Willie Stargell died at age 61 today from a stroke. He was a favorite of Pittsburghers for years. He was in poor health for quite a while, and it finally caught up with him. I was lucky enough to see him play when I was little, even though I wasn't around to see Clemente.

Damn, Abe - you scared me there for a sec, too.

Willie Stargell was a great ballplayer. My grandpa used to go to the Pirates' spring training every year in Bradenton, Fla before he passed away. Used to hang with Willie and Chuck Tanner and Dave Parker and the likes. Sent me a ball signed by that whole 1979 team one year along with a personal note on a spring training program from Tanner. R.I.P. , Willie - the game misses players like you.

I think I heard correctly on Baseball Tonight; he actually did it twice. Wow.

Pops will be missed. He was only 61. What a rip off.

And on the day they open the new park in Pittsburgh, too. It reminded me of when Charles Schultz died the day the last Peanuts strip came out...

    Sad day indeed!

I heard there is a big Bronze statue of him outside of the new stadium? I remeber watching him play in the world series as a kid, his upper body was HUGE.

My first thought was Grandpa Munster died.

Then I thought about Vince MacMahon.

    Then Sammy Hagar.

That's one of the drags of getting older - people that were around when you were younger suddenly go away. Willie was worth all the gold stars he gave out!
