron Lewis of Staind - "Black"

Stone Temple Pilots f/ Aaron Lewis of Staind - "Creep"

    Deadsy - "Tom Sawyer"

Linkin Park f/ Aaron Lewis of Staind- "One Step Closer"

Former FEAR FACTORY Frontman Speaks Out On Band Split - Mar. 8, 2002

Former FEAR FACTORY frontman Burton C. Bell has issued the following statement regarding his decision to leave the group—effectively causing the band's break-up after a nearly 12-year existence:

“On Saturday, March 2nd, 2002, I met with all the members of FEAR FACTORY. At that meeting, I announced my personal feelings about the present situation within the band. I have been unhappy for quite sometime both interpersonally, and business wise, and that has rendered me creatively restrained. After extensive deliberation within my self, I decided that the best possible answer I was comfortable with was to leave the band.

“This is not a whimsical advance into the unknown, it is something that I have been thinking about for quite sometime. I have kept my feelings and realizations to myself until it was evident that it was a relationship that was unproductive to me as an artist. This decision was a sudden development to most everyone to whom I am familiar with.

“We have experienced many highs, and just as many lows in the span of 12 years, and I do not regret a single moment. I have searched within me, every possible avenue of execution in making this decision and I feel that for me, and my growth as an artist, moving forward is the best possible solution. I would like to extend my wishes to the guys 'the best of luck in their future endeavors'. I will miss the relationship I had with the fans and I want to thank them for their support through all the years.

    “Burton C. Bell”

    Colin Quinn's Show Debuts Monday

    03/09/2002 1:59 AM EST

Comedy has been a little timid since the terrorist attacks, and Colin Quinn is aiming to change that.

The former "Saturday Night Live" comedian plans jokes on the war, on Islam and on racial profiling in his new comic variety show. It debuts Monday on NBC.

"I don't think people should exploit or disrespect the dead, but I think there has been too much timidity," Quinn told The Associated Press.

His show debuts on the six-month anniversary of Sept. 11. But Quinn said he senses a yearning to laugh again, and he's serving up what he describes as a modern update of "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" with topical humor.

NBC is giving him three shows to prove himself. The premiere of "The Colin Quinn" show is sandwiched between a celebrity "Fear Factor" and a salute to the late John Belushi.

"It's fun," he said. "I have no complaints yet. Notice I say 'yet.' Get back to me in a few weeks."

PHILIP ANSELMO: If DOWN Was To Take Over PANTERA, I'd Say It Was Damn Worth It - Mar. 9, 2002

During a recent interview with Britain's Kerrang! magazine, PANTERA/DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo once again commented on the possibility of DOWN “overtaking” his main band, thus causing a shift in the singer's priorities. In the issue dated March 9th, 2002 featuring Anselmo on the cover, Philip states the following:

“I don't wanna make anybody mad that I've ever played music with before because I have nothing but respect for them, but this particular DOWN record was one of the most fulfilling things I've ever done in my life, man.

“You have to admit that when I'm in PANTERA, I have to take on a f.cking role, y'know? I have to be very aggressive. And it's a part of me, but I'm not 22 anymore. I'm not in bar rooms fighting or doing any of that sh.t. DOWN is about songs and what the songs sound like. It's not about how much you can get up on stage and jump around. There ain't nobody playing this kinda sh.t right now and I'm freaking out on it unlike I've ever freaked on any other f.cking record. I can't listen to it enough without it trapping me.

“We'll take things one step at a time. But if this was to take over the other bands, f.ck, I'd say it was damn worth it.”

In other news, DOWN have added further dates to their upcoming US tour in support of the upcoming Down II CD, due on March 26th through Elektra Records. The updated itinerary now looks like this:

May 01 - New York, NY @ Irving Plaza
    May 02 - Philadelphia, PA @ Trocadero
May 03 - Worcester, MA @ The Palladium
May 05 - Cleveland, OH @ The Odeon
    May 06 - Cincinnati, OH @ Bogart's
May 07 - Columbus, OH @ Newport Music Hall
May 09 - Grand Rapids, MI @ Orbit Room
    May 10 - Detroit, MI @ Harpo's
May 11 - Chicago, IL @ House of Blues
May 13 - Minneapolis, MN Quest Club
May 15 - Denver, CO @ Ogden Theater
May 17 - Las Vegas, NV @ House of Blues
May 18 - W. Hollywood, CA @ House of Blues
May 19 - San Francisco, CA @ The Fillmore
May 21 - Scottsdale, AZ @ Cajun House
May 24 - Houston, TX @ Verizon Wireless Theater

FILTER Frontman Explains Meaning Behind Title Of Forthcoming CD - Mar. 9, 2002

FILTER frontman Richard Patrick recently elaborated on his explanation for why he selected The Amalgamut as the title of the group's forthcoming studio CD, due through Reprise Records in July. According to Patrick, “I called the record The Amalgamut because I took a trip across the country and started to realize that everything in America is somewhat different, but very similar at the same time. I realize that if you go down south, people talk with a Midwestern accent, if you go to the west, people talk like they're from the east. What I'm trying to say is America is truly becoming the land that is a melting pot, and within this melting pot there is an immense amount of diversity. We put a man on the moon a year after I was born, we are the country that you are allowed to do and say whatever the fuck you want to, as long you don't kill someone. The Amalgamut is a celebration of this freedom, there is no such thing as 'where are you from' in this country. Your ancestors could be Irish, Polish, Jewish, Native American, you can have that culture, but ultimately you're an Amalgamut. Whenever anyone asks me what my heritage is, I could say I am Native American, Irish, Spanish, German, Italian, but instead I proudly say I am a 13th generation American.

“Be an individual in this country and realize that since the Revolutionary War, The Civil War, World War I, World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and The War on Terror, thousands and thousands and thousands, maybe millions of men, have died for that freedom. This record is about going out there and being free, because the ideology of freedom isn't just in America, it's in England, it's in France, it's in Italy, it's in Germany, it's in Japan, it's in Canada, it's in Australia, and it's in many other countries. So please go out there and live your lives and remember that you're all free and that we're all Amalgamuts.”

Green Day 'Practicing Every F*&@ing Day' On New Album
    March 8, 2002, 11:50 am PT

    Green Day
Green Day drummer Tre Cool checked in with fans via the band's official Web site (www.greenday.com) on Thursday (March 7), giving them a vague update on the progress of the band's upcoming new album.

"This is what's f*&@ing going f*&@ing on," says Tre Cool. "We're practicing every f*&@ing day and we sound pretty good I might add. We officially put up the list of songs for the new record now on the wall of our jam space -- sort of a tradition. We put a list up there and we add songs when we get them writ. So we've got some songs writ and got them practiced kick tight. That's about it."

As for a release date, the drummer reports the album will be in stores "sometime not so soon." Calls to Warner Bros. Records for a more specific answer were not returned by press time.

Meanwhile, as Green Day churns out new songs for the follow-up to 2000's Warning, the band is also rehearsing for its upcoming tour of Japan (kicking off March 29 in Sapporo) and its Pop Disaster tour with Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World, and Saves the Day (allstar, Feb. 14) (commencing on April 17 in Bakersfield, Calif.).

James Cameron Involved with Alien 5?
    Sunday, March 10, 2002 2:54 CST

'Hicks' from The Alien Experience sent this interesting news about "Alien 5" from the latest issue of Total Film magazine out of the UK...

Sigourney Weaver really, really wants Alien 5 to happen. Total Film learned that the 52-year-old star of the megabucks sci-fi series approached Ridley Scott last year with an eye to "do another one". And Scott has let one "earth-shattering" (his words) piece of news escape: "Well, James Cameron is involved in it now."

What role Cameron will actually take in the new adventures of Ellen Ripley is undetermined (will he write, produce...direct!?), but Big Jim is definitely interested and the prospect of the Aliens director collaberating with origional helmer Scott will make fans drool as much as the alien creatures themselves. It seems the Titanic director was also approached by Weaver, who is either desperate to revisit the character of Ripley in order to fulfill her artistic needs...or fancies pocketing an expected $20 million for another outing.

As for Scott's involvment, the dour Geordie is still weighing his options. After nabbing an Oscar-nom for Black Hawk Down he's Mr. Popular, and both pirate swashbuckler Captain Kidd and historical epic Alexander The Great are battling for his attention. Be he is giving Alien 5 serious consideration, possibly in a story that visits the home planet of the grisly monstoids from his 1979 masterpiece. The less-favored option is to continue from where Alien: Resurrection left off (Aliens reaching Earth).

Whatever happens, if Ripley does return Weaver has insisted it will be her final installment. To which we proffer one reasoned response: chinny reckon.

I know Scott has been confirmed for Tripoli, but this is still definitley interesting.
".....and Harry Potter and all of his wizard-friends went to Hell for practicing Witchcraft. The End." -Ned Flander's version of reading "Harry Potter" to Rod and Todd.
