NEWS - Wall Of Voodoo Founding Guitarist Dies
    03/15/2002

(3/15/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- Wall Of Voodoo founder and songwriter-guitarist Marc Moreland died of kidney failure on Wednesday (March 13), in Paris, at the age of 44.

Moreland formed Wall Of Voodoo with vocalist Stan Ridgway in 1978, and the band went on to release the 1983 hit "Mexican Radio" from the album Call Of The West. Prior to that, Moreland was part of the Los Angeles punk movement with his band the Skulls.

Wall Of Voodoo released six albums for IRS Records. After that band broke up, Moreland released solo material and briefly worked with Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano.

POWERMAN 5000: Possible New Song Titles, Descriptions Revealed - Mar. 16, 2002

The following are rumored to be the song titles and descriptions for several tracks that have been penned for POWERMAN 5000's as-yet-untitled forthcoming studio CD, tentatively due to be released through Dreamworks Records in late 2002 (as posted by an “anonymous” source on the band's official message board at www.powerman5000.com):

    01. Panic
Starts off with MINISTRY-like guitars, before crescending into a full sonic assault

    02. Mechanical Failure
Very industrial. Think robotic vocals and berserk rhythms.

    03. Ethereal
Ethnic and Gothic, with a variety of unique instruments

    04. On The Run
Very Catchy, sort of like "Supernova" with a small horn section (No, this is NOT ska, this is chaotic!)

    05. HeadTrip
The title speaks for itself, plenty of samples and sound effects, expect the unexpected

    06. Immune
Sludge-Metal, this is the POWERMAN 5000 you have known to love over the years.

    07. Confession
Acoustic(!), shows the emotional side of PM5K (and they have feelings too, TRUST me!)

As you may recall, POWERMAN 5000 were all set to release the follow-up to the platinum Tonight The Stars Revolt! On August 28th, 2001 when it was decided two weeks prior to the album's intended release that the whole project should be scrapped and the band should be sent back to the drawing board. The official explanation was that the move was a voluntary action designed to give the fans “the greatest album possible”, but the less-than-stellar reception to the album's original first single, "Bombshell", and the lukewarm reviews given to the advance copies of the full-length CD (titled Anyone For Doomsday?) indicated otherwise.

Although it is not presently clear if any of the tracks from the “scrapped” version of the group's forthcoming CD will make it onto the final product, it is rumored that "Bombshell", "Danger is Go", and "Megatronic" will resurface on the new CD, possibly in re-recorded form.

    Bon Jovi Prepare to "Bounce"

Band begins work on follow-up to "Crush"

After taking five years between These Days and 2000's Crush, Bon Jovi are back in a New Jersey studio at work on Bounce, the follow-up to their Grammy-nominated comeback album.
The band has written twenty-six songs and finished thirteen demos and in a recent online chat described the upcoming record as having an "upbeat kinda vibe." Luke Ebbin, who worked on with the band on Crush, will co-produce with singer Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora. The album is scheduled for a fall release.

A Box Set is also in the works for the band. Currently scheduled for release next year, the set will coincide with Bon Jovi's twentieth anniversary.

    A 'Rings' Toss

The dish on ''LOTR: The Two Towers'' -- Splashy Oscar-season plans include the first trailer for the sequel and two ''Fellowship'' DVDs by Gillian Flynn

ARMED AND READY Ring leader Mortensen's role expands in ''Two Towers''

These days, even cave-dwelling trolls can't escape the hoard of the ''Rings.'' Heading into this year's Oscars with the most nominations of any film, Peter Jackson's ''The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring'' continues its media assault on multiple fronts -- from Academy voters to average filmgoers (who have plunked down $710 million worldwide so far).

While its 13 nods put it in the company of Oscar sweepers like ''Shakespeare in Love'' and ''Forrest Gump,'' there's no sure thing in Middle-earth. ''Fellowship'''s massive box office and otherworldly theme could plunk it among popcorn flicks like ''E.T.'' and ''Star Wars'' -- Oscar's classic underachievers. The good news: ''People don't think of 'The Lord of the Rings' pejoratively as a fantasy,'' says ''Inside Oscar 2'' author Damien Bona, noting that four of the last six Best Picture winners were epics.

Speaking of epic ambitions, New Line is extending its ''Rings'' campaign with plans for not one but two DVD packages for ''Fellowship.'' According to Jackson, the theatrical version hits stores in August; fall brings a multidisc director's cut with 30 more minutes and new music from composer Howard Shore. Extra scenes include rockin' Hobbit tunes (if you can rock on the lute), back story on mangy mystery man Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), and an extended gift-giving scene of Cate Blanchett's Elf Queen. ''In the movie, Galadriel is this frightening oracle,'' Jackson says. ''This is her in a more gentle mode.''

On March 29, New Line will tempt fans to see ''Fellowship'' one more time on the big screen. The lure: a three-and-a-half-minute, Jackson-edited trailer for December's ''The Two Towers'' at the film's end. ''I went through finished F/X shots and plucked the ones that looked really good,'' Jackson says.

While Jackson and Co. are mum on specifics, here are some details EW gleaned about ''Towers'' -- which will boast about 600 F/X shots (about 80 more than ''Fellowship''. Warning: This may get kinda geeky.

BURDENED BEASTIE One fave ''Towers'' creation is Gollum, former owner and current coveter of the One Ring, who is forced to march Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) to Mount Doom. But Gollum's anti-Hobbit plotting makes him a menace à trois. ''It's an unholy trinity,'' Jackson says. ''We play psychological games more intensely than the book does.'' In addition to providing the sticky rasp of the computer-animated Gollum, actor Andy Serkis played his scenes with Wood and Astin while wearing a black Lycra jumpsuit covered with hundreds of pinhead sensors. Serkis' movements were then replicated to become the CGI Gollum. ''Andy's physicality is a big part of what Gollum will look like on screen,'' says exec producer Mark Ordesky.

CREATURE COMFORTS Quel scandale! Shelob, the she-spider that battles Sam at the end of J.R.R. Tolkien's ''The Two Towers,'' has been booted to the third movie. ''If we started 'Return of the King' after Shelob -- the way the books do -- there'd be very little for Frodo and Sam to do,'' says Jackson. Right now, good guy Treebeard, the oldest being in Middle-earth, is getting the final CGI touches on his bark and leaves, with a voice by John Rhys-Davies (who also plays dwarf Gimli). And look for Brad Dourif as creepy Grima Wormtongue, double agent of Saruman (Christopher Lee). ''[Brad] doesn't play him as a groveling creature,'' Lee says. ''He kind of slithers along beside me with a soft, husky voice, whispering.''

FIGHTING SPIRITS Jackson has between 15 and 20 hours of footage of the key battle of Helm's Deep, in which an army of elves and humans spar with 10,000 Uruk-hai (those Über-Orcs Saruman created). ''Helm's Deep is one of Tolkien's most vivid pieces of prose,'' Jackson says. ''You really feel his blood boiling.'' What does an army of crazed Uruk-hai sound like? A stadium of Kiwi cricket fans, turns out. In February, Jackson made a half-time appearance at a New Zealand-England match and asked the crowd to beat their chests, march in place, and even perform a tricky bit of dialect work. ''There's this Black Speech battle cry the Uruk do,'' Ordesky says. ''We wrote it out phonetically on the Diamond Vision screen and Peter directed 25,000 people going 'Rrwaaa harra farr rrara!''' Which just might translate to ''Oscar, please.''

Ex-GUNS N' ROSES Drummer STEVEN ADLER: I'm Pissed At AXL ROSE - Mar. 17, 2002

Former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler recently commented publicly on the December 29th incident in Las Vegas that saw ex-GNR axeman Slash being turned away from a GUNS N' ROSES gig by security personnel who didn't want to enrage frontman Axl Rose by letting the guitarist into the venue. Stated Adler: “That's so f.cking sad that he (Axl) has to be that insecure. That he can't even let a partner in life [into the venue to see him perform], 'cause it's not just a band, there's millions of rock and roll bands, but GUNS N' ROSES was the people's f.ckin' band. What they did to me as a personal member was bad enough, but that's so wrong not to let [Slash] in, let him onstage. Not even let him play!

“I'm pissed that [Axl] didn't give me a call! I sent him a letter. I'd love to talk to him. It's only been 12 years. I have nothing against him, whatever he said, whatever happened in the past, happened, it's old. It was just f.ckin' news, it's f.ckin' over. We were young. We know how to rock, obviously. You don't need all these issues. But, I have to say, Axl was the greatest frontman ever, period.”

Am Legend on Warner Bros.' Fast Track
    Monday, March 18, 2002 12:19 CST

The post-apocalyptic drama "I Am Legend" has re-emerged on a fast track at Warner Bros., reports Variety. Arnold Schwarzenegger has become the film's producer, and WB and Schwarzenegger are commencing negotiations with Will Smith to star and Michael Bay ("Pearl Harbor") to direct.

Schwarzenegger had long been attached to star in "Legend," which once had Ridley Scott set to direct. Scripted by Mark Protosevich, the film is an adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel that takes place in L.A. after a biological war and pits the last man on Earth against the populace of nocturnal mutants bent on rendering him extinct.

The project halted in late 1997 because of WB concerns over a budget that hovered around $125 million, which seemed like a lot of money back then. An attempt was made to redraft the drama to be a bit less pricey, and it attracted Bay and Smith.

    Pantoliano Joins Daredevil Adaptation
    Sunday, March 17, 2002 11:44 CST

According to IGN Filmforce, "The Matrix" and "Memento" star Joe Pantoliano will play Manhattan investigative reporter Ben Urich in the "Daredevil" movie adaptation at 20th Century Fox.

Urich worked for The Daily Bugle in both issues of Daredevil and Spider-Man, though the character won't be appearing in the movie adaptation of the latter.

The site says that in "Daredevil," the wiry, chain-smoking, dogged reporter's mission is to uncover who the mysterious "Kingpin of Crime" is, a quest that brings Urich into touch with the masked vigilante Daredevil.

    Spielberg on E.T. 2
    Unlikely is an understatement

“I thought about doing a sequel in the intoxication of the success of E.T.” Those are the semi-familiar words of Steven Spielberg on the 20th anniversary of the smashingly successful release of his famous boy meets alien story.

In interviews carried on NBC Saturday night on an anniversary E.T. program, which looks at Friday’s special edition re-release, Spielberg revisited the idea of crafting a follow-up to his most personal blockbuster to date. So what’s the word?

    Don’t count on it.

“I realized it’s a very perfect story,” Spielberg said. “It ended exactly where it should have ended. There is no postscript to it. If people are hungry for a sequel, they should go see this 20th anniversary re-release, because there ain’t gonna be one.”

Gibson begs off MAD MAX 4
It’s not official, but it doesn’t look good

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Monday, March 18, 2002

    By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
    By: News Editor
    Source: Us Magazine

In the latest issue of US magazine, the once and probably not future MAD MAX, Mel Gibson drops another not so subtle hint that he will not be returning to the series despite the efforts of series director George Miller.

“I don’t know if my joints would be up to it,” Gibson said. This is the most recent in a string of less-than-outright-no’s Gibson has offered on the subject. Given the last MAX film came out almost 20 years ago, and the TV version went nowhere a few years back… kids, it’s time to lay this one to rest. It hurts to say, and I’m sure hurts to read, but this looks less likely with every Gibson interview.

Contemporary metal act Static-X will be the subject of an upcoming sci-fi action adventure comic book. Due July 24 from Chaos! Comics, "Static-X #1" will find the band's members -- Wayne Static, Ken Jay, Tony Campos, and Tripp Eisen -- recast as cybernetically enhanced enslaved workers for the State, which rules the world.

The comic book will come packaged with an exclusive CD. The enhanced disc will feature "Black & White," recorded live during the band's stint on last year's Family Values tour, a live music video of "Get to the Gone," and interview footage of the band.

Chaos! publisher Brian Pulido wrote the story for "Static-X #1," which will be illustrated by artist David Brewer ("Incredible Hulk," "Evil Ernie") and colorist Jay Fotos ("Spawn"). The edition will be released with three separate covers -- a photo cover, an art cover, and a collector's edition cover with the bands autographs superimposed in foil lettering.

Static-X was heavily involved with the development of the story, according to a Chaos! spokesperson. The band, which had 100% approval of all aspects of the project, visited the company's offices in Scottsdale, Ariz., to discuss the plot and how the members were to be depicted in the comic book. Pictures of the band's visit to the offices are on the Chaos! Web site.

Closer to the release date fans will be able to pre-order the comic book directly from the company's site. Chaos! Comics also encourages using the Comic Shop Locator Service (1-888-COMIC BOOK or csls.diamondcomics.com ) to identify local retailers who will carry the issue.

This is not the first time Chaos! has worked with a band to produce a comic book. In 1997, the company introduced "The Cryptic Writings of Megadeth" series, which interpreted the band's songs into comic book form. Chaos! also publishes a series of Insane Clown Posse comics (each of which come with an exclusive CD single), and has also marketed action figures of the group. The spokesperson says that the company is currently negotiating with other artists for future projects.

Static-X recently wrapped a weeklong Mexican tour supporting Korn. According to its official Web site, the band is planning a set of radio station-sponsored festival appearances in the coming months, and is in the midst of formulating international and summer tour plans. The only currently confirmed date on its itinerary is a March 30 appearance at La Luna in Riverside, Calif.

As previously reported, Static-X has contributed songs to the soundtracks of "Queen of the Damned" and "Resident Evil," and recently recorded "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" for the upcoming Rob Zombie-produced Ramones tribute album. Two of the band's tracks -- "Cold" and "Push It" -- will appear on Elektra's "Family Values Tour 2001" album due out in May.

The band's latest Warner Bros. album, last year's "Machine," debuted at No. 11 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 328,000 copies in the U.S. to date, according to SoundScan.
