Ric Ocasek plans to take a couple months off from producing to begin work on a Cars documentary. He will edit the documentary himself and then shop it around, with hopes of getting it released as soon as the end of this year.
"There's a lot of videos that sometimes we did on our own, that we didn't release as videos," says Ocasek, the Cars' former frontman. "I have a ton of backstage footage and a ton of stuff from all the years we were a band. There's a lot of live stuff and a ton of general fooling around, which I think might be pretty interesting. There's quite a lot of stuff that would be pretty fun for people to see what the band was really like."

Formed in 1976 in Boston, the Cars helped to define the New Wave sound through their keyboard-driven hits like "Just What I Needed," "Let's Go" and "You Might Think," before they split in 1988. The members have remained in touch, but any possibility of a true reunion ended in 2000 with the death of bassist/co-lead vocalist Ben Orr.

Ocasek is also ready to begin work on his fifth solo album and first since 1997's Troublizing, which was produced by Billy Corgan and featured former Smashing Pumpkins/Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur and former Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes. However, on the new album, Ocasek plans to go it alone. "I just want this particular record to be different than any of the others I've done," he says. "I intend to do it all in my own studio, in a much more homey way."

But, not surprising for a man whose recent production credits include Weezer and No Doubt, Ocasek is also shooting for a pop-friendly album. "I've just generally been thinking about having songs that people can really attach themselves to really quickly," he says. "I don't know if I would do any poetry on music. I think it would be something you can sing, hum along to, every song. Maybe a different approach in the arrangements, nothing too traditional."

In other Cars news, the twenty-track Complete Greatest Hits will be released February 19th on Rhino Records.

Schwarzenegger Both Good & Bad in T3!
    Friday, January 25, 2002 10:54 CST

Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed an interesting bit about the plot of "Terminator 3" on Access Hollywood tonight.

Besides there already being a female Terminator, he said that his Terminator will be glitched. It will switch sides throughout the film, sometimes controlled by the machines and sometimes controlled by the humans.

Austin Powers 3 Loses Goldmember Title
    Friday, January 25, 2002 11:13 CST

Been wondering where the "Austin Powers 3" posters and teaser trailer have disappeared to? E! Online reports that MGM has obtained a cease-and-desist order against New Line Cinema that prohibits New Line from calling the latest installment of Mike Myers' spy series "Austin Powers in Goldmember".

Apparently, the 007 folks weren't too happy on the double entendre of "Goldmember"--a takeoff on the 1964 Bond classic, "Goldfinger"--and released the legal hounds to force the name change.

"MGM/UA and Danjaq have a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone who tries to trade in on the James Bond franchise without authorization," says an MGM spokesperson.

Over the past 24 hours, New Line has begun frantically recalling all promotional materials--posters, trailers, photos and anything else that bears the name Goldmember--from movie theaters, TV stations, Websites and other media outlets.

"We are currently in the arbitration process and trying to resolve this matter under the MPAA guidelines," the studio says in a statement. "Until that time, we will be referring to the film as the third installment of Austin Powers."

The film will need some tweaking now, as Mike Myers was of course supposed to play the new character as well, titled Goldmember. What they'll do instead is anyone's guess.

    Arnold Talks T3 & Conan 3
    Saturday, January 26, 2002 11:07 CST

On top of the news yesterday, in which more was revealed about "T3", the Latino Review attended an interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger about his upcoming "Collateral Damage". He talked a bit more about "Terminator 3" and "Conan 3" as well.

Schwarzenegger mentioned that Linda Hamilton will be appearing in the third installment but "as flash backs...Let's just assume that she died already and he (John Connor) is on his own rather than his mother whining way (Laughing) They felt like you know John Connor is 22-23 years old his mother died and his is alone and lets move on."

He went on to say that they haven't made any decisions on who will play John Conner and that they will "start looking at pictures real soon."

Arnold also talked a bit about the "King Conan: Crown of Iron" film in development, written by John Milius. He says that John "is re-writing it as we speak. He had written it and it was a 168-page script. But the Wachowski brothers told him that it would take too much time to make it. It would be like a 3 1/2 hour movie. So they are cutting it down to a 120-page script. But its going to take time."

    Lillard teases secrets of SCOOBY-DOO
    Shaggy speaks

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Monday, January 28, 2002

    By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
    By: News Editor
    Source: Entertainment Weekly

Matthew Lillard, who plays Shaggy in the upcoming SCOOBY-DOO movie, is beginning to take up his role in doing PR for the film.

While talking in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY’s movie preview issue, Lillard teases, “We address all of those little suspicions you have about the group. Is Velma gay? Why does Fred wear that ascot? And there’s a scene where you hear reggae, you see smoke coming out of the Mystery Machine, and you see a sign that reads, ‘Pot: $5.00’ And you pan across and there’s a clay pot there.”

Lillard reveals the film will play a lot wit fan expectations. “It’s THE BRADY BUNCH meets GHOSTBUSTERS.”

    Jason X Screening
    Sunday, January 27, 2002 8:57 CST

'Clint' send us an early look at the upcoming New Line sequel, Jason X, and has some bad news for fans of the genre. The review does include spoilers, so proceed with caution:

Exploded with Dynamite, Electrocuted, Drowned, Ripped apart, Beheaded, Shot-Up by a firing squad...enough to kill anyone a million times over. But for Friday the 13th villain Jason Voohees it's merely a case of pins and needles. Now in his 10th jaunt, the hockey-masked super slasher has a new playground to slice and dice in, Space. And here, no one can hear you scream.

Forgetting that Jason Goes to Hell ever happened, the folks at New Line have Vorhees, complete with every limb, silently waiting to be poked and probed at the Crystal Lake research centre. Naturally, our avenger sets himself free, cuts up anyone in his way and gets himself cryogenically frozen in a chamber. At the same causing scientist, Rowan (Lexa Doig) to enter such frozen state too.

Cut to 2455 A.D. Some 540 years later. A spaceship’s crew stumbles upon the frozen duo and brings them aboard their craft. They resurrect Rowan, but leave the grisly looking Jason Voorhes in the state he was bought in. Naturally, Jason's not going to have a piece of this and thaws himself back into a state of indubitable psychosis. Before we know it, this craft has a madman aboard slicing and dicing any youngster – especially the promiscuous ones – who get in his way.

Jim Isaac's Jason X, while being one of the most inventive of the last 9 sequels in the series, is still a pretty average movie. The cast are obviously extras from Baywatch, except perhaps for Kane Hodder, as Jason, who still strikes a chilling figure in a dark corridor. Perhaps the long-awaited Freddy vs. Jason, might do his shapely presence more justice.

Fans will exult a couple of new elements here. The special effects look quite good; spaceships, space stations, the atmosphere... all crafted well. The new supped-up looking Jason, we are introduced to near the film's finale, although looking like a more toned Spawn – is quite a hoot too. But best of all, is a virtual reality sequence where Jason is presented with a V.R stage of Camp Crystal Lake, used by the prey to deter the killing machine from their tails. It's also nice to see a female character, android Kay-Em 14 (Lisa Ryder), able to hold her own against the menacing Jason.

If the majority of Jason X had been as fresh as it's few surprises, we could have had a conqueror here. Unfortunately, it will probably get passed off as little more than 'just another' chapter in the Friday the 13th series. It's main determinates are the somewhat insupportable dialogue – as cheesy as ever -, the token sex scenes we are all so tired of by now, and the lack of insight into the mind and motives of the man that is Jason Voohees.

For a series that was ripped directly from John Carpenter's Halloween, Friday the 13th, has had a good run. But with Jason X, looks like this loco has finally run out of steam.

    2.5 stars out of 5

ANTHRAX's Ian: New CD Will Be Full Of "Giant Fat Guitar Riffs" - Jan. 27, 2002

ANTHRAX have tracked 15 songs—including three covers—during the recording sessions for their as-yet-untitled forthcoming CD, according to a tour diary submitted by guitarist Scott Ian at www.metal-sludge.com. Describing the record as “brutal”, Ian goes on to say that the upcoming CD, which apparently no longer carries a working title of Taking The Music Back, will contain “giant fat guitar riffs of the like that haven't been heard in many a year.” Scheduled to be completed by the “end of March, beginning of April”, ANTHRAX's ninth studio album may contain another guest appearance from PANTERA axeman Dimebag Darrell, who had contributed his services to the group's last two studio CDs. Says Ian: "We played Dallas [several nights ago]. Great show. Best Dallas show since we played with PANTERA in '97. Dime hung out after. It was good to see him. He's a great friend. Will he play on three records in a row? I think so." Tentatively set for a June 24th European release through Nuclear Blast Records, the upcoming CD is being produced by Scrap 60 Productions (i.e. ANTHRAX guitarist Rob Caggiano, Eddie Wohl, and Steve Regina) and will feature the following cuts, among others:

    01. Black Dahlia
    02. Refuse To Be Denied
    03. Superhero
    04. Safe Home
    05. What Doesn't Die
    06. Strap On My Old School
    07. Taking The Music Back
    08. Nobody Knows Anything
    09. Expiration
    10. Think About An End

    B-sides/Bonus Tracks:
    01. Exit (U2 cover)
    02. Next To You (THE POLICE cover)
    03. We're A Happy Family (THE RAMONES cover)

Despite the name of his next single, the road ahead for Kid Rock will be anything but lonely.

Three days before his new single, "The Lonely Road of Faith," is shipped to radio outlets, Rock, accompanied by his Twisted Brown Trucker Band, will keep company with a sold-out Wendler Arena crowd in Saginaw, Michigan, leading the capacity house through what will undoubtedly be an old-time jamboree of anthems such as "American Bad Ass" and "I Am the Bullgod."

That show, which takes place February 22, begins the 31-date first leg of Rock's North American tour, which includes confirmed stops through a May 4 gig at Atlanta's Music Midtown festival, according to an Atlantic Records spokesperson.

Additional dates to the present trek are expected shortly, as are details on a summer tour.

"The Lonely Road of Faith" follows "Forever," the debut single from Rock's latest album, Cocky. Since its release in November, the LP has sold over 1 million copies, according to SoundScan.

Confirmed dates for Kid Rock's North American tour, according to Atlantic Records:

    2/22 - Saginaw, MI @ Wendler Arena
