Woman Who Got Leg in Mail Sues for Anguish
Wed Jan 29, 8:50 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to

HOUSTON (Reuters) - An Alaska woman, shocked to receive part of her dead father's leg in the mail instead of the gourmet "LobsterGram" she was hoping for has filed suit against the Houston firm that sent it, alleging mental anguish, people involved in the case said on Tuesday.

LaMara Lane wants $1 million for breach of contract and the mental anguish that beset her after opening what she thought was a food gift delivered to her home in the Alaskan town of North Pole, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court.

But Identigene Inc., which does DNA testing, said it was only following orders from a North Dakota judge when it shipped the leg to Lane late last year.

"We have a court order that says send it to this place and this woman," Identigene President Caroline Caskey told Reuters. "I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone."

The odd saga began in early 2000 when George Semmens died in North Dakota. He left his $200,000 estate to Lane, who was his only child, but whose mother he never married.

A sister of Semmens challenged whether Lane really was his daughter, which resulted in a North Dakota judge ordering that his body be exhumed for DNA testing.

A leg bone and samples of Semmens' body tissue were sent to Identigene, where tests confirmed that Lane was his daughter.

Tony Buzbee, a lawyer for Lane, a 41-year-old teacher's aide married to a hunter and trapper, told reporters the leg was supposed to be cremated, but was sent to her by mistake.

It arrived in a container designed to keep the contents cold, which led Lane to believe she had been sent a LobsterGram, a popular gift in the frozen north, said Buzbee.

Buzbee, who did not return phone calls on Tuesday, told the Houston Chronicle that Lane was so shocked "she's had to store the bone and flesh in her neighbor's freezer."

"She can barely talk about it without crying," he said.

Caskey said Identigene had hired a lawyer to contest the lawsuit.

Girl Brings Crack for Show-and-Tell

CORALVILLE, IA-January 28, 2003 — Another case of a kid getting a parent in trouble, for bringing something in to school that wasn't exactly intended for show-and-tell.
In Iowa, a man is facing charges – after his ten-year-old daughter brought a rock of crack cocaine to school.

Police were called in after the girl showed a plastic bag containing the crack to the school's principal.

They say the girl told them she brought the rock from home, and that it belonged to her dad.

Police searched the home – and they say they found thousands of dollars in counterfeit bills – along with some empty plastic bags, a scale, and some white rocks that could be cocaine.

Court records show the girl's father has been arrested five times for drug violations.

Wife allegedly tried to hide killing
Bleach, paint found in couple's bedroom, court documents say
By LISA TEACHEY
Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle
Jan. 28, 2003, 2:45PM

Susan Lucille Wright, charged with murder in the stabbing death of her husband, appears in state district court Monday.
After tying her husband to their bed, stabbing him almost 200 times and burying him in a backyard hole he had dug, Susan Lucille Wright tried to hide her handiwork by painting and bleaching the bedroom, court documents charge.

Her lawyer said Monday that Wright was defending herself and her children after years of abuse.

A prosecutor said that claim won't hold up.

"Where I come from, there's another answer for (abuse), and that's divorce," said Kelly Siegler, an assistant Harris County district attorney.

Wright, 26, is charged with murdering Jeffrey Andrew Wright on Jan. 13 in their home in the 10800 block of Berry Tree, in northwest Harris County.

His body was dug up Jan. 18 from a shallow hole in the family's back yard. Investigators said he had unwittingly dug his own temporary grave under a covered patio area, where he planned to install a fountain.

Monday, state District Judge Jim Wallace set Susan Wright's bail at $30,000, the standard for a murder charge in Harris County. Defense attorney Neal Davis had requested a $10,000 bond, but Siegler noted that Wright had been able to afford several days of care in a mental health facility before surrendering to authorities last week.

The judge also ordered Wright to allow investigators to collect saliva swabs to compare her DNA to evidence found at the crime scene.

Wright is accused of tying her husband to the bed by the wrists and feet and then stabbing him 193 times. Investigators said he had wounds all over his body, including to his face, eyes and neck, and seven wounds to the groin.

Some type of cord that had bound him to the bed was still around his wrists and one foot when the body was recovered, authorities said. They did not describe the cord in detail.

Authorities said Susan Wright had not reported any abuse until she called a deputy constable Jan. 14, the day after her husband's death.

She alerted a lawyer to the death Jan. 18 but spent several days in an undisclosed mental health facility before surrendering to authorities Friday.

Davis, her lawyer, said the evidence will show that Wright killed her husband in self-defense. He did not elaborate, saying only that she was physically and emotionally abused during the four-year marriage.

"A civil way out was not viable here," Davis said. "We believe we can show she was defending her life and her children."

The couple has a 4-year-old son and an 18-month-old daughter.

According to court documents, investigators found signs that Wright had gone to great lengths to cover up the evidence of her husband's slaying. They said they found paint, paint rollers and freshly painted areas in the bedroom where they believe Jeffrey Wright was killed.

The carpet had been cut out and some areas of the room had been bleached, investigators said. They added that the couple's bed had been dismantled and dumped in the back yard.

The documents also state Wright's mother, Sue Wyche, told investigators in a written statement that her daughter "told her that she killed the complainant on Monday, January 13, 2003, and she `did it with a knife,' and `he was in the hole he dug.' "

According to the court papers, Wright told her mother: "Momma, it wasn't me, I snapped. I was up there and I saw somebody do it, but it wasn't me."

Davis said Wright and her son had suffered abuse from her husband. His relatives dispute that claim.

"Whether she's a battered wife remains to be seen," Siegler said after Monday's court hearing.

Devil-Worshipping METALLICA Fans Steal Skeletons For Thanksgiving Bash - Jan. 29, 2003

The following article appeared in today's edition of the New York Post:

Three Long Island teens removed decades-old remains from three cemetery crypts and dressed them up for a party - even putting a Darth Vader mask on one corpse, sources told The Post.

Michael Herz, 18, and Michael Sossi, 17, are accused of twice breaking into 250-year-old Cedar Grove Cemetery in Patchogue sometime around Thanksgiving. A third teen, Patrick O'Rourke, 19, is accused of involvement in the second break-in.

After the trio obtained an ossified body and two skulls, they allegedly brought them to a ghoulish Thanksgiving-weekend party at the home of a friend, Jessica Wess, 17, whose parents were in Manhattan seeing a play.

Police said Herz referred to the remains by the names on their crypts - "Elmer" was Elmer E. Grandin, who died in 1933, and "Eva" and "Jason" were Eva Adams Grandin, who died in 1928, and Jason Melvin Adams, who died in 1896.

The body of Elmer Grandin - an actor who appeared on Broadway and in some silent movies - was the only complete corpse involved, said Suffolk Detective Brian McMenemy.

"Herz dressed up the full body with glasses, and then they put a Darth Vader mask on him," McMenemy said.

Wess' mother said the girl was shocked that Herz and his friends brought the corpses to her house.

"My daughter freaked out, screaming at him to get them out of there," said Rose Wess.

The kids at the party are known as "Goths" - they dress in black, and some have body piercings and tattoos.

Wess' parents don't believe any Satanic rituals were involved.

"They are not into doing any kind of ritual thing," said Rose Wess. "It was more like a stupid prank. I know it sounds sick."

After the party, Herz dumped the bodies in a drainage ditch, cops said.

But in the following days, the youths couldn't help gloating ghoulishly about the party and how they had "disassembled" the skeletons, authorities said.

A classmate said that at one point, Herz "had one skeleton under his bed and one in the trunk of his car."

Teachers heard Herz's boasts.

"He was bragging about how he broke into crypts and stole bodies," McMenemy said. "The teachers asked him, 'Don't you realize this is wrong? This is a crime?' He didn't care."

The teachers didn't believe the story, so they checked with the cemetery - which confirmed that the graves had been vandalized.

The teachers then called cops.

Herz and Sossi were arrested Dec. 1, and in the following days, cooperated with police.

"On a rainy Friday the 13th, with a full moon, Herz showed us the drainage ditch where he dumped the corpses," said McMenemy. "You can't make this up."

The cemetery respectfully reinterred the bodies.

Nobody has been able to locate any relatives of those whose bodies had been dug up.

"These people were buried so far back in time, I don't know if they have any descendants living around here," said Fred Swezey, superintendent of the 15-acre cemetery.

Herz and Sossi were charged with cemetery desecration, opening graves and body stealing - all felonies. They pleaded not guilty. O'Rourke faces one count of receiving a stolen body.

The suspects are free on bail.

Herz's lawyer, William Keahon, described his client as "a very nice young man," and insisted he "took no part in the incident that is alleged. He has no knowledge of this incident whatsoever."

Sossi's attorney, Dan Dolewski, did not return calls for comment. A female neighbor said the teen "made a lot of noise. He's not a very nice kid."

A classmate described Herz and Sossi as "scary," and said the two "listen to METALLICA, dress in black and look like they worship the devil."

Rose and John Wess said it was weeks before their daughter discussed what happened at the party.

"It's just appalling," Rose Wess said. But, she added, "They are basically good kids."

I guess they figured that describing the cord in detail might be too graphic.

Man held over 100 human skulls
From correspondents in Calcutta
January 30, 2003

A MAN who was carrying 100 human skulls in a bag has been arrested in the east Indian city of Siliguri.

Police said he claimed the remains were to be used by Buddhist monks in religious ceremonies.

Police superintendent Rajiv Mishra said Sangha Lama, 25, had collected the skulls from burning pyres in the city of Gaya in the neighbouring state of Bihar.

He was carrying them in bags to Sikkim, a remote hill state famous for its Buddhist monasteries, police said.

Lama was arrested while waiting for a bus to Sikkim.
